Re: Fossil Awards

CW, Yet again, I have never actually mentioned Co2, all I've ever said is that from my own personal observations, something is changing and that quite frankly all I really want is clean air anyway and better quality of life (heck, you ever said you were all for cleaner air yourself!).

Agreed, there are many other aspects going on, HOWEVER, seeing what it is capable of doing Co2 isn't exactly blameless, I mean come on!!

LOT, yes it's a lot more complex with more than one thing being responsible, be it CWs Solar wind/cycle thing, a whole manner or earth bound problems, or even bits of both. The earth is apparently meant to be heading for an eventual rise anyway after all - Global warming and cooling does exist. I think that people, either through self preservation, populartiy or other excuses, are trying to see if it can be kept in bay for the foreseeable future.

There's nothing wrong with us having a clean death rather than a dirty one!!

Re: Fossil Awards

This is scary...

UPDATE: UN Draft: CO2 Emissions Should Be Cut 50-95% By 2050

The Copenhagen Climate Change Treaty Draft – wealth transfer defined, now with new and improved “dignity” penalty « Watts Up With That?

It's clear it has nothing to do with the environment or you or your future or your kids future. It has a lot to do with $$$, greed and power though.

Well, I for one, vow to drastically reduce my personal methane emissions by 50% by the first quarter of 2010. I will no longer eat beans or other potentially methane producing foods. I figure if I can prevent warming of my own microclimate in my house, I can run my 4 A/C units for only 23 hours instead of 24 hours a day. Just doing my part, you can thank me later.

Re: Fossil Awards

Well CW, these things are always about money. Do you think a Government will ever do something for free or in a fit of selflessness?? I remember being in the Shetlands and I asked a local 'what happens when the oil dries up?' and without missing a beat, he said that they will have wind power instead.

In a set of islands that are quite small (and, incidentally, closer to Norway than most of the Scottish Mainland), money from oil has helped fund many many different public services and they are quite big on their leisure/community centres. Seriously, you can be practically out in the middle of nowhere and on the horizon looms a leisure centre, it's all a bit surreal at times!!

Re: Fossil Awards

The world has dug itself into a hole but now we are too deep to get out of it so we keep on digging?
I think there is clean energy and alternative sources of fuel out there that we should be looking into.
The bottom line is money and that is all people care about. I know that there is always a glimmer of hope though.

Re: Fossil Awards

Once battery and other fuel cell technology advances sufficiently, we'll be away in our metaphorical little electric cars!! Has to be a clean form of charging the batteries mind.

Re: Fossil Awards

We are finding huge amounts of oil galore. I believe the term fossil fuel in a misnomer. Oil is abiotic meaning it is produced miles under the earth and keeps being produced. Back in the early 1900's "scientists" said we would be out of oil by 1950. We only found more. I heard of some oil fields that went dry and now filled again. We discover oil all the time.

So if it is true that oil is a fossil fuel, did billions of dinosaurs all congregate in one spot and step into a 10 mile deep pit so they can die? Why only in the middle east, Texas and Alaska? Dinosaur bones are found everywhere, in good condition, not very deep in the earth.

Re: Fossil Awards

You see, I am involved with (of all things) Railway Preservation, and there are plenty of preserved electric locos and units out there, but because of Helf and shafety in this country, setting up a power supply over a certain voltage, and run by volunteers is utterly out of the question, so if you want to run your trains, you have to restore them to mainline standard and just that alone will cost at least 1 million GBP. You'll never ever see the money ever again.

Now, if there were batteries developed that were

A. Not amazingly expensive

and

B. not amazingly HUGE, requiring the train to be modified to carry them.

Then, I'd be happy, and what's more, preserving 'Leccies' would cease to be a relatively small and specialised arm of the preservation movement.

Re: Fossil Awards

Oh yes, and the North Sea!! I did say that there is plenty of oil out there waiting to be discovered. My Shetland question was merely a theoretical one.

Agreed, after seeing a lot of these people (mostly politicians) who are trying to pass such things, I don't like what I'm seeing one bit. I still say that we should wait for this technology to become better and feasible for most people. Otherwise, it will become a good case of class warfare from the top, and most anyone else will notice it. I think we all have seen what happens in these situations.

Productively done green technology (and I'm not just talking form the household POV, I mean industrial POV too). Just something we gotta take one good step at a time. Afterall, progress rarely comes just by signing a damn piece of paper.

Greenthought by force and unreasonable taxation, as I've said, just another form of class warfare from a certain few at the top. It won't work, and will likely have much worse consequences. Be it being forced to use greentech that is in reality worse than what was phased out, or even worse, the whole system collapsing and going back to environmental standards that are far worse than what we have now.

I would also like to see batteries that are more safe to dispose of. With the current nature of batteries, it can often be a dangerous process if not done right, even going as far as to poison a water supply. This sorta goes back to one of the points I made earlier in my post.

Re: Fossil Awards

I do think we need to change some of our behaviors. BUT I am still not convinced(or ever will be) that people are destroying the Earth with CO2. It seems rather ironic that every time the Earth has had a warming period civilizations THRIVED and now when it starts to warm up again people freak out and believe the end is near.

Now, back to driving my M1 Abrams to pick ups some milk at Walmart.

Hmm.. each person has a different opinion which is great. It's also great to 'hear' these opinions too
