Mannheim-Hamburg-Stuttgart (and return)

Maybe a couple of you guys already read about my huge trip across the USA in 2009. Two weeks ago I started the first planespotting journey in 2010. Not that big but I hope its ok for you
I always wished to fly on a Dornier 328 and Fokker 70/100. These birds getting rare in the future and before every airline put this type out of their fleet I had to fly with them. Thats the reason!

The Dornier 328 is not very popular and only a handful of airlines still operate this plane. The small German Cirrus Airline (partner of Lufthansa) use this plane on many regional routes across the country. The city of Mannheim is not far away from my home so I decided to booked a flight to Hamburg for 99 Euro. The problem on these special offers is that you have to make a night stop at your final destination. Contact Air (also a partner of LH) offers flights with the Fokker100 from Hamburg to Stuttgart so I booked a 99 Euro flight to Stuttgart where I stayed for one night before I returned to Mannheim via Hamburg on the next day.

A couple of weeks later I got an information from LH that the aircraft was switched from Fokker 100 to Boeing 737-500. Oh great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I already tried to fly on a VLM Fokker 50 two years ago but they switched the type as well..... to a boring RJ85.
Will I ever get the chance to fly on a Fokker aircraft???????? I guess not
Ok the flights were booked. No chance to switch the type so lets start:

21. March 2010

MHG - HAM (17:20 - 18:40)
Cirrus Airlines/C91574
Dornier Do328/D-CPRW

HAM - STR (20:30 - 21:40)
Lufthansa/LH0152
Boeing 737-500/D-ACJI "Siegburg"

I used my car to get to Mannheim and 1,5 hours later I arrived at this very very very tiny airport. Two scheduled flights to Hamburg and Berlin/Tegel are the only commercial flights out of this city. But the big advantage. Parking is for free and the distance between your car and the plane is very short.

Main entrance of MHG. Made this picture out of my car so I hope you can imagine how short the distances are :-)

Cirrus/LH check in area. A total of two counters!

The old tower of MHG.

Overview of the apron, tower and terminal

First Do328 pulled out of the hangar for the flight to Berlin

Next Do328 pulled out for the flight to Hamburg (my one)

Do228 parked on the apron.

Ready to enter my plane to EDDH

View of the cabin. I've got something to drink and some peanuts. Crew was very friendly. Only 12 people were onboard.

The Take Off in Mannheim is very spectacular cause of the very short RWY. Full thrust while the parking breaks are still set.

EDDH final approach. Landing was very rough.

I had not much time in Hamburg. I walked a little bit through the Terminal before I boarded my flight to Stuttgart.

22. March 2010

STR - HAM (10:45 - 12:00)
Lufthansa/LH0141
Boeing 737-500/D-ACJI "Siegburg"

HAM - MHG (19:10 - 20:30)
Cirrus Airlines/C91575
Dornier Do328/D-CPRW

I stayed at the Mövenpick Messe Hotel a five minute foot walk away from the terminal. Stuttgart was very busy that day with many charter flights, especially to Turkey. Benztown (as some people say) has a vistior terrace but 2,5 Euro entrance fee, 1 hour left and the sun infront of your face doesn't make it worth a visit to get good pictures.

Check in aera of terminal 3 with the Delta Airl. counter to the right hand.

Air Baltic Fokker 50 (sad memories came up)

There are still plenty of people who visit this poor country

This is how Mr. Celsius looks.

No its not Denver! Its Hamburg! And this A320 didn't land in Fuhlsbüttel. He returned to Finkenwerder.

Goodbye Orka Ozzie!!!!

Final approach on Finkenwerder. Not Fuhlsbüttel!

If you don't mind me asking, but what are the bad memories? - I have had a look on the internet at F.50 accidents, and none came up.

Excellent photo's, I love the airport overview of Hamburg, the AB's and LH's look great !!
