MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Greetings, fellow model airport enthusiasts.

Here I present the ongoing fictional airport trilogy of "MAGIC," namely the Mid-Atlantic Group of Island Colonies, created in the 1:500 scale.
These three islands are situated in the mid North Atlantic Ocean, located approximately 2,300 miles east of the U.S. state of North Carolina and 2,300 miles west of Portugal.

First picture is of the main terminal of San Ysidro International Airport "YSX" from the land side:

OOOOPS--if someone could mention exactly WHERE I need to paste the URL Flickr BBCode in wings900, and also if it is the whole code, or do I need to modify it/take something out. When I pasted the link in the body of the note, all that appears is the link but I want the picture to appear in the thread without the viewer having to click on the link. Thanks!!

Cool looking airport! I love that satellite kind of terminal

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Overview from above: the satellite concourse contains the "B" gates, 5 in total. As you can see, the airport is congested and is lacking for space--that is what happens on a small island with only a little flat land available!
Note--I have made this diorama of the complete island, so in upcoming pictures you will see scenes of the rest of San Ysidro in the background.

...Allegiant taxiing onto runway 10. There is a jumbled forest of mangroves visible just south of runway 10/28, as well as the old rusty-brown steel truss bridge linking the island of San Ysidro with St. Barton's island. San Ysidro proper actually consists of 10 little islands in a closely-knit cluster. Separate from these 10 islands, are the islands of St. Francis (450 miles north of YSX) and Dromedarius (500 miles due east), both of which in time will be covered here as well.

Your layout is fantastic. I am fascinated by your parking arrangements. The surrroundings are well-made.

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Here we see an AA flight at gate C-9, getting ready to depart for Philadelphia. American uses the A319 to San Ysidro from PHL during the relatively off-peak months of May and September. Also visible in the foreground is the pedestrian bridge linking the main terminal with the satellite Concourse B.

Finally, a night time view. I think having an illuminated airport brings the project to life! The process of adding lights, the wiring, drilling of holes, making translucent buildings, etc. greatly increases the complexity of creating the diorama and obviously extends the production time line immensely, but it is totally worth the extra trouble. It is fun to turn the airport lights on in the evening, or early in the morning before work, just to enjoy looking at it in the dark. Kind of like the joy we get from viewing our Christmas tree, but airports are year-round!

Thank-you very much for your compliments! I must say that I enjoyed working out the theoretical maximum number of planes at this space-constricted airport, given my desire to include a satellite concourse. Admittedly, things are almost unrealistically tight, but with the use of good airplane tug operators, everything does work:cool:. In truth, I think that parallel concourses (like at Atlanta Hartsfield) represent the ultimate in space optimization, but I had been yearning to make an airport with a satellite for quite some time, so the impractical/artistic/visual side of my personality won.

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Not necessarily a sexy photo, but this shows the 'guts' underneath an illuminated diorama.

As previously mentioned, drilling all of the holes (in the right places and of the right depth), placement of the lights, etc. is labor intensive. But in addition to getting a project that lights up, other 3-D diorama elements become a possibility using the 'crawl space' under the main platform, allowing for features such as this ramp leading down to the baggage processing facility underneath the terminal.

MASTERPIECE! A real masterpiece Pete. A futuristic airport with a futuristic terminal building and a lovely landscape (wonderful the elephant making the bath). Everything is perfect, from the apron to the runway with an extreme, beautiful attention to details.
Great airport my friend.
Positive rep. well deserved and added.

Thank-you for this recognition--it is especially meaningful coming from you, our mentor and expert here on the forum!
Re: the playful elephant bathing in the sea next to the runway, he is just one of many surprise details that are going to be found as this photographic essay evolves, so stay tuned (and keep your eyes peeled) for more:cool:

First of all, thank-you for liking my airport! Since this is a fantasy airport, coming from my own playful mind, of course there is a story behind the elephants (there are others hiding in the mangroves)! As it turns out, there is a full-fledged elephant sanctuary on the neighboring island of Dromedarius 500 miles to the east, and when the 'teenage' males reach puberty, they are separated from the herd (as they would do on their own in the wild) and brought to this area of San Ysidro (via cargo plane, of course!) and are held here until space is readied for them at a zoo somewhere. I am going to take your suggestion and at some point, do a few photos covering the cargo situation:cool:

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Since I made mention of the elephant sanctuary on the island of Dromedarius in my reply to Speedbird 001 above, I will offer just a teaser picture of the sanctuary (note the presence of several toppled palm trees--elephants do this all the time!) and adjacent runway 9/27. As can be seen in this view, Dromedarius has a much larger airport, with full-length parallel taxiway, and a runway with edge and centerline lighting. The island geography is desert, reminiscent of the Canary Islands, which is in stark contrast to the lush, green, semi-tropical oasis of San Ysidro.

