Wahoo island airfield

Hello all,

This is my first attempt at making an airfield in 1/400th scale. I have learnt a lot during the process and it is not as easy as it looks, especially when I see the most
professional looking airports on this website.

The airfield is generic one, set in the 1950's ('ish), on an imaginary island chain
approximately 1000 miles NE of Hawaii.

There have been compromises on markings etc, as during my research, airfields of
that period were not as rigidly marked out as is today.

I started with the use of hardboard, mainly because of weight. The board is 105cm by 183cm (41" x 73" in old money) approx'. This size is also handy, as it can support my
1st Choice airport foil as well.

I painted a coastline on the left side of the board with a bit of sea and beach next to the seawall which protects the runway. I painted the board with a grey primer paint
and then poster paints (duly mixed), for the runway and track and apron. The grass area was standard green matt emulsion paint. I masked the section on the right side for a road when painting the lighter colour of the apron. Other photo's to follow
shortly.

Re: Wahoo island airfield

Well...it seems one of my airports! Beautiful texture of the colors, also the beach and the sea are well done! Did you use tempera colors?

Re: Wahoo island airfield

Hello Charter, It was through following your posts and inspiration that I started this project.
I used water based poster paints ( I think that is the same as the tempera paints). I also used posca markers, as you recommended on other parts of the airfield. This will become more obvious with the photo's to follow.
I am well ahead of the photo's posted so far and by the weekend everyone should see the finished project.

Re: Wahoo island airfield

Wahoo Island airfield continues to develop. The basics are now complete. I have used a yellow posca marker for the track and apron markings, even though during the 1950's these were white. I did this, as I will use the airfield to move forward into the 1960's (ish) when the yellow markings became more popular. So it is a compromise.
The same applies to the aircraft stand lines, which are a composite of those I have seen on different photo's of the period.

Re: Wahoo island airfield

Thanks for the encouragement. The next set of photo's should see the airfield coming to life with those lovely prop' 'planes. (time to break out the Benny Goodman swing music).

I chose the name Wahoo Island, as I wanted the airfield to be situated in the Pacific Ocean, north east of the Hawaiian islands in a tropical setting (unlike the grey european country, where I live).

I can therefore use the pacific rim countries to fly too and from. I have also cheated in the creation of my imaginary chain of the islands of Wahoo, in that I have moved Europe to the west coast of the US to enable those airlines to appear at my airfield.

I have a 1st Choice airport mat, which fits on top of the existing board, so that is another airport (unamed and unsituated as yet) to create another destination.
