New SARS epidemic from China: airlines and airports.

Hello.
I think it is time to start a thread about this epidemic, the new SARS Coronavirus, unfortunately, deserves it.
About 180 dead and 8.000 infected, almost all in mainland China and Hong Kong.
Numbers are not sure, Hong Kong authorities said there could be 44.000 infected only in the State City...it is true that when there are these epidemic numbers change and with globalization it is difficult to check everyone moving from one part to another of the world.
SARS epidemic of 2007 was more deadly but less infectious: 800 dead with 5.000 infected, and we must say that China authorities of the year 2007 waited a very long time before to announce the emergency.
This time the contagion seems to came from the Chinese city of Wuhan, 11 millions inhabitants, it is not sure if the virus changed its RNA after passing from a snake or a bat (regularly eaten in China, along with cats and dogs...) to a human, but it is difficult to know the zero patient and how this virus infected a human coming from the animals.
Today this new virus is less deadly but much more infectious: less than 2.5% of dead.
What are airports and airlines doing to avoid a pandemic? Many: here in Rome, "Leonardo da Vinci" created a special "health corridor" for all the passengers arriving from mainland China and Hong Kong. Once at the gate, all the passengers are obliged to a check, temperature and eventual SARS related symptoms.
Italy is organizing the repatriation of the many Italian citizens working in China, some flight from FCO are deleted.
At the beginning, only China Southern Airlines to Wuhan was diverted to Canton, but now all Air China, Hainan Airlines, China Southern and China Eastern flights to Rome are checked and if necessary, because passengers with SARS-related symptoms on board, diverted.
Many airlines cancelled flights to China:
British Airways deleted flights to/from Beijing and Shanghai until the end of February while the airline did not cancel flights to/from Hong Kong.
Iberia deleted all flights to/from Shanghai until the end of February.
Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss deleted all flights to/from Beijing and Shanghai until February 9th.
SAS deleted all flights to/from Beijing and Shanghai until February 9th.
American Airlines deleted flights to/from Beijing and Shanghai until March 27th.
United Airlines deleted flights to/from Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong until February 8th.
Air Canada deleted all flights to/from Beijing and Shanghai until February 29th.
Hongkong Airlines deleted all flights to/from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanchino, Haikou, Sanya, Tientsin, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guiyang.
Finnair deleted all flights to/from Beijing and Nanchino until March 29th.
Lion Air deleted all flights to/from mainland China and Hong Kong until February 29th.
Air Seoul deleted all flights to/from Zhangjiajie e Liny.
Air India deleted all flights to/from Shanghai until February 14th.
IndiGo deleted all flights to/from Changdu and Hong Kong until February 20th.

A Kalitta Air B747-400F has been used for the repatriation of about 200 USA citizens from Wuhan. All the passengers of flight K4371 landed at Riverside March Air Reserve Base, California, for check and quarantine.

At Civitavecchia Port, close to Rome, Costa Smeralda cruise ship is in quarantine with all the 6.000 people on board, because two Chinese citizens coming from Macao seems to have SARS related symptoms.

First two infected here in Rome: two Chinese tourists arriving from Wuhan landed on January 23rd at Milan Malpensa and then arrived in Rome.
They were staying at Palatino Hotel, the symptoms started two days ago but the two Chinese have been quarantined only yesterday.
The floor of their room has ben closed but many other tourists of the hotel abandoned it during the night coming back to their countries or going in other hotels of Rome and this is a serious problem, especially if they have been infected.

In the meanwhile Alitalia blocked (too late as usual) all flights to/from China until April 28th:
early this morning last two Air China flights from Beijing and Shanghai landed at Milan Malpensa, while Air China A330 from Hanghzou, Hainan Airlines A330 from Chongqing and China Southern B787 Guanghzou landed at Rome Fiumicino from 5 am to 6.30 am.
All passengers have been checked.
Italy is one of the countries with the largest Chinese community.

The two Chinese tourist on board of Costa Smeralda seem negative to SARS; the 6.000 people on board can restart to breath normally...

Too late!
You have two tourists infected by SARS in an hotel in the city centre and allow to a great part of other tourists staying in the hotel to go away?
Now who will check them if they are returning to their country or if they are continuing the journey in other hotels?
The two Chinese tourists arrived on January 23rd, six days of incubation, on 29th/30th the patology was full-blown: they had all the time to infect many other people sneezing, coughing, with droplets or just breathing!
So in my opinion the mistake was to continue to allow flights from China until yesterday: on January 23rd the infection was already spreading, all the flights had to be blocked before.

In fact, a news of few minutes ago: Italian Government declared the SARS a National Emergency for 6 months.
On February 2nd, maybe, an airplane will land at Wuhan to repatriate the Italian citizens blocked there.

An Italian Air Force KC767 departed from Pratica di Mare military base arriving at Wuhan for the repatriation of the Italian Citizens (about 80); tomorrow morning it should land at Rome Pratica di Mare, then the 80 citizens will be quarantined at Cecchignola military base.