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Another "teaser" photo from Dromedarius, this time showing a TWA L-1011 (final colors) taking off over Playa Fideos--this is the urbanized end of the island, which is in contrast to the serene desert setting of the elephant sanctuary. Also, my apologies but that as of the date this picture was taken, the aircraft gate situation was still being established at DRX, so there is quite a jumble of (mostly) AA planes on the taxiway and apron while the terminal configuration was being worked out. By the way, as any fantasy airport modeler knows, this is one of the most enjoyable parts of the planning process:cool:

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

One more thing that these dioramas offer, is the 'artistic license' to incorporate geographic features, structures, and other miscellany of the creator's discretion. In the case of Dromedarius, among other things that I fabricated was a 1:500 rendition of the famous Miami Babylon Apartment building, which was the first landmark structure made by Architectonica (a Florida-based cutting edge design firm). Here is a picture of the original:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9c1a201c_z.jpg

The next photo shows my re-creation of this beautiful structure, as seen from the land side:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ecbbb0d6_z.jpg[/url]

Finally, a bayside view shows the building sandwiched in between the Marriott and Gulf hotels. I show this perspective, because it indicates how this structure is somewhat shorter than the buildings on either side of it, being in the flight path of arriving and departing planes from runway 9/27 (see the post above with the departing L-1011 picture). Sadly, the real version of this landmark building is being removed and replaced by a skyscraper; thus as I always am harping, part of what we do as both model airplane collectors and as diorama builders is for nostalgia and the sake of preserving history.

I am glad that you enjoyed my posts so far. Thank-you for the compliments! I will be posting much, much more, as all three related MAGIC projects (San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis) are far from completion. I plan on showcasing as many of my 1:500 planes as possible, too, as well as diorama and building tips plus the occasional urban planning message thrown in for good measure.

I hope to make all of this as light-hearted and entertaining as possible; I think we share a great hobby.

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

San Ysidro Diorama, The Early Days

The current San Ysidro consists of six, 17 inch X 34 inch panels and has runway centerline lighting, taxiway lighting, and most buildings illuminated. There are 10 gates with a linear terminal design (with 5 gates) and a hexagon-shaped Satellite concourse (5 gates). The diorama topography includes numerous hills and small mountaintops--an archipelago of volcanic origin. This is a far cry from the 'original' San Ysidro made on just three panels, without any runway or taxiway lighting, and just a few illuminated buildings. The terminal design was linear, four gates, none of which had jetways. The terrain was specifically very flat, of coral origin, to create a Florida Keys effect.

The original 'circa 2014' concept was to reflect a simpler, easier, more compact way of making a diorama.

Here is Delta, making the pirouette turn in preparation for takeoff:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3c5819e5_z.jpg

A gaggle of American Airlines planes at the original San Ysidro: the "W," photographed here for experimental purposes, is admittedly way too much aircraft for this scenario!

San Ysidro, Winds of Change

Over the years, I created several rudimentary mountains to mimic Mt. Otemanu on Bora Bora, Diamond Head in Waikiki, and The Pitons of St. Lucia. Although the "Diamond Head" rendition had already made a cameo appearance as Mount Rumplestiltsken in my (now discarded) Punta California diorama, it occurred to me that it was such a waste not to use these beauties to create some topography for San Ysidro.

Here is a Virgin Australia 737 taking off from San Ysidro, version 2.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...95ca28d8_z.jpg

Also, a picture of three beautiful, all-white DC-8 Stretch aircraft at SYX, v. 2. (The DC-8, in all its different lengths, wingspans, and engine options, is my all-time favorite plane--got to fly it on Air Jamaica, United, and Delta. There were some interesting planes back then!)

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

San Ysidro--The Epiphany

After the small-size (3-panel) SYX v. 2 diorama was removed from storage in early 2019, I realized many things. First of all, the concept of the airport being a small operation, almost all by itself on a barren tropical island with just a small town implied an UNSUSTAINABLE airport operation. What point would there be in displaying a diorama with 2 American Eagle flights a week?? The decision was made to create instead a vibrant (albeit populous) little island, drawing much inspiration from St. Maarten, St. Barth's, Key West, and Waikiki. Quite a lot of ingredients in this casserole!

I explored the 'theoretical maximum' number of airplanes using an expansion of the existing linear format: 4 737-800 or A-320 airplanes, along with 2 regional jets

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5407d0ee_c.jpg

I also decided to double the number of panels from three to six. This would allow for a good-sized local population living in three distinct towns, and enough hotels and ancillary businesses to support a vigorous airline operation. Also, the length of the runway would be doubled and taxiway lighting and centerline lighting would be retrofitted to the existing version 2 panels that were to be utilized in San Ysidro version 3.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2d6d21c2_c.jpg

The increase in panel numbers was also to become my new layout standard (total dimensions 34" x 102"). Thus, the other projects being worked on (Dromedarius and St. Francis) would be made at this same final size. I constructed a rolling display base of this size, so I could move the entire diorama around my condo and allowing access to different sides of the project as needed.

