Not only airplanes, but old and new airplanes, current airlines and airlines of the past, mythical models and workhorses of the various fleets, along with animals, boats, lights, trees...a real festival of beauty.

British Airways Anthology Continues: The “Landor” Years Part I:

The early 1980s were a sobering time for most of the world, as the realities of finite energy supplies, unemployment, overpopulation, etc. weighed heavily on all facets of the economy. Aviation was not spared these grim truths, and along with shorter periods of financial recovery in between economic recessions, airlines also had to adapt to increasing competition and highly fare-conscious consumers (and airline deregulation for U.S. carriers as well).

The British Airways “Landor” color scheme (1984-1997) reflected these more conservative times. This livery was an evolution of the erstwhile “Negus” scheme--the white fuselage roof became a very business-like 'Pearl Grey,' and the blue belly was a darker shade of midnight blue; the blue speedbird transitioned to a bright red speedwing on the forward belly, and the tail design was completely changed, acquiring the British Airways' coat of arms. So, without further adieu, the MAGIC thread will explore, in two sections, the elegant, timeless, BA “Landor” livery, beginning here with the narrow body fleet.

A Trident and a BAC-111 emerge re-painted in the new BA “Landor” colors; they are both preparing to leave San Ysidro for resumption of service on their respective routes within the U.K.:

. . . and then enters the turning circle immediately before taking off from runway 28:

Signs of economic hard times in the mid-1980’s: British Airways has downsized operations to San Ysidro to narrow-body 737 aircraft. The 737-300 at Gate B-5 in the foreground rests after its flight from Manchester, whilst the 737-400 in the background at Gate B-6 will depart shortly for LGW:

H a p p y E a s t e r ! !

Easter Sunday is the kickoff for Polish Heritage Week in San Ysidro. The event is proudly sponsored by LOT Polish Airlines:

One of the first orders of the day, is to unload the giant jelly beans arriving from Poland, as seen here coming off of a LOT 767-300 at SYX’s Cargo Center:

A lineup of historical LOT airplanes gathers on the runway, from left to right an IL-18, IL-62-M, and a Viscount 814, while a convoy of jellybeans drives past:

What lurks beyond this LOT Boeing 787-8? Could it be mound of blue snow? A blue raspberry snowcone???

Nooooo! It is a realistic 3-D laser hologram of a blue lamb cake projected on the clouds behind the plane!

Here is a close-up of ‘Bluey,’ the actual lamb cake at my house this Easter morning. Lamb cakes are an Eastern European tradition (and found in other traditional Catholic households as well), always a hit (and quite tricky to make). I do one in a different color, every year. Happy Easter to all!!

British Airway’s “Landor” Fleet Part II: The Widebodies:

A reflection of improving economic times later on in the decade, British Airways has up-gauged the equipment on the LHR route to this 767-300:

The lovely BA 763 at Gate B-6 will be departing for Heathrow in about an hour, while the in-bound Gatwick service (the 767-200 in the background) taxis to gate C-10:

The Gatwick flight receives passengers while being serviced at Gate C-10:

The Manchester flight, also a 762, is seen taxiing behind the LGW aircraft just after arrival:

On a different day, a rare visit to San Ysidro is made by this elegant BA Tri-Star flying the Manchester route, while the DC-10 service from LHR is seen landing in the distance:

Always a visual treat, this British Airways DC-10, looking particularly dashing in the Landor colors, is serviced at gate C-10:

The view from the mountaintop looking towards the airport is quite stunning on this particular afternoon, with the opportunity to see the British L-1011 AND the DC-10 at the same island venue:

Concorde – Fest: San Ysidro’s Tribute to the Supersonics!

Touted as the ‘greatest assembly of supersonic commercial planes ever,’ San Ysidro’s ‘Concorde-Fest’ was held at SYX with a great deal of fanfare. A visual feast for photographers, enthusiasts, and anyone else who appreciates the fusion of engineering and beautiful design, a total of ten supersonic commercial airplanes gathered for this amazing event.

The first model to present was Concorde in the joint manufacturers’ Aerospatiale/BAC livery:

Next to show was the BA Concorde in ‘Negus’ colors; British Airways launch route for the aircraft was London-Bahrain:

The famous BA/Singapore hybrid is seen here; it flew London-BAH-SIN with direct (but subsonic) connections onward to Sydney:

That threesome pic of the Concordes remind me of my BA calendar from 2000 and something….they placed 5 of them like this I think. Awesome calendar, every page Concordes.

I remember seeing that a few years back at a hobby shop in Germany. Wish I would have had the presence of mind to get one

It was cool and could become a keepsake or maybe even a collector's item!

Concorde – Fest: Day 2

Day Two of Concorde - Fest was quite a feast for airplane enthusiasts as well, bringing in not only local islanders, but also like-minded outsiders from around the world. Join them with the second half of this SST anthology!

Looking amazing in Braniff colors, this Concorde operated subsonically from DFW-IAD (and thereafter supersonically to LHR or Paris as an onward BA or AF flight):

The “Pepsi” Concorde, part of the soda company's marketing efforts during the product’s world-wide re-branding in the 1990’s. By the way, the plane could fly supersoncially for only 20 minutes or so, due to the heat buildup caused by the dark-coloured fuselage!

In a surprise appearance, the TU-144 makes this festival a complete SST tribute!

Finally, a group photo taken of the entire SST lineup at the conclusion of “Concorde Fest.”A great time was had by all!

The Pepsi concorde is a fun and unique model, I kinda like the advertisement they made out of the Concorde
