New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

Hello to all. I've started to sketch out a 10' x 6' model of the Orlando Executive Airport. This will be for the most part entirely scratch built. This will be my first attempt so I'm sure the learning curve will be there. I'm doing this primarily for flight training purposes, but I figured I'd try to make it interesting on top of function. This airport will be an accurate rendition of this airport with the exception of a few areas. The west ramp will be modified simply because of size constraints of the board itself. I'm adding in the old 4th Fighter Group restaurant that has been closed in real life for some time. In tribute to it I've redesigned it and will feature it in the same place it was originally. The other notable difference from reality will be the east ramp. I'm spicing that up mainly because, well, it's boring in real life!

I've added a Paint Program drawing of the master plan for the airport and have omitted out of the photo a lot of the finer details that I'm planning to do. I'll keep the progress updated here as I finish it. I'm sure I'll be picking some brains here in the future so thanks in advance to all!

Are you gonna add a blonde dude and a mexican falling off the bar throwing up a Beto's Breakfast Burrito and trying to light some beer-soaked Cubans?

What scale are you building it in? If this is your first airport, I would highly recommend making a smaller airport like something like a 12" X 12" just to get some practice on fine details, and general building skills. I've just built 4 smaller airports in preperation for a much larger airport and I've gained a lot of skill and also many ideas that I will incorporate into a giant custom airport. Replica projects are hard( from my experience) just because every inch/cm counts, you mess up one and you mess them all up at least in one area of the project. I have an airport that's a little bit bigger than the one your building but I've been steadily building and upgrading it for 7 years and trust me, it's a lot of work undertaking something that big especially for your first airport. Have a look around the gallery for some ideas and the squidoo website in my signature has some GREAT information for building airports.

Ah Dylan. I'm always down for a Jack and Coke! As for the Cubans, I had one the other night and thought of Seattle.

Alright Dylan, here's a couple of update photos and progress info from this NOOB! I know the picture quality bites big time, but I'm working on getting a better camera. These shots were taken with my phone so I apologize in advance! Plus I had to photo edit the crap outta them just to get the pencil marks to show up in the photo! In Fig 1, the overall mess is shown on Day 1 with me trying to establish the correct placement of the runways by using paper cutouts in the right dimensions. I'm using a 1"= 50' scale. Google Earth has been great to verify measurements in conjunction with my Paint Program printouts. Fig 3 shows one of the finished sections. The whole airport is separated into 6 different board sections for ease of transport and general handling. Fig 4 is a sneak preview of my lighting plan. More on that later!

The overall sketch work is almost complete as the top left quadrant is by far the most extensive. I should be ready for main area (runways, taxiways, ramps, ect.) overall painting in about a week or so.

I'm sure Cory appreciates the advice, but he WILL get this done. Plus he has me at his disposal.

Yep.. it was kinda obvious when you suggested meeting up and having drinks. But I was kidding, so please chill.. and I did detect a slight undertone of sarcasm in his writing when he took several photos. But sorry if you took it the wrong way...

Re: New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

Ok, I kinda found a camera better than the one on my phone! I finished Quadrants 1 & 4 today and took some shots of the two together and with my flight training airplane models. Yes I know the planes aren't in the proper scale, but oh well! I'll keep updating as I finish the sketches. Q1 was the most detailed and probably took the longest. About 4 hours worth of measuring, sketching, penciling, and erasing! But everything is proceeding as I planned and I'm pretty surprised by that. Looking forward to getting past this sketching and onto the meat of the model!

That's looking very nice indeed. I'm not the biggest fan of replica projects but it's still cool to see how they come out and how the creator advances and progresses. This is certainly alot to put on your plate for your first project. 10' x 6'! My airport is only an 8' x 4' and it was a thorn in my side to do the grid lines on the apron/taxiways. I don't know if I would want to deal with a massive 60 sq. feet! I always did love the pics of the first stages: The pencil lines and dimensions sketched out, the eraser shavings... The first stages really announce what kind of modeler you are. And I can tell just from the looks of it that your airport is going to be a fine one. Best of luck!

thornet28,

Hey I've seen you around the forum and have been curious about your airport. North Platte right? My question is do you have any pics yet or progress info? I'm interested to see what you've done. Thanks for the comments and advice too by the way. I'll take all I can get!
