Re: Views from the flight deck

Last night i flew to Colombo, Sri Lanka and back, a very long flight and mostly over water so what to do? Take pictures of course!
20190123_153018
As we exited ETOPS and approached the Southern Indian coast to cross over at Cochin, unfortunately it was very hazy so i couldn't see much of the coastline, just a very long white beach and then nothing again!
20190123_184502
After landing in Colombo we were made to vacate the runway at the very end and wait on the taxiway since we were about 25 minutes early and the gate was stil occupied, here is a Sri Lankan A330 also waiting for its stand to become available, whilst just to the right, you can see the landing lights of another Sri Lankan A330 taking off
20190123_191631
20190123_191647
Once we had finally arrived at our gate, i took the opportunity to get some fresh air and check to see if the fuel truck had actually started to fuel us yet! Also in the background you can see the tail of a Qatar A340-600 which landed after us, vacated at a taxiway before us and got to its gate first!
20190123_200855
Unfortunately the best picture i could get of the very Southern tip of India was in the pitch black, but yeah, i promise that's the tip of india!
20190123_214448
20190123_221859
On the way back i decided to play with the pro mode on my phones camera, an exposure time of 10 seconds yields some nice stars but an aeroplane is rarely not bumping around a tiny bit, so some stars are double exposed, second is a picture as we approached Muscat after crossing the Omani coast with a 4 second exposure, once again because of the bumps and the movement of the aeroplane, the lights on the ground are quite blurry... Must try harder!
20190123_222330
And finally a slightly less blurry shot of Muscat from the South... Enjoy!

Great shots once more. Just a question; why did you leave the slats down (and presumably also the flaps) upon arrival in Colombo?

Good spot! As a company SOP, unless we are in home base and the temperature is below 30C or we have to retract the flaps for fuelling, we leave the flaps in config 1 after landing and then it's actually 1+F since we have weight on wheels. This is to prevent an overheat in the wing anti-ice air ducts which live behind the slats, when the temperature is 30C or above.

Interesting A320 (and other Airbuses?) fact, in the air, setting the flap lever to 1 only gives slats. There are, however, 2 conditions where we can get 1+F in the air - When we set flaps lever to 2 and then retract to 1 OR when airspeed is below 100kts IAS though if you were doing less than 100kts in the air then something's going very wrong!

Re: Views from the flight deck

Interesting Daniel, I've seen it done before (and indeed under warm conditions) but I've been intrigued by the reasons. Furthermore, I don't recall seeing it as much on Boeing aircraft rather a lot of Airbuses.

It has its advantages but also disadvantages, for instance, instead of spending Valentines day with my other half, i will be spending the evening into the next morning on a plane! Something tells me it'll take more than a bunch of flowers and some chocolate to make it up to her

Re: Views from the flight deck

Recently had flights to Amman, Baghdad and Trivandrum that i was able to get some decent pictures during, and one special (to me) flight yesterday and you'll see why!

Some farms dotting the desert in Saudi Arabia on the way to Amman

And now for the "special" flight... Gemini released A6-AOA (albeit in the old colours which made the model outdated almost immediately ) but ever since then i've been waiting to fly her, and yesterday i got my chance on a double flight to muscat and then kuwait!

Here she is in all of her shiny new glory during our break back at home base

And i couldn't resist another selfie!
