Grounded

Hi folks,

First and foremost I hope everyone stays safe during these unusual times. I don't know about the majority of you, but some of us must be experiencing some withdrawal symptoms of not being able to fly (including me). I saw a post somewhere the other day where folks reflected on their personal flight log, and I found it to be a rather interesting thought.

So if you're willing to participate, answer the following questions reminiscent of better times when we could still travel the globe:

First flight:
Most recent flight:
Shortest flight:
Longest flight:
Favourite airport:
Least favourite airport:
Best flight experience:
Worst flight experience:
Window or Aisle seat:
Go to airline:
Once and never again airline:
Aircraft flown on:
Airline most flown on:
Favourite destination:
One place I still need to visit is...:

Hope you guys are willing to partake, at least for me it's an interesting reflection on my recent travels! I'll be the first to respond!

Re: Grounded

First flight: BRU-SXF Virgin Express 737-400

Most recent flight: WAW-BRU LOT E195

Shortest flight: Note sure but probably BRU-AMS?

Longest flight: AUH-SYD

Favourite airport: MUC, HKG,

Least favourite airport: TXL

Best flight experience: Flying a CV550 in Tonga. Upper deck 747 on LH SEA-FRA was also quite nice!

Worst flight experience: Flying Vueling RNS-BCN + Turkish MCT-IST

Window or Aisle seat: Short flights: Window, longer flights: aisle (of course, I prefer to have a whole row to myself or a window seat with direct aisle acces)

Go to airline: On EU flights I like Eurowings and Brussels Airlines in economy. They aren’t premium airlines at all but they’re cheap and offer a good service. In business British Airways has my vote.
For long haul flights I don’t have a preference TBH. At least in economy, I don’t find Asian carreers to be that much superior to its competitors.

For my North American friends, I would recommend Porter.

Once and never again airline: Imdon’t like Vueling and Ryanair but if it’s my only or best option I wouldn’t mind too much.

Aircraft flown on: 717, 727, 737 (all series from -200 to -900ER except -600), 747-300, 747-400, 747-8, 757-200, 767-200, 767-300/-300ER, 777-200/-200ER/-200LR/-300/-300ER, 787-8, A220-300, A310, A319, A320, A321, A330-200/-300, A340-200/-300/-600, A380, F-50, F-100, CV-550, E170, E190, E195, Erj-145, Rj100, Bae146, ATR 42, ATR 72, Q400, MD11, MD80, MD90, CRJ100, CRJ200, CRJ700, CRJ700+ probably a few other light aircrafts

Airline most flown on: Brussels Airlines or Lufthansa

Favourite destination: I love any place I’ve been but Hong Kong and Berlin are my favourites.

One place I still need to visit is...:
Anywhere I haven’t been yet.

Re: Grounded

Haven't checked in on this forum for quite some time. Thought I'd give it a visit again and visit some threads

First flight: Amsterdam - Heraklion: Transavia 737 back in 2012

Most recent flight: JFK - Amsterdam - KLM 777, March 13th this year, about 4 hours before the US blocked all the passenger flights. More on this later

Shortest flight: Skiathos - Kefalonia - TUI 737, about 40 minutes, was an absolute blast rocking TOGA out of Skiathos!

Longest flight: Amsterdam - Toronto, KLM 747 March 3rd this year. My first and final time on a KLM 747

Favourite airport: Toronto or Amsterdam

Least favourite airport: Kos (LGKO)

Best flight experience: Amsterdam - Toronto on the 747

Worst flight experience: Rome - Amsterdam, Vueling A320

Window or Aisle seat: Window 1000%

Go to airline: KLM of course

Once and never again airline: Vueling and Ryanair

Aircraft flown on: B737, B747, B767, B777, E190, A320 family

Airline most flown on: Transavia

Favourite destination: Toronto or anything in Greece

One place I still need to visit is...: New York unfortunately. Beginning of March I visited the US and Canada for the first time in my life. I flew to Toronto in the 747, then to Washington with Air Canada and finally to New York with the plan to stay there for 5 days, however little did I know when I arrived there on the 12th I'd be on the plane home within 24 hours due to the travel bans the US was starting. So I definitely wanna go back to New York to visit it properly . This also unfortunately meant I flew back on a 772 instead of the 787-10 which my initial flight was booked on. Was a sour way to end my vacation. (And probably my only vacation this year)

Other place I still want to go to is New Zealand.