Regarding the buildings, which are hollow and have translucent windows (for lighting purposes): I essentially use two techniques, one using pre-made acrylic boxes covered with acrylic sheeting, the other using Lego substructures covered with "Plastruct" architectural acrylic textured surfaces. I will do a tutorial on both ways of doing buildings in an upcoming section of this thread. Due to their perfect right angles, consistent sizes and shapes, and durability, at this point for me, Legos are indispensible in diorama making in the tiny 1:500 scale. Obviously, when handled with great modification, they really don't look like Legos and have made my life in this hobby so much easier!

Thank-you for the compliments! After initially exploring the use of fibre optics, I settled on using Christmas lights which give acceptable runway/taxiway results, and superior illumination for buildings. The runway component requires the drilling of two different sized holes, a large one in the diorama subsurface board to hold the body of the lamp, and then a tiny one sized just for the nipple tip of the light to stick through the runway or taxiway surface. The Christmas lights MUST be LED due to their brightness--light does not propagate to the tip of regular incandescent Christmas bulbs so if these were to be used, there would be no lighting effect for those areas. At any rate, despite being in tropical Florida, you might say it is Christmas at my house, every day!

Thank-you! Regarding the rolling display base, I commissioned a company in Miami to make a removable acrylic top to sit on the base that I made, for covering the diorama (in four separate sections), much like the acrylic boxes used to display model airplanes, or other hobby/curios, except much larger. This way, there is always a display-quality diorama available for viewing in my house that remains protected from dust, etc. I never have to put the diorama away, and visitors always love looking at the model. It brings out the aviation geek in everyone:cool:! What a conversation piece--you hear stories ranging from the trip to Grandma's house in Wisconsin, to outrageous worldwide travel tales. At any rate, this whole display ensemble has increased the pride I have in our hobby, and it kind of reminds me of something you would find in a museum, or architect's office. I will eventually post a picture of this cover in this thread.

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Sooooo, it was decided after a lengthy thought process, to build the final version (v.3) of San Ysidro, with a linear terminal and a satellite concourse, which I have wanted to do for a very long time. The satellite was going to be modeled after the old "Concourse B" of Milwaukee's Mitchell Field, which faithfully served North Central Airlines (later part of Northwest and eventually Delta Air Lines) for all the years that I was growing up there. Here is a picture of that concourse taken last January, when I was up there during some really bad winter weather.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5fcdc38c_c.jpg

The maximum number of planes would be arranged as follows:

1) Five at the terminal
Gate A1 = A321or 757-200
Gates A-2 and A-3 = two regional-sized jets
Gate C-9 = one B-737-300 or A319 sized plane,
-and-
Gate C-10 = up to a 777-200 or B-787-9 (to be used with taxiway restrictions on all other planes),
2) Five at the satellite
Gates B-4, B-5, B-7, B-8 = B-737-800 or A320 sized planes
-and-
Gate B-6 = up to a 767-300 or MD-11 (WITH CONCURRENT TAXIWAY RESTRICTIONS ON OTHER AIRCRAFT).

Shown below is a picture of the finalized gate / aircraft parking arrangement, photographed during the secondary painting procedure

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...134ee731_c.jpg

I painted the abovementioned second (slightly-darker) shade of grey acrylic on the aircraft parking positions, because I had observed this technique applied to airport aprons by other master dioramists here on the forum. There is quite a lot of expertise to learn from here at Wings900!

Retrofitting the existing runway for centerline and end lighting, and the taxiways for green directional and blue edge lighting, was a nightmare! Great care had to be exercised in drilling the right-sized holes in the right places, all the while being careful not to damage the pre-existing work.

In the end, the effort was totally worth it. Here is the inaugural night flight, an Aerolineas Argentinas A330 bound for Buenos Aires.

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Firstly, to all the Irish (and honorary Irish) people on board:

!!! HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY !!!

We shall begin our Irish tribute with our first subject, the lovely Aer Lingus A320, docked at San Ysidro International Airport's Gate C-10 (note the innovative triangular hangar in the distance)

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9dcf94fb_c.jpg

This closeup overhead view shows the flexible gate situation at Gate C-10. There are three customizable parking arrangements made possible by the design of this gate. One configuration is for whenever a dual jetway boarding scenario presents itself, with everything ranging from an A321 or B-757 up to a B-777-200. In such a case, the two bridges can be positioned to accommodate doors L-1 and L-2 at the same time. A second layout is depicted in this example, with just the forward door being used for boarding this A320. Single door jet boarding is often best done with the primary jetway in its fully extended position:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b83b34ff_c.jpg

Finally, on St. Patrick's Day, Aer Lingus sent a lovely A330 on the Dublin route. In this view, we see it preparing to return to Ireland with a takeoff from runway 10:

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Luck of the Irish!!

