A European International Airport (1:500)

Hey guys,

It's been a while since I've posted anything on this forum, but I'm pleased to say that I'm back with a new airport. After my Bakersfield and San Romeo layouts, I wasn't overly pleased with them as I felt that they didn't adequately highlight my collection enough. My collection primarily focuses on Europe and so I mainly collect European narrow/widebodies aswell as African, Asian, and North American widebodies.

Therefore, I have created a new airport, without a fixed location as I couldn't really think of one, but I can say that it is based in Europe and that it receives traffic from all four corners of the globe, perfectly suited in order to showcase my collection.

So, onto the pictures we go

This is the main terminal (T1). As you can tell, it's a satellite terminal with check-in and security control done underground (such as DXB's Terminal 3). As you can see, its quite busy today.

Now, onto the traffic of today. The time is around 13:00 - 13:30, with the last North American aircraft heading out, Middle Eastern arrivals, and Asian heavies preparing for departures to their respective hubs.

The remote stands are currently quite busy, which in the future will be the site of T2. Ethiopian 77L has finished deboarding after arrival from Addis Ababa and is being towed to its stand for the next few hours. Vietnam Airlines 787-9 is ready to be towed to its gate ready for a flight to Hanoi. Cathay Pacific and Thai Airways's triple sevens are both awaiting their next flights, to Hong Kong and Bangkok respectively.

KLM's 737-700 and an SAS A320neo being prepped for departure to Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

Flybe offer quite an extensive route network from the airport. G-JECY is loading freight for departure to Birmingham. Behind it is a Norwegian 737-800 and a LOT E175. These are heading to Oslo and Warsaw.

IMG_1109 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

One of Malaysia Airlines's 3 A350 "negaruku" aircraft at the gate today. This is being fueled up for the 12hr trip to Kuala Lumpur, whilst a Pegasus A320neo is awaiting its passengers for Istanbul, visible behind the gorgeous A350.

IMG_1110 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

Swiss A320 arriving from Zurich, whilst a Saudia 787-9 has just pulled in from Riyadh, alongside an Aer Lingus A320 from Dublin and a SAS 737-700 from Stockholm.

IMG_1111 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

Qatar's A350-900 at the gate loading up for its return to its Doha-Hamad hub. Behind it is a beautiful American Airlines 777-200 heading off to Dallas-Fort Worth

IMG_1112 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

We see the AA 772 once more, aswell as an Air Canada 787-9 awaiting clearance for departure to Toronto aswell as an Austrian Airlines Embraer 195 which has arrived from Vienna.

IMG_1113 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

Emirates sends its whale on the DXB-Insert IATA code here two times daily. It parks at one of the four A380 capable gates and is accompanied by an Air France A321 from Paris Charles de Gaulle.

IMG_1114 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

Icelandair's Hekla Aurora is ready for departure to Keflavik, alongside a Speedbird A319 which has arrived from London-Heathrow.

IMG_1115 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

United Airlines operates to 6 destinations from this airport (EWR, IAD, IAH, LAX, ORD, and SFO). This 787-9 is departing for the latter.

IMG_1116 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

A gorgeous Etihad 77W stands at the gate alongside a Turkish Airlines A330-300. These aircraft are in the midst of deboarding after arrivals from Abu Dhabi and Istanbul New Airport.

IMG_1117 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

Some typical European/Northern Africa aircraft all ready for flights to their hubs. Finnair A321 to Helsinki, airBaltic A220-300 to Riga, Egyptair A320 to Cairo, and a Lufthansa A320 to Frankfurt. Note the Iberia Express A320 heading to the active for its departure to Madrid.

Ex US Airways bird in the American colours taxiing for departure to Charlotte. Also visible is a BA Cityflyer E190 holding short of RWY09 before departing to London City.

IMG_1119 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

Look at all those tails. Wonderful view imo

IMG_1120 by Skyteam67, on Flickr

My next priority is to improve my photography skills in order to showcase the beauty of the airport. I should be doing these updates regularly now that I have a lot more time, so any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Also, if any of you have any ideas on what to call this airport and where it could be situated, again feel free to leave your suggestions below. Hope you enjoyed the pics guys

Re: A European International Airport (1:500)

Beautiful mega-hub full of interesting traffic. This is the dream of each country (and each collector), to have an airport where to place all the possible airlines with regional/domestic, international and intercontinental flights.
I appreciate your work on the apron, and also Herpa terminal building fits very well.
Well done.

Re: A European International Airport (1:500)

Amazing layout with a great variety of traffic to complete the look! I like the single long terminal design - I've done something similar with my own layout. It would be great to see an airline make a hub here if you're able to decide on a fixed location for this airport!

Thanks for sharing your photos!

Such a cool airport, with a great variety of airlines and colors! Really nice! I hope this layout is pleasing your wishes

There are some colorful European liveries, and seeing them together is always a nice thing! The Hekla Aurora, for example: fantastic!!!

Thank you Cal. The single terminal design maximises the amount of aircraft you can park at the terminal, which is why it was quite easy to decide on what type of building I wanted to have for the airport.

I had been thinking of basing the airport in the Netherlands, but I don't think that the Netherlands requires two mega hubs to serve the country. I will definitely keep thinking about where I could base it.

Thanks once more for your comment

Thank you Leo. To finally be able to show you guys a larger part of my collection is much more enjoyable. I agree, the Hekla Aurora is a wonderful aircraft and is definitely one of my favourites.

Thank you! I enjoy designing airport schedules and so a large airport like this allows for a lot of diversity. I'm glad you enjoyed the pics, but I'll try and improve it in the future.

A well-organized and very busy airport, with loads of pictures for us to enjoy. You can sense the hum of activity and it almost feels like the diorama is in motion. Great job!!

That's a great airport! I like the satellite terminal a lot!
May I ask how you made that terminal?
