Neglected, forgotten but hopefully revivable – Herpa's ignored 1:500-scale aircraft

Over the past 15 years Herpa built or acquired an unmatched variety of aircraft-moulds. But the claim to portray the present and past of the world of aviation in 1:500-scale has suffered lately.

This thread is meant to commemorate of all the aircraft, Herpa disregarded in the past (at least 3) years and bring in mind, that the charm of 1:500 aircraft modelling lies beyond just Airbus- and Boeing- widebodies (the sky500 repertoire).

Following a list of all the aircraft, Herpa past over since 2002:

1. CRJ-100 (2002; Air Littoral 513234)

2. Bae 146-100 (01-02/2004; National Jet Systems 509671)

3. ATR-42 (01-02/2005;Lufthansa Regional 516044)

4. DC-9-10 (03-04/2005;TWA 514446)

5. Boeing 737-600 (11-12/2005;Lauda Air 505642)

7. Boeing 737-500 (01-02/2006,Air Baltic 505659)

8. MD-90 (07-08/2006;Delta Airlines 507776)

9. CRJ-200 (09-10/2006; J-Air 505147)

10. Viscount (01-02/2007;Bea 510738)

11. Boeing 717 (05-06/2007;Midwest Airlines 504324)

12. Ju-52 (07-08/2007;Lufthansa D-AQUI 516709)

15. DC-4 (07/08/2008;Blue Angels 502092)

16. Boeing 377 Stratocruiser (11-12/2008; BOAC 506984)

17. Bae 146-200 (HWC 2008 (2-2009); Titan Airways 509725)

18. L-1011-385-3-500 (HWC 2/2009;TAAG 505048)

19. Bae 146-300 (03-04/2009; Lufthansa Regional 509732)

20. Tu-204-100 (07-08/2010;Cubana 515788)

21. Boeing 737-400 (09-10/2010;LOT 517706)

22. DC-6 (HES 10/2010;Pan American Clipper Berlin 517379)

23. DH 106 Comet 4 (11-12/2010;Mexicana 517768)

24. Il-62 (05-06/2011;Russian State Transport Company 518345)

25. SE-210 Caravelle (07-08/2011;Air Inter 520690)

26. Shorts 360 (07-08/2011;QuantasLink 523110)

27. Boeing 767-400 (07-08/2011;United 520812)

28. DC-8-73 (HES 10/2011;German Cargo 518673)

I would be very grateful for every post (comment, wish, picture), that could encourage Herpa, to revive at least some of these lost treasures.

Re: Neglected, forgotten but hopefully revivable – Herpas ignored 1:500-scale aircraf

I'd prefer them to use the IF500 Comet 4 for any future releases as the Herpa fuselage is too short.

Any of the others would be very welcome, even if only done as eXtra or club releases.

Re: Neglected, forgotten but hopefully revivable – Herpas ignored 1:500-scale aircraf

Thanks for putting this together. I think it's just a symptom of Herpa's focus on current and new models, where they seem to see a bigger market. Most of the models you listed are historic or being phased out in real life.

Re-ordered by type:

1. CRJ-100 (2002; Air Littoral 513234)

9. CRJ-200 (09-10/2006; J-Air 505147)

Not to mention of course the many aircraft that Herpa have never attempted in 1:500 scale, but you don't want to here me rant on again about that now, do you!

I think that there are 3 more to add to the list:

Fokker 100
Fokker 70
and Fokker 50..

Personally I don't want to see Herpa releasing a DC-10 again before they have a better mould...

2. Bae 146-100 (01-02/2004; National Jet Systems 509671) There is no mould for this, the incorrect mould is Bae 146-300, last release 2010

3. ATR-42 (01-02/2005;Lufthansa Regional 516044) Hogan factory..

4. DC-9-10 (03-04/2005;TWA 514446)

5. Boeing 737-600 (11-12/2005;Lauda Air 505642)

6. DC-8-61 (Advent Calendar 2005;United 514941) would love to see that!

7. Boeing 737-500 (01-02/2006,Air Baltic 505659) Would be nice!

8. MD-90 (07-08/2006;Delta Airlines 507776) Is in the club vote of this year so they are at least considering it

9. CRJ-200 (09-10/2006; J-Air 505147) Herpa told me that This will not be revived, I would rather prefer the Jet-X/IF500-mould - it should be in the JC Wings factory shouldn't it? Would love to see that mould to be used again.

10. Viscount (01-02/2007;Bea 510738) I'd prefer the IF500-mould

11. Boeing 717 (05-06/2007;Midwest Airlines 504324) This is a great mould!!! So many planes to do!

12. Ju-52 (07-08/2007;Lufthansa D-AQUI 516709)

13. ATR-72 (09-10/2007;Olympic Airlines 508070) Hogan factory...?

14. DC-10 (HWS 11/2007;Lufthansa 516211) I hope Herpa can at least gain access to the ex-IF500 mould as this one is so ugly. I heard a new DC-10 is 'under consideration' by Herpa but the mould is unknown.