For awhile, the Aer Lingus fleet was a strange assortment of planes. One example is this L-1011 making a low pass over the reefs at the south end of San Ysidro before returning to the Emerald Isle. The lucky starboard passengers were given a glimpse of a pod of three whales frolicking in the bay, a final delight coming at holiday's end. While the passengers were obviously thrilled with this sighting, it appears that the whales couldn't care less!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...93874ed8_c.jpg

The arrival of efficient narrow-body jets has allowed the marketing benefits of increased frequencies to small destinations (like San Ysidro) over what was previously only economically viable with larger widebody planes making just one or two round trips per week. Such was the case with Aer Lingus' B-747 once-a-week flight from Dublin back in the 1970's, seen here on takeoff:

Thank-you for your kind feedback sir! I have planned (in the near future) additional information (and of course a bunch of photographs) depicting the hangar at San Ysidro, including the rationale for its triangular shape and bi-level roofline. As you probably guessed, this too relates to the space constraints prevailing at this busy little airport. Stay tuned, and I appreciate your viewing and participation!!

Thank-you for the compliments, Cal. I fondly remember your Dubai diorama, and indeed the fact that it was illuminated further increased its vibrant character!! Regarding the surrounding scenery for the first two airports (San Ysidro and Dromedarius) of this thread's trilogy, for me it has made the photography and storyline aspects extremely fun to do. At some point I will post a few "teaser" photographs of the third island's main airport of St. Francis, which, instead of being a complete island like the first two, instead is intended to be just a part of a big island. By the way, that airport has space for three A380s and a couple of W's all at the same time, one long runway, and a shorter diagonal. It has some scenery, too, for creating interesting takeoff and landing pictures, but at St. Francis there will be much emphasis on the relatively large-sized airport itself.
Keep watching, more to come!

Thanks for the kind words Pete - the Dubai diorama I had was great, but unfortunately there were many important models which never got realised in 1:400 scale. Anyway, the scenery around your airports definitely makes for very interesting photography and it really brings the diorama to life. I'll look forward to seeing photos from St. Francis, especially if you're planning to show up to three A380's on the ground at once!

P.S. I really like the various L-1011's that have been making an appearance lately!

Gate C-10, boarding scenario #3:

Besides the two boarding choices discussed in the Aer Lingus A320 section above, the third boarding option for San Ysidro's Gate C-10 is for when two planes need to be accommodated at the same time. Here, we see an American Airlines A321 boarding from position C-10 "R" while an American Eagle is simultaneously being accommodated at C-10 "L" (air stairs are required and entrance to the concourse is via a door directly into the building):

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...98432b7f_c.jpg

Here we have an overhead view of the above mentioned Gate C-10 parking algorithm, alongside the close-in Gate C-9 occupied by the AA A319:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c3516093_c.jpg

A final view of AA's C-9 / C-10 parking suite--how sweet it is, seeing all of these American Airlines NC tails!!

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

What's up with the air shuttles?

Thanks to its "Open Skies" policy, an extrardinarily active inter-island air shuttle market has emerged, connecting San Ysidro with the neighboring islands of Dromedarius and St. Francis. American Eagle competes strongly with Iberia, and to a lesser extent jetBlue, on these flights. In the opening scene, we have an American Eagle jet just a few seconds from touching down on runway 28, arriving from Dromedarius, an island about 450 miles to the east.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6ed5356b_c.jpg

Departures and arrivals must be timed VERY tightly when Runway 28 is in use during a wind coming from the west, because the runway/taxiway is a shared situation on the eastern half of 10/28--departing planes have to backtrack down the runway to the turning point, and then take off. Soooo, just as the landing Eagle flight whooshes past the lineup of other a.m. shuttle flights waiting to take of, another little regional jet quickly enters the runway!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ab1e9b6f_c.jpg

Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum provides some serious inter-island competition for American. Some days, there are so many Iberia flights that you might mistake yourself for being somewhere in Spain! Here we see two little regionals parked at Gates A-2 and A-3--no jet bridges here, embarcation and dis-embarcation is via air stairs:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...50f8cff9_c.jpg

JetBlue also flies between San Ysidro and Dromedarius. It is a minor player on the route, but seeing their beautifully-painted Embraer jets is always a welcome sight!

It's funny that those of us in the 1:500 scale are envious of the 1:400 releases, and you guys feel the same way towards our scale! In a perfect world, we would both have all of the planes that our collective hearts' desire! Thanks for mentioning in a positive way, the Aer Lingus, Eastern, and TWA L-1011 models that made their appearances here. The Tri-Star was one of those beautiful and unique planes, that suddenly slipped out of usage and was retired in favor of more fuel-efficient types. I took a chance by putting them in some of my scenes, but I will continue to include pictures of historic airplane models from time to time for the life of this thread (along with many modern types, of course!) just because I feel it is of value to depict the broad spectrum of aviation, both past and present. Keep enjoying, and thank-you for following along.

