If You use the native draw functions in Word, the lines are vectorized.
If the files are converted to PDF, they will be converted to bitmap and thereby they will turn muddy if scaled up or down.
One solution is to convert to some CAD format, but then again, you'll need some software to use it, software that may: not be freeware, be unreliable freeware or complicated software.
If you do not have Word97-2007 available, the Word-format can be viewed and printed using the free available office viewers. Further, the word format can be viewed, printed AND edited by using Open Office (freeware)
Today, viruses are more or less not an issue compared to the possible danger of Trojans, Malware and Spyware that often comes with free software (not with reliable software i.e. Open Office and thee free office viewers from MS).
If You have a pc, you do have protection, right?