At Rome "Leonardo Da Vinci" a thermal scanner is working: for all the flights landing at Rome FCO, from all over the world and not only China, all the passengers must walk along eleven "health corridors" and their temperature will be checked with thermal scanner.
If there are passengers with temperature over 37,5 °C they are isolated, checked for Coronavirus and, eventually, quarantined.

Italy is the third country in the world after China and South Korea for Covid-19 infected (220 people) and dead (5 people).
An Alitalia airplane, departed Rome FCO Sunday evening and landed at Mauritius today morning has been blocked at the airport with 300 passengers on board; among them 70 Italiand coming from the regions where the virus is more present, so the authorities of Port Louis asked Italian passengers to stay in quarantine for a week or to immediately go back to Italy.
It seems 40 passengers decided for the return in Italy.

Even Seychelles and Giordania closed the borders to Italian citizens and flights from Italy.
The world is becoming crazy: the craziest news is that Romania closed the borders to Italians!
Romania! A country saved by Italian money and, in exchange, in about 20 years Romania opened and emptied its prisons invading Italy with the worst scum of the planet, starting an infinite chain of rapes, murders, robberies, filling Italy with gypsies and homeless people (for the happiness of our shameful, disgusting post-communist politicians), and now closes the borders and flights to/from Italy (the same of Albania in the years 1990's)!
Really incredible.
We are searching for the "zero patient": our shameful, disgusting communist politicians governing Italy without elections, did not put in quarantine 2.500 Chinese citizens coming back to Italy from China (Wuhan included) because "sign of racism", while quarantined all the Italians repatriated from Wuhan.
This is crazy, these disgusting post-communist are crazy!

Being a Brussels Airlines frequent flyer (and Miles & More), this is the message i received today:

<table class="bloc-header" style="margin: 0 auto;" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" align="center"> <tbody> <tr> <td class="header">http://news.brusselsairlines.com/ima...NG_600x200.jpg</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <table class="bloc-inspiration-box three-boxes" style="background: rgb(255,255,255);border-radius: 5.0px 5.0px 0 0;margin: 0 auto;" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" align="center"> <tbody> <tr> <td class="title" style="color: rgb(59,59,59);font-family: Montserrat , Arial , Helvetica , sans-serif;font-size: 14.0px;line-height: 22.0px;mso-line-height-rule: exactly;padding: 34.0px 15.0px 26.0px;text-align: justify;font-weight: 100;">Dear customer,

These days we are facing unprecedented circumstances, causing uncertainty amongst travellers around the world. Since the outbreak of the new coronavirus, we have been monitoring the situation hourly and we have evaluated all possible scenarios. Our priorities are clear: we want to be the most reliable airline towards you, be the best possible employer, and make sure we come back stronger after this crisis. That is why we have taken the difficult decision to suspend our operations between 20 March and 19 April included.

Also in difficult times, our customers will continue to be at the core of our activities. We cannot emphasize enough how sorry we are for the cancelled flights due to the corona outbreak. If you would decide to postpone your trip to a later time, even if your flight is not cancelled, we fully understand. We will assist you by extending our flexibility so you don’t have to wait on the phone right now.

All passengers with a ticket booked before or on 31 March (with flights until 31 December – whether cancelled or not) can rebook their ticket until 31 August, to another travel date until 1 year after your original ticket purchase (or until 31 December 2020 whichever comes first). Furthermore, if you would like, you can also modify the origin and/or destination of your ticket. If you are interested in this possibility, there’s nothing you need to do right now. Simply contact us before 31 August, when you have decided when you want to fly again. This way you can reschedule worry-free, without time pressure.

You can find all recent updates and information on brusselsairlines.com, as well as the most frequently asked questions. In case we have new information, this will immediately be added on our website. Please make sure to visit brusselsairlines.com before contacting our customer service, to avoid extra waiting times.

Finally, we would like to thank you for your trust in these challenging times. The health and safety of you and your loved ones always remain our highest priority, and we will never compromise on this commitment. We really appreciate your support and hope to welcome you on board again soon.</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <table class="bloc-inspiration-box three-boxes" style="background: rgb(255,255,255);border-radius: 5.0px 5.0px 0 0;margin: 0 auto;" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" align="center"> <tbody> <tr> <td> <table class="cta" style="background: rgb(239,64,35);border-radius: 5.0px;" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" align="center"> <tbody> <tr> <td class="label" style="color: rgb(255,255,255);font-family: Montserrat , Arial , Helvetica , sans-serif;font-size: 16.0px;font-weight: 500;line-height: 22.0px;mso-line-height-rule: exactly;padding: 10.0px 16.0px;text-align: center;">More info</td> </tr> </tbody> </table></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <table class="bloc-inspiration-box three-boxes" style="background: rgb(255,255,255);border-radius: 5.0px 5.0px 0 0;margin: 0 auto;" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" align="center"><tbody><tr> <td class="title" style="color: rgb(59,59,59);font-family: Montserrat , Arial , Helvetica , sans-serif;font-size: 14.0px;line-height: 22.0px;mso-line-height-rule: exactly;padding: 34.0px 15.0px 26.0px;text-align: left;font-weight: 100;">Kind regards, </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="title" style="color: rgb(59,59,59);font-family: Montserrat , Arial , Helvetica , sans-serif;font-size: 14.0px;line-height: 22.0px;mso-line-height-rule: exactly;padding: 14.0px 15.0px 26.0px;text-align: left;font-weight: 100;">Dieter Vranckx</td></tr></tbody></table><table class="bloc-logo-ribbon" style="background: rgb(255,255,255);border-radius: 5.0px 5.0px 0 0;margin: 0 auto;" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" align="center"><tbody><tr><td class="left logo" style="padding: 10.0px 15.0px;" align="left">http://news.brusselsairlines.com/ima...o-153x20-2.png</td> <td class="right logo" style="padding: 10.0px 15.0px;" align="right">http://news.brusselsairlines.com/ima...go-correct.png</td> </tr> </tbody> </table>