JetBlue is having a moment at San Ysidro. In the first photo of this sequence, the notorious 'Bluericua' A320 flight from San Juan lands on runway 10:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a085cdbc_c.jpg

Next, we see jetBlue's Boston flight landing right behind the Bluericua:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c84e76ae_c.jpg

Finally, it appears that as of 10:00a.m., Concourse B has been overtaken by jetBlue!
The flight to San Juan is being prepared at Gate B-5, the JFK flight will be leaving from the A321-sized Gate B-6, and the return to Boston will depart from Gate B-7. One of everybody's favorite carriers and truly an underdog, let us cheer together: "Go BLUE!!"

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

British Airways was serving San Ysidro with non-stops from Heathrow using a 787-8 for awhile in 2018-2019. The enormous wingspan of this advanced jetliner just barely fits Gate C-10:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6fa0d6af_c.jpg

BA changed their marketing strategy in late 2019, by offering THREE non-stop flights to the United Kingdom, albeit using smaller planes. Here we see the two early afternoon arrivals from Manchester (the A319 in the foreground parked at Gate B-5) and from LHR (the A320 with Sharklets in the background at B-6):

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9639c8df_c.jpg

British also flies a late afternoon service to London, operated by this A320 with the old-style wingtip fences. This departure will undoubtedly be delayed--the tug would LIKE to push the aircraft back, but is blocked by a gridlock of tugs towing their baggage trailers  !!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3d0b4763_c.jpg

Here is a real piece of eye candy: Comair 737-800 (a licensed BA product operating in South Africa) operating on its ferry/delivery flight heading to Jo'Berg!!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1e166a1a_c.jpg

Finally, as part of my ongoing "Blast from the Past" series (whereby a beauty from the past will be featured), we pay homage to the British L-1011:

Etihad was considering adding an extension to their seasonal service to Malaga, continuing to San Ysidro. This would have been a wonderul summer getaway route for residents of the Gulf. "OUT OF AFRICA" Part I

This past summer, I re-visited Africa and spent time in both Kenya and South Africa. First we see a giraffe that insisted on coming home with me (AND took the coveted window seat to boot!!), and a picture of some elephants at the watering hole at the safari lodge.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8ab40cd1e4.jpg[/url]
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6fefc2bf2f.jpg

Our summer vacation started in South Africa, and then for the second half of the trip we flew the Kenya Airways Dreamliner from Cape Town to Nairobi. In this picture, the KQ 788 is in San Ysidro after doing some proving flights for new routes to the United States; we see the plane turning to take off from runway 28, heading back to Kenya.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b4837bac_c.jpg

In another "Blast From The Past," there is a photo of South African Airway's 747-SP leaving San Ysidro after having stopped there on the flight between Miami and Cape Town; the tail of a SAA B-707 is visible also sticking out from the hanger:

Finally, an Air Afrique DC-10 was in San Ysidro, getting its No. 2 engine serviced:

With the repairs complete, we see a departing shot of this wonderful bird heading back to Abidjan:

Thank you for your admiration and compliments! This airport in its current version was started about one year ago--I had three of the six panels sitting around from 2014 or so but they were all radically modified to accept a longer runway, lighting, a completely different terminal/parking arrangement, about 1000 more trees, and hills/mountains. I work at a slow pace, and sometimes weeks go by without doing anything, and then suddenly I will get really creative and super productive. But, even when I am not physically working on the project (there is more to do), in the back of my brain I am still contriving improvements, techniques, and additional constructions--I consider that thought process part of the overall construction, however, because there is no way to just sit down and produce this kind of airport nonstop. All of the scenery makes for fun photo shoots. I am glad you are enjoying the thread, and remember there is more to come.

Thank-you Cal. I am always trying to work out some angle to this airport's storyline to accommodate a diverse cross-section of my 1:500 model collection. As the "Out of Africa" section indicates, there is often a personal connection to the models that I have accumulated over the years/I try to have models of planes that I have flown, and Herpa's slow and limited pattern of release has not helped the 1:500 sector of the hobby. Nonetheless, I am grateful for what we have. By the way, that Kenya Airways Dreamliner was surprisingly hard to come by--I had to order it from Japan! Keep watching, I am going to come up with more.

