POMPEII: a Roman Empire city destroyed by a volcano.

Ciao my friends.
Yesterday i have been to one of the most beautiful place of the planet, the Roman Empire city of POMPEII. Pompeii (like Ercolano and Stabia) was a very important city for the Roman Empire situated in the gulf of Naples, one of the most beautiful and rich along with Rome.
This is the aspect of the city before the volcano eruption

this is the "monster" with the city of Naples at the slopes, Vesuvio volcano (it is an active explosive volcano, the only in Europe and one of the most dangerous and studied of the world). The scientists are expecting an eruption similar to that of 79 A.D. but they don't know when this disaster will happen (even because at the slopes of this volcano more than 3 million people are living!).

This is what happened in August 24th 79 A.D.: Vesuvio exploded destroying Pompeii, Ercolano and Stabia and killing 2.000 people only in Pompei.

Pompei was invested by ash at 400 °C, then a mix of boiling mud and lava and the citizens had no time to escape. The majority of the people died because of the ash and the incredible, dramatic feature of this tragedy were the bodies of men, women, kids and animals completely covered by ash creating a mold, a stamp around the bodies. These stamps arrived to us, 2.000 years of sufference and then a terrible death.
For this beautiful (trust me: BEAUTIFUL!) trip to Pompeii i want to start from the end: the stamps of the poor victims.

I visited Pompeii back in 2003 then climbed Vesuvius afterwards. It was a very memorable trip on a very wet and rainy, misty day. It seems a lot more plaster casts and bodies are on display since then, your photos Charter are a surprise to see so many for viewing by the public.

It would be interesting to see how an eruption in the present day would unfold, though God forbid; hopefully it will result in no loss of life or property but I doubt that will be the case!

I have never been to Pompeii but i visited the ancient Ostia Antica near Rome: Pompeii seems a real city, there are part this 2000 years old city that could be lived without problems, two or even three floors still up with many rooms! Incredible. I am preparing the photos.
About the eruption, Vesuvio is like Los Angeles and the "Big One": the biggest earthquake ever in California will happen, the question is "when?", the same for Vesuvio explosive eruption and to evacuate 3.000.000 people in few hours is impossible.

You'd even be able to watch it live on a news channel if it's that interesting....

I suppose like you say Vince if Vesuvius erupted today they would turn it into a reality TV show. Frighteningly I think one day watching people killed on television will be a reality the way it is going.

Superb photos Charter once again, very 'moody'. Italy really must be the most beautiful country in 'western' Europe.

went there when I was just 14!!! was lucky enough to go on a 2 week 'educational school cruise'! 44 YEARS AGO! With 11 others from our class and over 1000 more other kids from schools around the country on the SS NEVASA. a converted troop ship. flew out to VENICE . the went to CAIRO, (saw king tut exhibition) GREECE ( the pathenon) CRETE, MALTA and NAPLES. so went to Pompeii on last day. can't remember too much, but vividly remember all the 'bodies' frozen in time.. and all the ruins. thanks for the 'memory' jog!!!

Ciao Robert, thanks to you for this memory! There have been many schools from many countries of the world (i met people from South Korea, China, Japan, France, Germany, USA, Canada, Spain etc.), many schools, in 2015 there have been 2.978.884 visitors at Pompeii! But i think that Pompeii at 17/18 years of age can't be appreciated as this incredible site deserves: when you're teenager, especially during holidays or a long trip as, for example, from USA to Italy (a country where you can enjoy the food, the sun, the sea and other important things for a teenager...

) you think at the fun, at the girls and how to spend your holiday time, very few remains for a city of 2.000 years ago 8except for the nerds, of course

)! I think Pompeii must be visited when adults, when walking in a street of 2.000 years ago where people like us have lived, loved and, sadly, died puts the excitement shivers. I will post the photos, there are important houses remained almost intact, showing all the opulence of the Romans living there.
So, i hope you and many other people can back in Pompeii, maybe living and viewing this incredible archaeological site under a different view.
