1:500 USAF EC-137D - W900 id 12488
I would like to share some info for the Netmodels AWACS id 12488
At first I felt this model was one of those gold plated/chrome plated versions NM are famous for ( and for which I do not care much) but a closer look made me buy this unique model. The DB indicates an E-3B from the 552nd Wing, but the model depicts 71-1407 as it rolled out in 1972 as the first AWACS prototype. It was called EC-137D back then and the 707-320B platform is clearly visible, even the windows were present, although mostly plugged. 71-1407 did enter service and was upgraded to current USAF standards, but the model is not an E-3B, nor is it a 552nd Airwing bird. The badges on the side are those of Air Force Systems Command and Electronic Systems Division. I found only one photo of the actual plane, Link : Image:First E-3 sentry.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Others may have more info to share… Thanks, Al. |

Great detective work Al!
You are right. The 552nd was only reactivated in 1976 at Tinker AFB (formerly the wing was located in Florida and flew Constellation AWACs) and received their first E-3 on March 23, 1977. That first plane carried the tail number 75-0557. Here she is at the arrival ceremony on Mar 24, 1977 - clearly in different paintscheme from the rollout model. http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w...fb-24-3-77.jpg Here's how she looks now, 30 years on: http://myaviation.net/?pid=01179389 |
