Today, March 1st 2021, one of the greatest Italian excellences turns 60. The Frecce Tricolori
, in fact, were created on March 1st 1961 by Major Mario Squarcino, choosing the best Italian Air Force pilots. Already in the '30s, however, Colonel Fougier created a group of aerobatic pilots using five FIAT CR20s giving life to the "Mad Patrol" which stood out in the "Day of the Wing" in June 8th 1930 and the powerful Germany in 1938 when Hitler visited Italy.
To date the PAN - Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale (National Aerobatic Team) consists in ten Aermacchi MB-339 aircraft, the largest of the world, and delights millions of enthusiasts every year with stunts that have entered the collective imagination and into the hearts of thw whole world, not only of us Italians.
Of the endless anectodes and exciting stories surrounding the myth of the Frecce Tricolori, i would like to write about the history of the "Prancing Horse", which later became the symbol of another Italian excellence, the legendary Ferrari.
The "Prancing Horse" was the symbol of the 4° Stormo da Caccia: when it was established, on 1 June 1931, squadrons of the 1° Stormo da Caccia were incorporated and, among these, the 91st "Squadriglia degli Assi" of which Francesco Baracca was part. Francesco Baracca painted the coat of arms of the "Prancing Horse" on the fuselage of his Spad S.XIII and the Squadron took this symbol as emblem. When Enzo Ferrari whon the first Savio Circuit in 1923, Francesco Baracca mother (Countess Paolina) told him "Ferrari, put my son's Prancing Horse on your cars, it will bring you luck", and so it was. Enzo Ferrari only added the canary yellow on the background, the color of the city of Modena.
And so two myths intertwined: Frecce Tricolori and Ferrari.
Fortunately there is not only Alitalia...