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Delta One:

Although the primary air carrier between the United States and San Ysidro is American Airlines, Delta Air Lines ranks a strong second both in terms of number of fights, and number of passengers carried, between the U.S. and SYX. Delta's scheduling pattern mostly relies on late a.m. arrivals, and then early p.m. departures, using Concourse B. Here we see two Delta 737-800 aircraft being readied for departure from Gates B-4 and B-5:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1a08f7a9_c.jpg

The 757-300, a transplant from the Northwest Airlines fleet, flies to Atlanta during the off-peak months. Here is an example backing out from Gate B-6 on a glorious day back in October, 2019:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8f78647c_c.jpg

The A321 is truly a 'perfect aircraft' for SYX, given the island's mid-Atlantic Ocean position, equidistant from Europe and North America. Two Delta A321 aircraft are seen here taxiing for departure for JFK and BOS, respectively, while a Boeing 717 has just arrived at Gate B-7:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a62a9210_c.jpg

Finally, a view of a Delta A321 positioning for takeoff from runway 10. In the background is the amazing plane-spotting venue, the Sunset Beach Hilton:

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

"Delta Two:"

Now comes the second part of the Delta NC anthology.

First of all, we see the beautifully proportioned 767-300 at Gate C-10. This aircraft flies the route between San Ysidro and Atlanta for most of the year, except for the slower months during spring and autumn:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c9b9dc66_c.jpg

Requiring special operations, namely a suspension of all aircraft taxi operations when this plane is arriving or departing, and needing the use of a tug to and from Gate C-10, is Delta's 777-200. The plane rarely visits San Ysidro, but is seen here during the busy Christmas season:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b087caa1_c.jpg

An unscheduled visitor is this Delta Connection regional airplane. It is seen departing from the SYX hanger after getting some maintenance work done:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...59521373_c.jpg

Delta's A330 is an infrequent visitor to San Ysidro, but does fly in from the U.S. East Coast when additional capacity is needed for special occasions. This example is seen departing for Boston over the Thanksgiving 2019 holiday rush:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...873000b5_c.jpg

OMG! The stunning Delta A350-900 lands at San Ysidro!! It is at SYX only for station familiarization and training purposes; there are currently no plans to fly it here on a regularly-scheduled basis:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...542cf386_c.jpg

Finally, another "Blast From The Past." Delta brought its last 747-400 to San Ysidro to give all the devoted plane spotters there one last look before retirement. This view, admittedly not the the most flattering of the jumbo's back side, shows the jet immediately upon landing from Atlanta:

Although I mostly fly domestically with American (MIA and the OneWorld Alliance both have me trapped:surprised), I will absolutely agree that Delta is by far the best U.S. carrier, with Alaska and JetBlue tied for second place. Nonetheless, all of my AA Advantage miles have allowed me much, much travel on the greatest airlines of all, Qatar, Qantas, Etihad and Cathay, so at least there is a silver lining to using American Airlines. Next, I will begin a tribute to some more European carriers, and perhaps some building techniques. Stay tuned and thanks for following along!

Strange Circumstances = Strange Flight Patterns

With the sudden collapse of Air Italy and the cessation of flights at the end of February, 2020, there were some unexpected flight operations. Helping to bring people back to Miami from Milan was this wet-leased Oman Airlines A330, shown here repositioning to begin this airlift, initially flying from Muscat to South Florida via San Ysidro:

The large-wingspan Airbus fits snugly into Gate C-10:

After a quick one-hour service, the Oman Air flight resumes its journey to Miami with a take-off from runway 28:

Hi Cal,
I think I have about 700 1:500 models:eek:. To be honest, there are some that were impulse purchases and don't really make sense relative to the location of my dioramas but as you can see, with the way aviation and airports are, there are still so many ways (i.e. unscheduled stops, ferry flights, repairs at the hanger, salvage of derelict planes, etc.) to work them into the display anyway! And, there is part of the collection that has nostalgic value because it involves planes that I have actually flown on, including the Oman Air--we went there for spring break last month, just before this new virus started having a global impact. Glad to have taken a vacation then, because it looks like traveling is off the table for now (and sending my prayers to all of those people impacted). Thank-you again for following and commenting!

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

Precious Cargo on Board:

Although the bulk of the island's staples and commodities arrive to San Ysidro by ship, there exists a steady and reliable demand for air cargo to transport perishable imports and exports, as well as other items that are needed on an expedited basis.

The Air Cargo facility at SYX consists of an ingenious, bi-level design, whereby the tarmac (upper) level offers onloading and offloading services to cargo aircraft, while the lower level acts both as a sorting facility and also serves the delivery trucks:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c89d5806_c.jpg

Here is an aerial view of "S * Cargo" (which is by the way, a play on the French word escargot, also significant in this case because of the volume of seafood exported from San Ysidro). The dual level of this construction is visible here:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7584da7e_c.jpg

The lower-level roadway is open only to cargo vehicles and as such van and truck traffic can go quickly from the cargo center to the town and back. Here, a FedEx van whooshes along the roadway directly beneath a FedEx 727-100C:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...38e64f57_c.jpg

A UPS 727-100C has just finished loading its cargo and will depart SYX shortly:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f89111c1_c.jpg

