How do I make a runway?

I've had a go at making some home-made runways, but they look rubbish. I would like to ask for some help in either making one or where I can get one for my 1/500 airport. The current runway is breaking up all over the place and has been on the airport for about 5 years now and I think its time for a new one

Any help you can give would be great
Thanks

Re: How do I make a runway?

I painted a black base colour, then stage by stage I added the white lines with masking tape. It tuck a few days and was a lot of hard work but the out come is very good.

My runway can be seen on this video : YouTube - IT'S BACK ! Blackpool Resort International Airport - BRI - 1:400 Scale Model Airport.

All you really need is:
  • Can of White and Black paint. (Or what ever takes your desirer)
  • Paint brushes
  • A lot of time and patients
Sadly, I have not pictures but I will try and post some later.

Re: How do I make a runway?

I'd avoid using "can of paint" and go with using spray instead, it gives a better finish IMPO. Also go with a grey/dark grey colour for the runway.

If you're spraying onto wood, make sure you go over with a primer and give it a second coat.

(Try to go for Matt and not Gloss)

A spray 'can' can make a much better job, I sparyed two old British Rail coaches white and it looks very smart just a like a normal release would look like.
But its really all down to the persons skills, personally I like a good old fashion 'can of paint', depending on whats the task is.

P/S - MYT DC-10 Cheers for the negative rep, this helps me see where i have made mistakes and improve

Re: How do I make a runway?

Or print a real runway from google earth as I did. More realistic than that is hard to achieve.

Re: How do I make a runway?

A tip I use is to firstly paint the runway Black then add the line detail using either thin sticker strips from Hobby Craft like these

3 x PEEL-OFF STICKERS - Thin lines No.2 white on eBay (end time 15-Sep-10 17:06:31 BST) pt=UK_Crafts_StickersScraps_Decoupage_SM#ht_892wt_ 1137

or buy one of those correction/tipex roller machines to apply the lines like this

NEW Pritt Compact Correction Roller Tape 8.4mm x 8.5m on eBay (end time 04-Sep-10 20:56:02 BST)

In Google Earth, zoom in on a runway you want and take screen captures of the picture on you computer. Sounds like a very tricky way of doing it though as you would have to fit it all together once printed all out...plus be in the correct scale.

I recommend painting your own one as you can make it unique to your own model airport.
