Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis
LOT to Love!
As one of the oldest surviving airlines in the world, LOT Polish Airlines has had many years to demonstrate its dedication to technical expertise and passenger service in the realm of commercial flight operations. Today’s installment covers the airline of my ancestors!
The first view shows a venerable IL-18 wearing the carrier’s 1960’s colors, as it taxis past a pair of Pan Am DC-6’s during an atypical (for usually sunny Dromedarious) overcast afternoon:
The LOT IL-18 revs up the engines for take-off, heading back to Warsaw Okecie, as seen from the rocky hiking trails located to the northeast of runway 27. The spires of John-Paul II Catholic church are visible in the extreme foreground of this view:
Moving ahead to the jet age, the Polish carrier acquired the IL-62 in the early 1970’s; here is one such example turning onto Dromedarious' runway 09 for a return trip to Krakow:
T-Tail Time: The LOT IL-62 reaches skywards, while a Pan Am 727-200 inches along the taxiway:
LOT broke away from its long-standing patronage of Soviet types, introducing the 767 in 1989. Here a 762 has just arrived at DRX, turning off runway 09 and heading to the gate.
The 767 became LOT’s long-haul workhorse; two such examples are being serviced at Dromedarious gates D-1-A (in-bound from Warsaw) and D-3 (preparing for its return to the motherland on a charter flight to Krakow):
Boeing 737s became a regional European mainstay for the carrier, and they were also found further afield, even flying to places like Dubai and Dromedarious in the mid-1990’s. This is a somewhat unflattering hind-quarter view of a LOT 737-400 operating the WAW-DRX service in 1995:
In its continuing support of Boeing, the 787-8 eventually replaced the 767 as LOT’s primary long-haul type:
Thanks again to all for following, and stay safe during your holiday preparations!
Pete

Seems like the Polish have finally found their escape in tropical Dromedarius.
Neat stuff as always, stay safe Pete!

Indeed, MAGIC represents a warm trio of islands to go to during the cold, grey Northern winters!
Thanks for the ongoing participation and compliments!

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis
Happy Friday, Friends!
Not your usual weekly anthology, today’s installment puts the spotlight on the most recent arrivals to my collection. Indeed, today involved a happy drive back from the post office, with my latest clutch of models just in time for Christmas. Most of the planes were immediately dispatched to Dromedarious, where the 44 th annual Wildlife Conservation Federation was holding a meeting.
Leading off is a special visit to the airport by the Emirates’ A380 “United for Wildlife” special edition aircraft, in procession with some of Dromedarious’ own prized pachyderms. The plane was here as part of a world-wide delegation to promote the preservation of endangered creatures:
Among other notable conference participants was the Republic of South Africa, with their attendees arriving on board this South African Airways A350-900:
The Swiss delegates came to the conference via this specially-chartered Swiss 777-300, seen here taxiing to the gate after arriving on runway 09:
As an aside, Swiss normally serves Dromedarious with the trusty A320 Neo; one is seen in this picture taking off for Zurich:
Participants from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden came to the meeting as a group, together on board this marvelous new SAS A350-900, seen at Gate D-1-B:
The delegation from the United States arrives at the Wildlife Conservation Conference on board this United Airlines’ 777-300, seen here finishing its landing roll on DRX Runway 09:
Today’s pre-Christmas photo spread concludes with a photo of Delta’s new A220, which is coming to Dromedarious as an additional service for the next few weeks to meet the added traffic needs of December and January. I wish everyone a safe and blessed holiday season!
Pete

That Delta A220 looks amazingly clean in the desert Pete! I also love the Swiss and SAS appearances, as well as the joke with the gorgeous Emirates Wildlife A380!

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis
Great to see some more modern types back on the scene at Dromedarius Pete! Complete with your now expected fun amount of storytelling, this made for a great update! Anyway these are all great additions, particularly the two B777's. I hope South African Airways manage to survive and fly their A350's again as they look superb. The Delta A220 is also very nice and seeing the 1:500 version really highlights the fact that the 1:400 equivalent is in fact an enlargement of this very Herpa mould.
Thanks for sharing!