Interesting to read you were in Toronto around the same time as me Thom! Were you there for leisure? And how is life for the rest?

I flew AMS-YYZ on the 4th of March (PH-BFY, seat 1A), so that was awfully close Robin! I spend a few days in Toronto for leasure, visiting the CN Tower, Toronto Islands, Niagara Falls, Distillery District.. Flew back on the 8th (PH-BFW), mainly to experience the 747 in Biz.

Sorry to hear about your trip to New York/Toronto, shame that it didn't materialize in the way you wanted it to. I hope you'll be able to return in due time. Life's been good, I'm in good health and that's the most important right now. How about you?

Wow thats awfully close indeed, I was there from the 3rd until the 7th, after that I flew business to Washington which was very nice. What did you think of Toronto? In my opinion it was a beautiful city and I certainly want to go back at some point. The Niagara Falls are stunning.

Yea it was a real shame it had to end like that but best decision to head back early I feel. The rest of my trip was very nice though, Washington DC is a beautiful city and so is Toronto.

My life has been good, healthy as well! Still studying in Amsterdam as I encountered a little hiccup but all has been good

Haha I used to travel really a lot with my parents (over 70 countries).
Among unique aircrafts I flew: A twin otter of the Ecuadorian Air Force and an EMB Brasilia of Saereo (in 2008 I think), Druk Air A319 (2008), Turkmenistan Airlines 717 (2015), Uzbekistan TU-154 (2010), Chatams Pacific CV580 (2011), Air Botswana ATR 72 (2011), Malaysia 747 hibiscus (2005) and many more.

While Iíve seen plenty of wonderful places and flew unique airlines and aircafts all around the world (and I realize that Iím very lucky for that) I donít enjoy travelling to remote destinations as much as I used to.

Some excellent weather during that period! Did you also spend time at Niagara falls? I think Toronto is a very enjoyable city, I recommend it for a short city trip! I agree with your decision though Robin. Especially now that we know NYC would be the centre of the pandemic! Good luck on your studies!

Jeesh, 70 countries.. Very impressive stuff, seems you were lucky on some of those rare aircraft types. Meanwhile I've flown a bazillion amount of 737s because we flew to Transavia to all our holiday destinations.. Lately I've been spending more time on KLM though!

We did exactly the same, lovely tour indeed. I've finished my Bachelor's last year and I'm progressing with a masters.

Re: Grounded

Agreed, really great idea for a thread!

First flight: probably PHX to EWR, or something similar, when I lived in Arizona and was visiting relatives back on the east coast. Too young to really remember though
Most recent flight: LAX - BOS Jetblue A321
Shortest flight: LAX - SBP UA CRJ200 Can't have been in the air for more than 40 minutes really
Longest flight: PHL - FRA US Airways A330-300
Favourite airport: PDX, both the airport itself and the beautiful approach with Mt Hood, Mt Adams, and Mt St Helens visible.
Least favourite airport: Has to be EWR. Multiple times I've had delays there so bad that its been easier to just rent a care and drive 8 hours home
Best flight experience: A delayed UA flight from ORD to Lansing, MI as a 4 year old, where we got bumped up to first class, and the pilot let me in the cockpit (after 9/11, but back in the days before it was so strict).
Worst flight experience: US Airways A330 PHL - FRA. The inflight meal had gone bad, and I, along with about half the flight, got food poisoning mid air.
Window or Aisle seat: Window seat any day
Go to airline: Delta. Worked for them in high school and the loyalty stays.
Once and never again airline: There isn't any airline I wouldn't fly. But I do hate Ryanair as a guy with wide shoulders.
Aircraft flown on: A319, A320, A321, A330-200/300, A340-600, 737-300/-500/-700/-800/-900ER, 747-400, 757-200/-300, 767-300/300ER, 777-200ER, MD-82/-88, CRJ200/-700/-900, ERJ-145, E170/175/190
Airline most flown on: American/US Airways
Favourite destination: OGG. Beautiful approach and landing between the mountains, and an even more beautiful island.
One place I still need to visit is...: New Zealand. Been my dream destination for years.

Also, Robbin and DutchCollector, it's nice to know there are some other college aged people on the site. Best of luck with your studies!