15. DC-4 (07/08/2008;Blue Angels 502092) This would be nice too!

16. Boeing 377 Stratocruiser (11-12/2008; BOAC 506984)

17. Bae 146-200 (HWC 2008 (2-2009); Titan Airways 509725) I'd love to see a correct mould!

18. L-1011-385-3-500 (HWC 2/2009;TAAG 505048)
Herpa is using IF500?

19. Bae 146-300 (03-04/2009; Lufthansa Regional 509732) My favorite plane, but I'd love a better mould...

20. Tu-204-100 (07-08/2010;Cubana 515788) Same mould as TU-214 which is still in use (Transaero)

21. Boeing 737-400 (09-10/2010;LOT 517706)

22. DC-6 (HES 10/2010;Pan American Clipper Berlin 517379) Same as DC-4, nice mould with many interesting possible liveries

23. DH 106 Comet 4 (11-12/2010;Mexicana 517768) IF500 is better

24. Il-62 (05-06/2011;Russian State Transport Company 518345) may be coming again with the resurrection of russian airframes this year

25. SE-210 Caravelle (07-08/2011;Air Inter 520690) Either this one or the IF500 would be great!

26. Shorts 360 (07-08/2011;QuantasLink 523110) strange mould, almost never used...

27. Boeing 767-400 (07-08/2011;United 520812)

28. DC-8-73 (HES 10/2011;German Cargo 518673) Many interesting liveries (pax&cargo) to be done

I would be very grateful for every post (comment, wish, picture), that could encourage Herpa, to revive at least some of these lost treasures.
Many thanks for your research with the last release date, I may include it in my mould list!

Re: Neglected, forgotten but hopefully revivable – Herpas ignored 1:500-scale aircraf

I wholeheartedly agree. A good many of those moulds are terrific and sadly go underappreciated. All we see today from herpa are A320s/A330s, Boeing 737s/767s/787s.

I'd be careful though. A lot of those moulds are nearing the two decade mark. The DC-10 for instance is only a rough conversion from the OG model which has been around since herpa founded the "wings" series back in 1992!

The BAe 146/Avro RJ mould is especially bad, mostly since herpa the stretched -300/RJ100 mould for ALL others. I'd really like to see herpa make a true RJ/BAE replacement with all three versions. Probably not gonna happen though.

The CRJ-100/200 is also pretty archaic. First seen in 1998. We'd be handing it it's drivers license in most countries this year if it were a kid. The ATRs and the Viscount also date back to the OG era, and all still have the "scaled" gear, rather than true NG landing gear.

The rest in that list are all good. They are all true NGs and rather nice. The DC-9-10/20 in particular is gorgeous. I miss that one a lot. Only four models ever made with it. The stretched DC-8s are among my favorite aircraft of all time. Sadly, they fair no better.

Going back to the Regional Jets I mentioned. I see no reason for them to be renewed. Well, yes CRJ-100/200s and BAe/Avros are being retired left and right, they still remain common sights across airports around the world. The ATR is experiencing a Renaissance. Aerospatiale has hundreds on the order books. No reason we can't see a new mould of that.

I'm guessing there's a better profit margin on wide-bodies and the super-common narrowbodies like the A320/737 families. Hence herpa has ignored regional aircraft with the possible exception of the E-Jets.

But yea, sign me on for a revival of the above.

What a shame, 7 years without ATR.
About the DC-10, I would prefer the Aero500 over the IF500 mould!

Re: Neglected, forgotten but hopefully revivable – Herpas ignored 1:500-scale aircraf

Thank you all for your replies.

Anglojet: I think the fuselage length of the Herpa Comet 4 (BOAC) is correct. The Comet 4 B (IF500) had a longer fuselage and a shorter wingspan.

mmu69: Your re-ordering makes it easier to find a particular aircraft. Why Herpa thinks that the 1:500-model collector is likely to narrow down on contemporaneous widebodies is their secret. They apparently don't judge the 1:200-model collector that way.

Devon Chris: True new moulds (not the kind of the new Air Force One) are always welcome. But I also liked to see renewed moulds of the aircrafts that are phased out in Europe and North America, but still are workhorses in the so called third world.

DutchCollector: Sorry, I forgot the Dutch!

Eurojet: Thanks for your many comments and helpful remarks. I disagree only on the moulds of DC4 and DC6, they are completely different. I would love to see renewed Fokker moulds too!!!

Leonardo Mello: We can only hope that the tools for Herpa DC-10 mould are worn out and that Herpa reverts to the tools of the IF500-mould (with better scaled gears though).

But yea, sign me on for a revival of the above.
You're absolutely right that the quality of most of the regional jets is not on a par with the bulk of Herpas wide-bodies (though there are pretty week moulds here too). But I disagree that they are not worth a rework. If there is a market for "not super-common" narrow-bodies in 1:400, why should we take a different view about 1:500.

How big is the market for military aircraft in 1:500? I think Herpa has invested a lot of money in the development of their excellent military and also (historic) Russian 1:500 models and comparatively neglected the regional aircraft. And even the quality of the "super-common" A320 and 737-800 does not match their counterparts in 1:400.

Re: Neglected, forgotten but hopefully revivable – Herpas ignored 1:500-scale aircraf

I think they should have invested in new ATR, 146 and Fokker moulds and tooling instead of wasting it on things like the Galaxy and TU114, which can only have two or three livery variations at most.