Re: New SARS epidemic from China: airlines and airports.

And this is a message i received from Lufthansa:

<table class="w280_m" style="mso-cellspacing: 0;mso-padding-alt: 0;" role="presentation" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" align="left"><tbody><tr><td class="fs22_m lh26_m" style="color: rgb(7,29,73);font-family: Arial , Helvetica , sans-serif;font-size: 28.0px;line-height: 32.0px;font-weight: normal;mso-line-height-rule: exactly;" valign="top" align="left">

The aviation industry is facing unprecedented difficulties, which is why we have had to continually reduce our flights over the past few weeks. I am aware that in the end we were not always able to offer you the level of service you have come to expect from us. I sincerely apologize for this.

Onboard safety
As our valued customer, you trust us to take you to your destination responsibly and safely. Under the current circumstances, we are more aware than ever before how important it is to be a travel partner that you can rely on. Please rest assured that even in these uncertain times, your safety and well-being remain our top priority. The air in our aircraft cabins is a mixture of fresh air and circulating air that has been filtered. The use of special filters means that the cabin air is actually cleaner than the air we breathe down on earth. In addition, our aircraft cleaning methods meet the highest standards and we are continually reviewing our onboard service to make sure it meets the latest recommendations in hygiene and in order to make changes if necessary.

Repatriation flights
Due to the many increased travel restrictions in Europe as well as beyond the European borders, we will only be able to offer a minimal number of flights in the next few weeks. At the moment, we are doing everything we can to bring thousands of people back home who are stranded abroad due to local travel limitations. These past few days we have already carried out numerous repatriation flights and are planning many additional ones in cooperation with respective governments. If you are currently still abroad and would like to come home, please contact your local embassies or foreign offices as quickly as possible.

Flexible rebooking options
In these uncertain times, we would like to help our customers by expanding our rebooking options and making them more flexible. You may keep your ticket for a cancelled or future flight without the need to immediately decide on an alternative date for a new flight. The value of your ticket will not expire and you will even get a discount of 50 Euro on your rebooking. You may also rebook to a different destination. This applies to tickets booked through March 31, 2020 and which have a confirmed travel date of no later than December 31, 2020.

If you wish to rebook your flight, you may wait until after your originally scheduled flight date to contact the Lufthansa Group customer service or your travel agent. It is not necessary to contact customer service or a travel agent prior to the original flight date. Please take note that different guidelines apply to Eurowings. You may find further information anytime on our airline websites.

Increased waiting times
Due to the high volume of incoming calls, waiting times at our call centers are longer than usual, and I kindly ask for your patience. I also ask for your understanding that at this time it is our priority to take care of customers with time-sensitive travel needs.

Frequent fliers
We are aware that opportunities to earn status miles are currently limited. Over the course of this year, we will offer accommodating solutions for maintaining your status.

In this crisis, the world is facing a challenge that can only be met if we all work together. Along with the entire staff of the Lufthansa Group, we will do everything we can to take you safely to your destination because you, our customer, remain the focus of all our efforts. Please rest assured that we, the 130,000 employees of the Lufthansa Group, are doing everything in our power to support you in these difficult times.

Thank you for placing your trust in us.

Wishing you all the best, stay healthy and take care of yourself.

The german air Bridge is apparently the biggest "Refugee/Repatriation Action" since WWII for Germany.

AIDA had 3 ships in the area, TUI / Mein Schiff I think 1 or 2. Other Brands were there as well, e.g. P&O Cruises and Thomson. But think UK Repatriates via BA.

Repatriation flight LH9902 currently on its way from HND to Auckland to evacuate german and other european citizens. Whatever bad this crisis brings, it also brings in also some variety and surprises for spotters all over the globe.

Yup, you see many interesting Things like this today. We had an Air Europa 787 flying FRA-Caribbean and back and if you check now for example for Lima, you will see DLH, ACA and AUA going there with repat flights. Last week there were I think 3 or 4 El Al 787's flying out of Lima back to TLV. Poor airline of Course wasnt allowed flying over Africa but had to detour via the Med. Ugly, that this still prevails during such Crisis times….childish and immature.

Good thing they got those 787s!

We'll be getting 2 weekly United 777-300ERs or 787-10s on all 5 of their destinations from AMS, operating cargo flights. Tomorrow 3 of 'em will be at AMS simultaneously!