It seems that the brownish colors of the desert make an excellent background for the close-up photography of our little models. I agree that the Delta livery is particularly stunning in such an environment--that red logo just pops! I'm coming up with something to post for immediately after Christmas//super busy at my real job as a dentist right now--everyone wants their new teeth for the holidays/Cheers!

Thank-you for the compliments! The (occasionally outrageous) story lines are a way to create the circumstances for airlines and airplanes at my airports, that would never otherwise fly to them on a scheduled basis. Plus, you know I do love my elephants . I appreciate your ongoing patronage/such support nourishes and encourages the creative process. Wishing you all the best this season,
Pete

Thank-you very much for these kind sentiments, and I greatly appreciate your following the numerous posts in this thread! The stories are fun to tell and give support for the presence of a diverse mix of airlines and aircraft at these remote outposts in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I am thinking of adding another destination in the MAGIC Islands group in early 2021--perhaps an atoll with a coral runway. I have always been fascinated by the exotic cocktail that results with the mixture of the tropics and aviation, so stay tuned!
All the best to you this season,
Pete

Thank-you so much for showing your appreciation throughout the life of the MAGIC thread! I am planning more things for 2021, and am considering adding another island (an atoll, perhaps?). Hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Re: MAGIC: San Ysidro, Dromedarius, and St. Francis
Happy Holidays,Friends!
The year 2020 has been plagued by an extraordinary cascade of terrible circumstances. Indeed, there is not a soul out there that hasn’t been affected in some way by these unrelenting waves of heartbreaking illness, economic hard times, and uncertainty about the future. Yet, my hopes and prayers are that moving forward, we can draw knowledge and inspiration from the many lessons that have presented themselves as a result of all of this, and from them, create a new normal that will better sustain us in both good times and bad.
Meanwhile, share with me if you will some good cheer on this special day: I have assembled a collage of images from Christmas preparations at Dromedarious from both yesteryear (“the good old days!) and today. Please take a moment and find some enjoyment, laughter, escape, solace, peace of mind and spiritual renewal by looking at these lighthearted pictures to mark the occasion!
The first image comes from the late 1990’s. A local bakery sponsored a Panettone competition, to see which country could produce the most delicious version of this holiday bread. The treat has its origins in Italy, and with the dispersion of Italian immigrants globally, the tradition has spread around the world and taken hold throughout the Americas in particular. The two finalists in this competition, both submitting giant Panettoni (to feed all of the eager spectators AND the judges of the competition), were from producers in Milan (delivering via a special Alitalia flight) and Sao Paolo (coming to Dromedarious by way of a VASP charter). Here the two delectable brioches are unloaded from their respective MD-11 airplanes upon arrival:
In this view, circa early 2000’s, these large, gummy bear balloons were just offloaded from the Finnair MD-80 (seen in the background) and inflated, now making their way (complete with police and equestrian escorts!) to the town center for the annual Christmas parade:
This gorgeous Santa Claus sculpture, made of over 1,000,000 Lego bricks, was created in Denmark especially for the Dromedarious Christmas Festival several years ago. Graciously transported to the island in several sections by this Finnair MD-11, the artpiece has been painstakingly reassembled and will be moved to the town square shortly:
Spreading the holiday cheer from the U.S.A. is this oversized snowman, made of real snow imported (via this American Airlines 789) from the recent blizzard in New York! The figure was quickly assembled by a team of specially trained snow sculptors and will be moved to a park in the city for children to jump around and play on, as it proceeds to melt in the afternoon heat:
“Frosty” waiting impatiently—he is going to melt!
Finally, the mascot for the Dromedarious Christmas Festival-2020, an inflatable polar bear sculpture, is seen here changing a beacon light on the tail of this Lufthansa 748:
Wishing all the best to everyone in the coming year with love, peace, and a commitment to making things better In 2021,
Pete
