has anyone gotten "bad luck" from buying a model of a crashed plane?

Hi wings900 users,

I saw a model of an aircraft that I always wanted and there was two that are for the same price and both of the aircraft look exactly the same and are the same aircraft, but the difference is their registration and the fact that one crashed in real life while the other survived and had a regular career. I'm not big on superstition but part of my family is, eitherway out of curiosity I was curious if anyone had actually ever had bad experiences or bad luck after buying a model of an aircraft that crashed in realife?

PS: (hopefully not a stupid question but just curious)

kind regards
matt

I've owned the Egyptair A320 SU-GCC model but never had any bad luck from it

Re: has anyone gotten "bad luck" from buying a model of a crashed plane?

I have models of 3 crashed planes and I'm really happy to have them.
- Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-412 reg. 9V-SPK "Tropical" (starjets SJSIA037),
- National Airlines Boeing 747-428BCFN reg. TF-NAD/949CA “Lori” (herpa 518819),
- Egyptair A320-232 reg. SU-GCC (herpa 526814).

They all are wonderful though a bit sad items.
RIP to the victims

Re: has anyone gotten "bad luck" from buying a model of a crashed plane?

wow! you have a National Airlines Boeing 747-428BCFN! I was trying to look for that herpa model but its hard to find or their all out of stock...

funny enough the singapore airlines 9V-SPK by star jets is the plane I was talking about. I'm thinking that the model is more rare because of its history and the crash, but I might be wrong as its sister which is 9V-SPL, star jets has a font under the belly of the model that said "1 of 1000 pieces" which seems there's only 1000 made of 9V-SPL. the model of 9V-SPK doesn't have that font under the belly of the model. so it seems like 9V-SPL might be the hard one to get. unfortunately I cant find a website that lists starjets models and their numbers made. it would be helpful though.

eitherway I mean as long as the model isn't made from the actual plane itself, I guess your more on the safe side of saying there's no bad luck in getting the model? seen as two out of three say you had no bad experiences from crashed plane models?

About Singapore Airlines B747-400 "Tropical" Herpa decided not to produce it because of respect regarding the 83 victims of the flight 006.
I remember there have been a debate about the decision not to produce models linked with incident/tragedies.

yea I did see that forum about whether its respectful to have a model of a crashed aircraft or if its disrespectful, in this case because there's was already a forum about that I was trying to find out about the more superstitious side or coincidental side of buying a model of a crashed aircraft. and finding out if anyone had the so called "bad luck".

I know I am a little late (in vacation weathering the heat wave in BCN, and trying to see some aircraft in a watching spot in the base of runway 25R... without much success).

Personally I don't think it brings you bad luck owning the model, I do not own any of the model mention (I wasn't aware that National "Lori" was the aircraft involve in the accident in Afghanistan, thankfully I have Ed) but I have made in the past models of vehicles that were involve in tragedies (the R.M.S. Titanic for example) and, depends of point of view, might find troublesome to have the model that I own of a 1/200 B-17G (and also I wouldn't mind if I own b-29 "Enola gay" or "Bocks Car" in that scale), and I think I can say I have not have a "bad luck" live all these years. I know this might be very varied answer depending of many factor, but personally in this kind and of things (and I am trying to be very vague here on purpose) intend of why your owning the model might be a crucial factor.

Also, I might be stearing a little off topic, but personally I would not go out of my way to own any of the models mention if I have an option of alternative model more out of respect of the victims and if I have previous knowledge (I once almost bought the Egypt air a320 and National Lori 747, but lost the bidding on ebay) and I understand any of the company not making or stop producing that specific tail number, but at the same time if I had own them probably after knowing the real life airplane story I would not have sell it if I do not have an alternative.

I probably would go out of my way if they produces some of the aircraft involve in "Miracles" accident, like the Gimly glider or Miracle of the Hudson airplanes for example.

As far as I know they didnt produce as SIA didnt allow it anymore and all possible models already released were bought / sent back to SIA. Same was for PR material like postcards etc.

in that case with respect to the victims, I rather just get Singapore airlines 9V-SPL then I guess, plus it seems like its more of a rarity since the belly of the aircraft model saids "1 of 1000 pieces"
