struggling with runway widths for a 1/500 runway

I want to make a new airport layout but struggling as i can't, as none of my aircraft or anything are with me

I have decided against a canadian airport now, as they aren't very nice

I am going to make a British airport once again when the time comes

I just need to know what would be the best width and length of a runway if a A380 is to fly in and out of it .......

the airport will have its own Business port (like an LCY section) BUT can handle an A340-500 as SIA will use it for tis all business class fight form the airport.

i already devised my destinations and what airlines will use the airport..... if you wish to know this let me know

Re: I want to make a new airport layout

OK... you have jumped the bandwagon as they say. You should have an initial "vision" before you even embark on selecting airlines. Second: how much room do you have, unless you have a 31 foot room, in which you can have a scale runway (based on LHR's rwy) then that must be considered... lets not forget, the length of the runway is just "cosmetic"... and it would be silly to have a rwy of 31 foot, and terminals/aprons totalling 7 feet. I'm sure you get my jist. LOL

As for the size of a rwy to take the A380. I would use LHR's dimensions, length in reality is 12799ft, which in 1:400 scale reduces to a size of about 32ft... but I would shorten it RIGHT down to something like 7-9ft, and it runs along the airport, I prefer it this way IMO.
The width is around 157ft (or 4815cm) in 1:1 scale, at 1:400 scale, that size reduces to 0.39ft or 12.03cm. And there you have it, thats your realistic runway sizes. For ideas on the business sector... look on Google Earth (best tool for it IMO) at business airports, or airports which operate remote stands and apron parking, these offer great inspiration.

BTW: what destinations/airlines will operate from your aiport?
Good Luck Mate

Matt

Hello BAvsVA.

I've taken the privilege to edit your previous non-describing "thread title" to a more proper thread title, related to your content of your post.

Anyway......

None of the model airport makers does the entire runway length. A ½ runway or 1/3 of a runway would look quite alright. Unless you got a a big space for your model airport.
But if you want to calculate width of a runway, a 45meter wide runway = 45000/400 = 11.2 Centimeter. A standard INTERNATIONAL Airport take JFK "4R-22L" its widest runway is 61 meter wide. Take the same calculation with 61000/400= 15.25 cm. Now its up to you how long you want your runway to be. But remember, the width is important. Hope this helps.

EDIT: Corrected the 152.5 to 15.25 cm. Thanks Will for the observation.

.... I think you could add JFK to "LCY,LHR,LTN,LGW"... it is going to be an intercontinenal airport...

I believe you mean 15.25 cm wide, not 152.5.

Holy... That's correct. "Period" supposed to be before the "2". Big typo.

Re: I want to make a new airport layout

ah okay thanks

would length of a cross wing runway be like a meter then, I am intending on making 2 very long runways for the A380 to be able to use and then a cros wing runway for when small aircraft such as DHC-8-Q400 need a quick take off from the business port ?

Re: I want to make a new airport layout

As far as deciding which airlines a model airport will be catering to, do you keep all the planes from one airline at one terminal, or do you categorize the airport layout based on plane size? Would all Lufthansa's (747's, 737's, A320's, etc.) be at one terminal, or would the smaller planes be located at the same gates as smaller planes from other carriers?

Re: I want to make a new airport layout

Just a helping suggestion, but surely you should maybe start to plan/brainstorm your actual airport, and not just the operators... even thought thats the fun part. As of now.. this thread has had 200+ hits, and not a single design has been either shown/layed down etc.. (apart from the airlines). But hey, it's your airport, not mine.. mine is underway as we speak.

What size room/board do you have to work on?
Just out of interest, as you are being very ambitious.