DHL is one of the main air cargo carriers at San Ysidro. The favored aircraft for this purpose used to be the venerable DC-9, as seen in this photo:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2baf1efd_c.jpg

DHL has upgraded their cargo services at SYX to the much more capacious 757-200, shown here in this view:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2ee12003_c.jpg

The Cargo building is shared by the airport emergency services--the EMS vehicles are visible to the right side of the facility:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f40a15c0_c.jpg

Finally, in another "Blast From the Past," we see an old DHL DC-8 Stretch. I miss seeing these beautiful birds coming in to Fort Lauderdale early in the morning--truly a sight for sore eyes!! Thank goodness, we can preserve the memories of historic aircraft and the romance and nostalgia that surrounds aviation, through our hobby:

Glad to have taken a vacation then, because it looks like traveling is off the table for now (and sending my prayers to all of those people impacted). Thank-you again for following and commenting!

That's quite the collection Pete! You've definitely been very creative with the storytelling to make sure that as many of your models can be featured here as possible - it's great to see such a variety on aircraft of display. It's always nice to have a model of an aircraft that you've actually flown on.

Anyway, nice to see your airport also has a cargo section! I'm loving that UPS B727 and the DHL B757 is also very nice. Do any widebody freighters land here? Something like an MD-11/F or B747-400/F would be great to see!

Indeed, there is seasonal widebody freighter service to San Ysidro! For example, during the annual lobster harvest, there is a very high demand for the export of these delicious crustaceans! Here we see a UPS 767-300F loading up at the S*Cargo facility:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d4142d95_c.jpg

This past year saw quite a bountiful yield of spiny lobsters, so much that UPS ran TWO daily 767-300 services to SYX. A second 763 (in the old UPS colors) waits for its turn to receive the precious cargo, while the NC example finishes loading:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c8019321_c.jpg

DHL also gets in on the seafood action: they deployed a 767-300 freighter this past season as well:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...20b89725_c.jpg

A few years back, an A300 freighter was sent by DHL as an occasional visitor to SYX whenever additional uplift was needed:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...64872117_c.jpg

During non-peak times, UPS flies this beautiful (albeit narrow-body) 757-200F to the island:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f1ab18e2_c.jpg

"Plus-sized" cargo aircraft cannot be accommodated at San Ysidro's venerable S*Cargo facility, and as such freighters larger than a 767-300 do not make regular trips to the island. However, special arrangements can be made for freighters with greater wingspans and/or longer fuselage lengths, on an as-needed basis. Here is a UPS MD-11 completing such a mission at SYX last autumn. I wonder what unusual cargo it might be carrying?

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e1bfd52d_c.jpg

Docking at Gate C-10, the MD-11 offloads its special cargo: a pair of enormous pretzels flown in from a bakery in Munich to kick off the annual Oktoberfest celebrations!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0a39ccb0_c.jpg

As a proactive company, UPS has also sent the occasional 747-400 freighter to San Ysidro for mock training exercises. As mentioned above, although regular scheduled freighter service is off the table for this size of cargo plane at this station, nonetheless one never knows when a 747 might have to call on the island under special circumstances, so staff needs to be familiarized with the plane. Here we see a UPS 747-400 after landing on runway 28:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...962604d9_c.jpg

Finally, in a "Blast From The Past," a UPS 767-300, resplendent in Olympic colours, heads back to the U.S.A. after taking off from runway 28:

Another great bit of storytelling Pete and great scenery as always - thanks for sharing a few more photos of some larger cargo aircraft! I'm very envious of your DHL B767/F as I've wanted one of those in 1:400 scale for a very long time. Anyway, another highlight was the UPS MD-11/F - it will be a real shame when these tri-jet workhorses finally fade away.

Thank-you Cal. Always a pleasure to do a comprehensive airplane type review--it gives my models the exposure that they would not otherwise get, sitting on the shelf! Related to this notion and on a broader note, one underlying theme of my thread is to show how a story line can justify the presence of a world-wide and diversified airplane model fleet, congregating at a single model airport. A case in point: if not for the story, the Oman Air plane featured above would never merit even a single photograph as part of any of my projects, because my airports are remote from that airline's home base and not part of the airline's normal route structure. I hope that other collectors can benefit from this point of view and fill their dioramas with planes from all over the place (and then share the resulting pictures with us here on the forum!). Wishing everyone here more happy collecting, and happy diorama-making!

I like Delta traffic because i love Delta, one of my most favourite airlines.
About cargo traffic unfortunately very often cargo airplanes are under represented, while all the action around a cargo airplane is something of fantastic.
Great display of cargo airplanes and great story about them and about the delicious food.

Thank you for the recognition and compliments, as well as for noticing the giant pretzels being offloaded from the special UPS Munich flight. This weekend I will put up another batch of pictures--I've got numerous other photography angles to explore at my facility!

