diagonal parking positions

i'm planning on building a small airport without jet bridges. i was looking at photos of small airports and those without jetways, and i noticed that most of them during the old days had 'diagonal' parking positions.

Photos: - Aircraft Pictures | Airliners.net
Photos: Lockheed L-1011-385-... TriStar ... Aircraft Pictures | Airliners.net
Photos: Boeing 707-312B Aircraft Pictures | Airliners.net

is there a particular reason why this was done in the old days? is there an advantage to this position?

thanks for any info!

Re: diagonal parking positions

I've heard (correct me if I am wrong) that it takes up less space to park diagonally so you will be able to fit in more aircraft.

I honestly doubt that. I think it would be better to fit more aircraft at a terminal or at remote stands by doing it normally like you would at a gate.

Re: diagonal parking positions

I think it might be because it's easier for an aircraft (especially larger ones) to turn 45 degrees instead of the full 90.

Also, you will get more room on pushback if it's on a 45 degree slant with the taxiway, so that might be a factor?

Re: diagonal parking positions

There are also some diagonal arrangements done so that upon departure, the aircraft doesn't have to be pushed back at all--less equipment, staff, etc.

Re: diagonal parking positions

You can definitely fit more planes by parking them diagonally, but I don't know if that's why it was done

Re: diagonal parking positions

I remember that in the 70's the aircrafts at my home airport (SVG) used to park diagonally.
Thenb on departure it was "full steam" and fully to the right, and pushback was never really an issue at all.

I also remember that there was no blast fence against the terminal, so the windows vibrated like a big subwoofer, amplifying the sound from the old 737's and F28's.

I just tested it, the diagonal parking by placing five 747-400 line on a limited space, first diagonnal and then normal wing to wing (side by side) parking, the normal parkingway saved about 4-5cm = 10-15metre?

I don't have a picture of it, too lazy to grab my camera from the bag and take a shot of it.

But I concur Ramzies's comment. At first I thought it was to save space, but Ithink the purpose for this was to make it easier, more convinient for the ground crew and the flight crew.. like Nyup8 said above..

Oh comon dont be lazy ..... otherways I wil need to try it out my self! haha... But it sounds logic too.
When I started into this of making airports and collecting airplanes I didnt know anything about how to park the planes in the terminal. And I used to do it like in the pictures of hikoukie. I suposed that it was because at the bus terminal they parks like that haha.... (I was a little boy.... even if I allready was flying alot, I didnt care about how the planes parked.)

Re: diagonal parking positions

I think its all about space. Those old 707s and DC-8s are big airplanes, compared to like the standard jets of today like the regionals and short-hauls. You should play around with different airplanes and place them in different configurations on the tarmac to see how much real space you'll need.

The first thing I did was to go to Anet or JP, seached under "Airports Overview" or "Apron" there's thousands of photos where it shows different aircrafts at particular airports all over the world. I would say that is a helluva source to start looking. ROFL about the Bus terminal parking.

Re: diagonal parking positions

Most of the time the diagonal parking was so that the aircraft could just start up and pull out of the parking spot without needing to be pushed back. Mainly seen at places without jetways. These days you will probably see them at small airports that service regional jets and props.
