Air Berlin, worse than Alitalia?

Air Berlin yesterday released their financial report of 2016. And guess what? It's worse than Alitalia's with a loss at nearly 782 Million Euros (781,9 to be exact). That marks a loss of 2.14 Million Euros per day, nearly 90.000 Euros per hour and 1487 Euros per minute.

Congrats Air Berlin, you're now worse than Alitalia at burning money!

New CEO Winkelmann said that the wet-lease to Lufthansa will be managed by a newly founded company, the Air Berlin Aeronautics GmBH. This makes a takeover by Lufthansa more likely but it looks like LH is only interested in the profitable part of Air Berlin. A lot of media yesterday reported that Carsten Spohr, CEO of LH, will meet with Etihad next week to discuss the future of Air Berlin and a potential buyout. It's unlikely that the German government is interested in a failure of Air Berlin during the elections, which may lead to a takeover of Air Berlin with permission by the government and the finance minister.
If that's not going to happen, Winkelmann said they are taking a look at possible candidates for a takeover, including Easyjet (which was nearly completed last year) or Asian airlines and companies.

If Air Berlin somehow survives this year, the financial report for this year will most likely be even worse, as Air Berlin has already reported a loss of nearly 300 Million € for the first quarter of this year.

Re: Air Berlin, worse than Alitalia?

To lose that much money, something is wrong, and it should be obvious. Just my opinion.

And I just bought an Air Berlin A330 model last year.
Hope they still stick around!

Re: Air Berlin, worse than Alitalia?

Lufthansa is currently planning taking over Air Berlin completely but first Etihad has to solve the immense debt problem of the airline.

A german newspaper says that Delta and Hainan Airlines are also interested in Air Berlin.

Only have found a german news article about it, maybe the english press will release something too.

Re: Air Berlin, worse than Alitalia?

The consolidation that is taking place is honestly quite sad. Competition improves service, and as airlines are picked up by larger corporations, consolidating into- I don't know maybe five big companies at most? We will end up in a world with no choices... There needs to be more regulation on this kind of thing!

Re: Air Berlin, worse than Alitalia?

In the last few days Air Berlin reported a loss of nearly 300 million Euros during the first quarter of 2017, making it a 3 million Euro loss per day. To say it with Donald Trumps best words: So sad!