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

It seems that Turkish Airlines flies to almost every significant destination on earth; as luck would have it, they fly to San Ysidro as well! The following sections pertain to their operations at SYX.

Turkish was using the 737 Max 8 on one of its two daily flights to San Ysidro. Here we see the Max landing on runway 28--a truly beautiful-looking machine:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...08a00b55_c.jpg

The Max 8 turning off the runway and heading toward Gate B-7:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f55ff859_c.jpg

After a quick service, with a fresh crew and full compliment of passengers, we see Turkish Airlines' 737-Max 8 at runway 28's turning point. This fantastic pose shows off the airplane's sexy scimitar wingtips:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a4fd8ee4_c.jpg

Wheels up and back to Istanbul!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...82b0ef6e_c.jpg

Well, with the grounding of the 737 Max 8, Turkish has had to return to two daily A321 flights on the IST-SYX route. Here we see the a.m. arrival from Istanbul, pulling in to Gate B-6:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b12f4091_c.jpg

And now, the TK A321 has completed a rapid turnaround and heads back home!

Thank-you for the compliments! I worked slowly and quietly on this airport for almost a year, and although the scenery is not 100% finished, I felt the project was far enough along to begin the thread here on Wings900. Much more to come, so stay tuned!

Turkish, Part 2

You've come a long way, baby! Check out this comparison of the Max 8 model to the 737-400. I think that overall, Herpa has made a lot of progress in our 1:500 scale:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fbfced0d_c.jpg

Here we see one of the biggest visitors to San Ysidro, the Turkish Airlines A330, arriving from Istanbul. The airline uses this plane during peak holiday times in the summer:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f726ae97_c.jpg

Now, two "Blasts From The Past:"
First of all, the amazing A340 making a rare appearance in San Ysidro back in the mid-2000's. A tight fit, but quite a treat for all of the local and visiting plane-spotters:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a6c4991c_c.jpg

Next, we see TWO A310's from Turkish Airlines visiting San Ysidro way back when, during the Christmas hoidays, 1995. The A310 was such a cool plane; I miss it a lot and I think it deserves a spot in this thread:

Congrats on the Turkish 73M8! Glad to see it at San Ysidro (which seems like the new Istanbul airport? ;))

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis

KLM at San Ysidro:
Being the world’s oldest airline and one of the most-recognized brands globally, KLM has a special place in the heart of aviation enthusiasts. It is only fitting that this amazing airline be honored with its own pictorial essay in this thread, so today’s posts will focus on KLM.

Part One: The Boeing Big Boys:
In the wide-body jet era, Boeing has had a long-lasting relationship with KLM. In this first picture, we see a Boeing 777-200 being prepared for departure from San Ysidro:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1aba8ed5_c.jpg

Here, another perspective of the iconic KLM 772. KLM alternates the 777-200 with the A330 on flights to the island, depending on aircraft availability and passenger/cargo loads:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3d48e240_c.jpg

As discussed in previous posts, the ‘super-sized’ Boeing 777-300 (the “W”) does NOT regularly serve San Ysidro. However, this next photo shows the KLM 773 preparing to continue its journey back home, following an unscheduled landing during the non-stop Amsterdam-Saint Maarten flight. With the technical issue resolved, the flight turns on to runway 10 for takeoff:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7e4523b8_c.jpg

The Boeing 787-9 is well-suited for service to San Ysidro, and may eventually replace both the Boeing 777-200 and A330 on flights to the island. This is an aerial view of a KLM 789 parking at the gate just after arrival at San Ysidro, before the connection of the airbridges to the plane:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5eb08954_c.jpg

This next picture, featuring the KLM Boeing 787-9, indicates how busy the afternoon rush can be at SYX! Due to a technical issue with the emergency slide, the L-2 door was not operable without the slide being deployed (!) so the airbridge was not connected for this flight:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5539e5aa_c.jpg

The 787-9 begins the return journey back to Amsterdam as it trundles down San Ysidro’s runway 10:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...60ae7fa1_c.jpg

San Ysidro hosted a trade fair a few years back. The Netherlands Pavillion showcased many of their excellent products, including the export of fresh flowers worldwide. A gigantic rose sculpture was created by artisans in Amsterdam as the centerpiece of this exhibit, and is seen here being offloaded from this 747-400 Combi aircraft:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...30db4a83_c.jpg

The “Combi” was substituted for the usual 777-200 on this particular day for the ‘rose mission,’ which was a surprise treat for the lucky aviation enthusiasts that were on board as well as the plane-spotters at the Sunset Beach Hilton (visible in the background) that live in San Ysidro. Here we see the flight on its return to Amsterdam:

I think the folks in Aalsmeer might need to have a closer look at the flower they sent out! Great to see so much blue in 'the tropics'
