Re: Database & MyCollection - What do you want to see?

Last call for suggestions/ideas. We are closing the books on development ideas from W900 very shortly.

Re: Database & MyCollection - What do you want to see?

Three more thoughts Todd.
1. Can you make it so that when you have more than one model of the same id number, that the models appear consecutively? At the moment, they are often separated by other models from the same manufacturer. This would make it easier to keep track of which models you have duplicates of.

2. The wish list function. I am not sure what this does other than allow members to log the models they would like to see manufactured. This is actually a great idea but only if the information can be *****sed by the manufacturers themselves. Perhaps this data might be able to be collated like the polls on the forums or collected into a link on the website that can be publicly accessed. I assume at the moment that there is something that allows a members wishlist to be viewed along with their signature. Interesting but not likely to see manufacturers pay attention.

3. I am still finding lots of good features around the site - mostly by good luck or hit & miss. It may be useful to have a walk-through tour of the site for new members explaining how the features all work, especially with the update. For instance, I have only recently started using the "Todays Post" drop-down from Quick Links. This works MUCH better than the New Posts drop-down, especially since notification of new posts from subscribed threads seems hit or miss at best.

Hope these ideas are useful. (Also, from the conspicuous absence of reply re pics of custom models, can I assume that this may be too difficult?)

Re: Database & MyCollection - What do you want to see?

Thanks Doc! I had no idea there was a "Today's Posts" link - very useful.

You will have the ability to sort on 4 criteria, which should clear this up.

Certain manufacturers were given special report pages to get a list of models that users are interested in.

That has been a To-Do for a LONG time. We have a system in place to store this kind of info, but the time to write it hasn't been found. We do need to write a manual of sorts, instructions, tips, etc. We'll take volunteers if anyone is interested.

Custom pics (most likely 1 per model) is being considered, pending time contraints for this release of our software.

Re: Database & MyCollection - What do you want to see?

Amazing how a time deadline makes the grey matter spark up. One more thought - can the wanted list be somehow constructed similarly to eBay's favorite searches, where if a model on your wanted list is posted for sale/exchange by another member that an email notification is automatically sent? I don't really know if this would be feasible - just a thought.

Re: Database & MyCollection - What do you want to see?

I have an idea that may make things easier. You know when you have a database of music like itunes, or something similar you have a small search box at the top that allows you to search for a track or artist with out having to go through every track or so. I thought that might be a good idea for the "My Collection" side of things. For example, if you want to see how many Lufthansa models you have you could type Lufthansa in the search box to see what pops up.

Paul, that is a GREAT idea! Instead of having to load your whole database, you could see at a glance, say your BA fleet or your DC-6's or your Gemini Jets. I wholeheartedly support this one.

When you check the for sale/trade checkbox when adding or modifying a model, members who havs the model on their wishlist is sent an email - on condition that both parties have have set their preferences to send and accept emails and that the models are "public"

Email notifications are on the to do list, it would be a weekly round-up email telling you what is available.

Noted, possible we can add this depending on the effort involved.

Re: Database & MyCollection - What do you want to see?

One more suggestion that may or may not be feasible.

How about including a new field when adding a model to your collection where the shipping cost can be captured? I know, what's the sense of populating yet another table with more cost related data. But by adding this field to the model entry form, we may actually get a more accurate cost input for the model, since the user would be prompted to separate the two instead of just including it in the overall cost.

Also... for those of us faithful enough to put the correct shipping costs in this area - it would give us a good snapshot of what we're paying in shipping costs.

Just another suggestion...

Keep up the great work guys!
Mark

This is on the to-do list and is partially coded. The data will be for your usage only and will not be captured in any reporting or graphs.
