Re: Should the UK stay in the EU?

During 1914-18 millions of British and French, Italians and others died fighting German Imperialism. The result of our behaviour - ALL of our behaviors - by all of the victorious nations led directly and emphatically to the rise of Mussolini in Italy, and in 1933, Hitler in Germany. the devastating war that followed pretty much destroyed a third of Europe. France, led by General de Gaulle, who fought the Germans in both wars and was the countries wartime resistance leader, knew it could never be allowed to happen again. He began a process with Germany that ensured their friendship would become so strong Europe would never face such conflict again. That was the genesis of the EU. Britain, with its years of democratic process was asked for and provided dozens of lawyers and legal specialists who established the basis of the European Court of Human Rights. Britain helped write the democratic constitutions of almost every European democracy. Britain was instrumental in creating the EU. Every prime minister since has known that we need to be in not out. Ted Heath fought to get us in, Margaret Thatcher knew it had issues, but was fundamentally opposed to Britain leaving her entire career.

My parents lived through World War 2 as young children and became teenagers as it ended. I lost 19 relatives in World War One and 7 in World War 2. I have lived and worked in Europe - as 2 million Britons do today. Because of the EU. There has been peace in Europe because of the EU and its predecessor institutions.

The problem with those who want out is they don't see or realize - largely because it's difficult to visualize, the massive amount of good the EU does every day, that has and does and will affect our lives in a myriad of often barely perceptible small, but positive ways. Only three days ago for example the EU forced the mobile phone companies across Europe to end rip-off charges for calls and data while roaming. The amount of work and legal background effort that was required to make that happen is beyond any of our comprehensions. The phone companies weren't exactly offering to do it willingly. Next time you fly to Spain on holiday and it costs a few pence rather than a few pounds to call mum and dad or text them, remember that was the EU.

However most of all, I am proud of Britain, proud that it has its own uniqueness. I am also proud of every country in Europe for being as unique. We blame, because we can see failures clearly. We do not praise when success is substantive but virtually un-noticed. Britain should lead Europe, stay in Europe and direct Europe. From the front, not by sticking it's head in the sand, accepting its place as a second rate. Anyone under 55 will be adversely affected if we leave the EU. We will bear all of its rules and have no voice. Just like Norway and Switzerland. Stay, stand and lead. Let's not run from the challenge of leading Europe in a new direction, and restoring Britain and its influence in the world to a place it hasn't had since 1945.

Re: Should the UK stay in the EU?

Nobody is dictating anything and they never have. Britain provides commissioners, it holds elections to the European parliament. Britain has a voice and dictate ae a figment of the Daily Mail and the anti-press who blame Europe for everything. I have heard endless tripe about the dictate and as with everything its mostly propaganda. I used to think the EU was responsible for the Health & safety dictats in the UK. then I went to Germany and found out they didn't have half of it. Then I found, like so much in British life, its BRITAIN and the BRITISH Government that inflicts this stuff on us. Britain could have had a voice at the top table but thought it could go it alone. It couldn't and realized that too late. Now, with Germany afraid to lead - and you can understand why, and France unable to, we have a chance to bring the many countries who want change to our side and change it all for the better. We can do it our way, probably for the first time ever. THEY, all of the EU nations, whatever their view, are afraid of us leaving. Lets not be afraid to tell them we are staying, but this time, we do it our way.

If they're afraid of us leaving that means one thing to me and that means Brussels and the rest of the EU is weak, there's a big world out there and they need the UK to hold their hand...As for Obamas "it could take years" cobblers that's exactly what it is...

Militarily, the EU hasn't become a major player in world.

What's the point of the EU then?
Germany's economy may be the strongest in Europe, but that's down to their organisation and business nous. Once again, it has nothing to do with successive British governments economic and business incompetence.

This is where my 'living in the past' argument comes in. Without stereotyping or whitewashing, it seems the majority of the 'out' campaign are older folks while the younger generation supports 'in'. I don't see any benefits for my age group in leaving, hence voting 'in'.

It doesn't help though Vince when Britain has done little in recent years to contribute. As I said, sending BNP and UKIP candidates to the EU parliament doesn't do much to improve our image in Europe or make European politicians well disposed to working with Britain. Outside the EU, they'll be even less likely to do trade deals with us leaving us at the mercy of China (as if we aren't already!).

Re: Should the UK stay in the EU?

I find it ludicrous when people say you need the EU to prevent Europeans from starting another war.
Keeping Germany without a viable military force would've done the trick.

Because the UK has been strangled by rules and regs,if this so called 'union' were worried about the threat from Chinese steel etc don't you think they might have done something about it by now....What tax does the US put on imported steel?...

In what areas do you think the EU delivered? Security, Growth, economic stabilty? Plese keep Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy etc. In mind.

Switzerland,Norway never joined the EU and are doing extremely well.
