I'm thinking about doing some customs as I have a ton of modeling experience under my belt, and I know I can pull off doing this. All I need to do is figure out how to scale down the decals. One question, though: Do you use regular spray paints, or lacquer based ones? I'm planning on using lacquer as they dry as smooth as a car finish, and in about 5 to 10 minutes. Alsoi, do you use clear gloss on your customs?

I use enamel paints applied via airbrush and let them dry for arround 24 hours.

Re: Northwest DC-10-30 1989 cs 1/500

I was going to strip mine down to the bare metal, and coat it with lacquer primer before painting it. The only thing I will have to be careful of is spraying lacquer clear over the decals. On rare occasions, it can ruin decals if too much is sprayed on.

Any suggestions as to how to scale down the decals for 1/500? Should I just measure the liveries on planes I already have, or is there another easier way?

By the way, lacquer paints will give you a way smoother finish than enamels. You also don't have to wait 24 hours for lacquers to dry. The fast drying time of lacquers is what helps them dry smooth. Lacquers also provide a harder finish than enamels. Enamels have a tendency to stay soft, and are more prone to fingerprint issues. From my years of experience painting model cars, I have found lacquers to work best. The only drawback might be when it's time to mix custom colors like, say, KLM blue.

Never used lacquers before and I don't know if I can find some with good quality here, also the fact that I have to mix all the colors is a big issue for me... Regarding the decals I buy downscaled decals from the regular manufacturers who make 1/72, 1/144 and 1/200 decals.

Arrow Cargo DC-10-30F 1/500

After so many delay finally I can share with you my latest custom, an Arrow Cargo DC-10-30F, reg. N478CT, 2004 colors, 1/500 scale. Because this one was being made in paralel of the NW and NW/KL DC-10s I made the same upgrades on the engines. One of the most complexes and really time consuming projects I've made to date, I don't know if a 757 in the same colors will follow, anyway I'm happy with the results.

Delta A320-200 nc 1/500

Here's the first of today, Delta Airlines A320-200, reg. N314US, 2007 colors, 1/500 scale. This one will have a new home in the Netherlands soon, together with the next three I'll publish. One thing surprised me: the absence of the bulk (small) cargo door on the rear fuselage, the real machine only have the two larger belly cargo doors, I always tought every A320 has one bulk cargo door together the larger two.

Delta MD-88 nc 1/500

The second custom of today is a Delta Airlines MD-88, reg. N908DL, 2007 colors, 1/500 scale. Actually my first MD-88 custom. The MD-88 was a request from Delta to equip the MD-83 with advanced avionics and "glass" cockpit, IIRC they are the same as on MD-90.

Delta Connection CRJ-200 nc 1/500

The third is actually my firdt CRJ-200 custom, a Delta Connection (SkyWest Airlines) CRJ-200, reg. N675BR, 2007 colors, 1/500 scale. This one was a real challenge to make: because the regs and ship numbers (on fin and nose) were wrong I had no choice but to make them, applying one by one, a really time consuming and patience-testing job. Because of that she will remain a one of kind custom, I don't want to ruin my sight... Anyway I like very much the final results.

JetBlue E-190 nc 1/500

Finally the last for today, a Jetblue E-190, reg. N334JB, 2010 colors, "Barcode" tail, named "#follow@jetblue", 1/500 scale. This one too demanded me a lot of patience and steady hand, because the thin light blue stripe was made in a bad way I had to hand paint it. Also the tail decals didn't covered the leading and trailling edges, so I had also to hand paint those places. But I'm really happy with the results and this one is a milestone too for being my first E-190 custom. Sure more JetBlue customs will follow. Enjoy!:)

Wonderful model!! I love your work. I am also working on my first JetBlue custom. It will not be as perfect as your models are, but for me it will be fine. May be it will be finished tomorrow! :envy:

Thanks Carlos. This one really demanded me lots of patience as I have to make the regs and ship numbers one by one; the tiny ship numbers on the fin (white) and near the nose (black) have 4 digit each!!!

Thanks! It's so sad there are so few MD-80s released, the only suitable donor is quite hard to find...

Great job!

What is that dashed big square on the nose? I never noticed it...

... and it doesn't seem to be present elsewhere. Is it specific to Delta?

There is a little open door at the back of this aircraft, is that what you thought to be missing?

Re: Delta A320-200 nc 1/500

Great job on this and all the other DL birds. I think the Delta A320s are unique in only having two hold doors (no third smaller door before rear exit).

mmu69: That small hatch in the last photo is only a vent.

I have circled the third door that all other airlines have on their A320 family aircraft.

They are only sign markings, I've saw more recent pics of N314US without them.

I've saw these markings on another airline but I can't remember now...

Probably it's the APU intake or a vent.

Thank you Allan! And thank you also for having explained more clearly, with the picture, what I wrote on the thread start.

Virgin America A320-200 1/500

Here's the first of two A320 customs I've finished today, a Virgin America A320-200, reg, N627VA, 2006 colors, named "Air Colbert", 1/500 scale. Altough a quite simple livery I had my share of hard work, I had hand paint some parts of the fin and the winglets. I'm very happy with the results. VA received it's airplanes in 2006 but only started operations on 2007.

Virgin America A320-200 Victoria's Secret 1/500

This one is the second A320 for today, a Virgin America A320-200, reg. N627VA, 2006 colors, with "Victoria's Secret - Here Come The Angels" titles, named "Runway Angel", 1/500 scale. I've made this one specially for Birthday gift of my step daughter, she loves the Victoria's Secrets Angels and every year she attends to the TV show. She once asked me to make this plane years ago, now that this could be possible I've prepared a surprise for her...I'm really eager to see her face once she opens the box!!!:envy:;)

Edit: on November 12th 2007 this plane carried the Angels from NY to Los Angeles, hence the special stickers.

United Airlines 737-800WL Eco Skies 1/500

This one I've finished yesterday at evening, here's a United Airlines 737-800WL, reg. N76516, 2010 colors, with "Eco Skies - Commitment to the Environment" stickers, 1/500 scale. I must confess I didn't accepted the fact that the Continental name disappeared from the skies, so till now I never added a single UA post merger colors to my collection. But now I'm becoming to change my mind, this one will be the first of many. I like very much the contrast of the green winglets with the basic CO/UA livery. This plane once had a test flight with biofuel in 2009.
