Re: New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

Hey guys,

Just a few progress pics. I'm still interested in starting a web page to document my progress and it's still a possibility for me. The last pic I thought some of you veteran modelers could relate to. You find anything and everything to help when the time calls for it. I needed a weight to keep my T-square in place and the only thing available was that princess globe thing my girlfriend has in the kitchen. And yes Dylan, it's hers NOT mine! Punk!

Cory,

It's nice to see your progress... countless airports on here are dreamed up and never become reality... so it is nice to see someone new actually following through. Don't worry about admitting that you actually are the owner of that precious snow globe... we won't judge.

Note to all: Cory is an avid collector of ANYTHING princess.....or queen. Be it snow globes, or hand-blown glass bowls, or high heels.

Cory, how are you gonna lock those 4 pieces together, build some type of sub-frame? Lemme know when you start painting, I'll come over and drink beer and watch. Maybe we could put a Wham! record on.....

Can't wait to see the VASI/PAPI you have planned. When ya gonna let me come check this thing out?

Re: New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

Well for those that have been watching the website, you know I missed my scheduled finish date for the sketch work. But I'll get it done this week! Guaranteed! In the meantime, I'm constantly updating and adding stuff to the website so bookmark it and come have a look. Thanks for all the comments and advice, except for Dylan who usually just gives jeers! Just kidding, sort of. Dylan I'll be painting by next week, so drag your butt up to Ogden and let's do this!

Re: New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

I appreciate all the comments everyone. I know it's taking me a while to really get going on this, but it's the journey not the destination right? Just kidding, I hate that phrase! I want this thing done NOW, but I'm still learning and discovering new ideas on how to make ORL. Here are a couple of pics showing my finished sketch work. Once again, I tweaked the exposure and contrast to heighten the pencil lines so you guys can actually SEE the sketch work. The missing section to the right of the picture is going to be mostly landscape and some old, unused taxways. I discovered the 3' X 2' section was actually cut 2 1/2' x 2' so I need to get another one cut in the correct size. I've also made a couple of changes to my thought process on materials to make the hangars and FBOs. So we're getting there. I'm confident it will look fantastic so long as I take my time with it.

Another quick update and then I'll stop for a bit and give you guys a break! I finally started the "paving" process. Here's how it looks. It's a long way from done since I still have to sand it and paint it, but I just wanted to show you that I really do intend to do more than just draw pencil lines!

Re: New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

Did I miss something, or is that filler, to make it textured? THAT is a great idea (Y)! This airport looks very promising, keep it up

Actual "pavement" is just about one of the brightest ideas I've seen in a while. What a great way to start my morning off! What did you use for the pavement???

Or you can accidently use the rough side of plywood and and put on 4 layers of paint. works just as well.

Re: New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

Thanks for the comments everyone. The "pavement" is nothing more than joint compound (drywall mud) that will be painted with Woodland Scenics Concrete Top Coat. I just completed the first sanding job using 150 grit sandpaper and used more mud to fill in any defects or air holes. Once that dries, I'll sand it again using 220 grit paper and then apply 2 coats of the concrete paint. I toyed with the idea of just painting the runways and stuff, but then decided it would look more realistic if I could make it somewhat 3D. Of course I have lots of people at this site and other sites for my inspiration since almost all of you have much much more experience than I do. This is my first project and I recognize the mistakes I'm making now and probably will make in the future. But you guys and your advice has really helped me get this thing "off the ground"! Visit my site and you can see the details of the entire project including using this joint compound method. Thanks again for the comments and keep them coming! I need all the help I can get!

Re: New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

You will be glad you took the time to do 3-D for the pavement. For the non-paved areas, consider Woodland Scenics turf that is sprinkled on (over a green painted surface) to resemble grass--Your project is looking great, and thanks for keeping us posted! pete

Re: New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

The biggest and most detailed section is done! Just had to put this on here! The first pic shows the two previous sections now sanded, cleaned, and ready for paint. The other 3 show the large section taped off, mudded, and tape removed. Still have to sand and do touch up on it. The last shows a C-130 that parked on our ramp here in Ogden. The wingspan took up the entire ramp area until we turned it about 20 degrees to the left!

Re: New project - Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

I finished the "paving" portion of the airport using the joint compound method. The first picture shows the airport as a whole. The second shot has my 9 year old in it just to give the airport some size perspective. The missing section was too short and so I'll have to cut another piece of wood. The only thing in that section will be some landscaping, old taxiway remnents, and a warehouse area that exists in the southeast portion of the airport today. Painting will start immediately and should be finished in two days. Thanks for all the nice comments and keep them coming. Suggestions too! I learn from all of you.
