[project] Allama Iqbal International Airport - Lahore Model
Hi Everyone,
Im new to model Airport building but it's been something i've wanted to do for a while.
My Project is to rebuild a model of Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore - Pakistan. As shown below
I couldn't find plans for it anywhere, so i stole some from my friend "google earth". Below:
I have bought a Gemni Jets terminal and ground foil from hobbyco, Sydney ( i live in australia) for $475, $325 for terminal and $150 for the foil. Now i know what you guys are gonna say. The Gemni jet terminal looks nothing like AIIA as above. Thing is i didnt plan on modelling AIIA. But after i bought it i was sorta put of by the fact that the terminal sits in the middle and there's no roads coming to the terminal. There's a skytrain on the roof but it connects to nothing. To me im like how do people get to the damn airport.so i've decided not to go with their design. I got some inspiration from airport diorama design website and wat they did with the gemni terminal and put a facade up the front. But instead of buying theirs i wanna build a higher quality terminal front myself. As i realise the back part of the terminal is pretty close to the design they have at AIIA.
As for the Foil, i think i have wasted that $150, and i might go with the airport diaorama desgins custom airport kit and design my own similar to the snapshot from google earth.
I've already got heaps of planes, a control tower. also got about 500 LED's at home. a few grain bulbs to make some flood lights (currently looking for some sort of mirror stickers to reflect light).
So hopefully with help from you guys i can do this. I know i'm probably gonna use balsa wood to make the front end model. Probably gonna need tips along the way.
Also i need a base. Im thinking plywood. Model will be approximately 3.5-4 m by 2m. Any idea's on what thickness would be good? remembering im going to have to put through led's on this. And idea's on the best way to suppourt the ply wood? I.e teach me how to create a table.
Thanks guys
Hope we can pull this through.
Atif

Good luck, would love to see how this works out. Plywood works OK, however it's not ideal for painting or for adhering cardstock to it. I would recommend either styrofoam insulation panels or MDF.

I recommend balsa because it's basicly cardstock but looks a ton better. Good luck with this, I look forward to seeing progress pics.

Re: [project] Allama Iqbal International Airport - Lahore Model
@ Peak Airways, I just want to use plywood as a base(table) for the airport, not for any modelling as such. However the MDF looks good now aswell. I just need some guidance, on the thickness I should use for my table, such that it will be able to support the wieght of my model. For the construction of my terminal I will most likely be using balsa wood, some clear perspex or transparent sheets for windows.
@Kris Air, I don't fully understand what you mean, whats the inner. And what are miny bricks, never heard of them before.
Thanks Guys much appreciated your input

Yeah, I was talking about the base. I was referring to the "ground" of your airport. When you want to do the ground markings you'll either want to paint or adhere some sort of "foil" to it. Plywood is kind of lousy for that. Good luck!

Re: [project] Allama Iqbal International Airport - Lahore Model
Hi Guys,
This is a quick sketchup i did, its really rough and not my final version. Im going to create a high quality one later. This was just a 30min quickie. Just to see how hard it would be to work with balsa so far its quite simple, might have trouble with hexagonal peices.
any positive critisicm welcome.
Night got work tomorro morning zzzz.
