KBCA-California Dreamin'

I'd like to announce the near-completion of a new airport!

BCA, or Brisas International Airport at Carrie Fisher Field
logo

Brisas International is located in the city of Brisas, California (based on a combination of a few real cities). Brisas is a city of 150,000 about 350 miles south of the Bay Area and about 150 miles north of Los Angeles. The city is an up and coming resort destination for the region's jet set as well as a booming outgrowth of California's tech sector. Brisas boasts a gorgeous shoreline and beach scene, a charming old town and old Spanish mission, and easy access to natural areas such as several state forests and the Santa Ynez mountains. The area is known as the American Riviera due to its coastal geography and Mediterranean climate.

More on the airport and its facilities coming soon!

If its anything like Boomtown, I'm excited to see it! What airline traffic will we see at Brisas?

Re: KBCA-California Dreamin'

It will be simultaneously a lot like Boomtown and nothing like it. Brisas is a small- to medium-sized airport with a lot of local flavor. service is mostly domestic and regional with North American international traffic, though the airport authority recognized the potential supplemental income available from providing facilities for aircraft diverting from the larger airports in the area. Service is currently reduced for the winter low season.

PR NEWSWIRE
Southwest is California Strong at Brisas! The biggest carrier in the state of California currently operates 18 daily scheduled flights, mostly to West Coast and Midwest mega stations and point-to-point intrastate flying. Southwest also operates seasonal international flights to Mexico.

Alaska is the second biggest carrier at Brisas with 7 daily departures. Like Southwest, Alaska has offered seasonal Mexico service. Alaska used to offer more destinations but the battle with Delta at SEA has placed pressure on resources that the Virgin America merger may soon alleviate.

Always aggressively pursuing West Coast growth, Delta flies to three of its closest hubs from Brisas, and they have been teasing adding more capacity in the future.

United rounds out the largest domestic airlines in the US with modest regional jet service to nearby hubs. UA has taken a different strategy from AA, not wanting to poach traffic from its seventh-largest hub down the coast.

Air Canada is Brisas' only international airline during the winter season with daily service to Vancouver.

Surf Air, California's growing monthly all-you-can-fly airline, operates its Pilatus PC-12's to Los Angeles Hawthorne, Truckee-Tahoe, Napa Valley, and Carlsbad from one of Brisas' FBO's.

Progress report:
For this airport I wanted to take a shot at designing most of my own buildings to be constructed from cardstock. I liked the buildings that I ordered online but they weren't quite right and, of course, I had to design around them. Most of the buildings have been completed and the foil is almost done, I'm just waiting for a few details. This airport will be smaller in area than my last but will be more detailed.

Re: KBCA-California Dreamin'

I've finished my buildings! Pictures are intentionally bad as this is just a teaser.

The terminal at Brisas is a split-level design inspired by the California Mission style of architecture with one story for ticketing and checkin, baggage claim, and passenger drop-off and pick-up. Once passengers are checked in they proceed up stairs and escalators to TSA screening and the gates. The center tower houses a large atrium and on the roof is an open-air bar and grill, popular with locals for lunch and sunset cocktails.

Brisas has 7 gates, 6 of which are equipped with jetbridges. Gates 1,2, and 3 feature access to Customs and FIS and can be used for international flights. Gate 1 is a combination gate served by airstairs that can either hold two regional jets up to CRJ900 as gates 1a and 1b, or a large aircraft up to a 777.

Atlantic Aviation operates a large FBO on the south side of the field. FBO terminal designed by me!

Also on the south side of the airport is a small cargo facility used by FedEx feeder with service to LAX and the cargo operations of BCA's airlines. Airline cargo is driven to the terminal through a small tunnel under the east end of the runway.

Re: KBCA-California Dreamin'

Thanks! I designed it myself using GIMP then printed it on cardstock. The next step is to glue the cardstock tiles onto a sheet of plywood.

Re: KBCA-California Dreamin'

Around 0630 on a Thursday morning, BCA's first flights of the day are starting to move.

3-9 - 1

Over on the RJ ramp, Delta flight 863 to Salt Lake City, operated by a CRJ-900, is loading up for a 0645 departure. United flight 486 on gate 1b will leave for San Francisco at 0700.
3-9 - 3
3-9 - 4

At gate 1, Delta flight 98 to Seattle-Tacoma International is loading the last late bags while the fuelers finish their work.
3-9 - 5

On the north ramp at Atlantic Aviation, the private aircraft have been towed out to parking spots, but none of their owners have rolled out of bed yet.
3-9 - 6

Southwest carries more passengers within California than any other airline and has exclusive use of two gates at BCA. Originating flight 1443 to Las Vegas-McCarran is in the process os loading for an 0700 departure. On gate 7, flight 1599 to Sacramento, operated by an older 737-300, will leave at 0650.
3-9 - 8

The first arrival of the day, AA1316 from PHX, will taxi to gate 3 and turn out to DFW.
3-9 - 7

As AA's 737-800 taxis into its gate, Alaska flight 32 to Portland, Oregon heads for runway 22.
3-9 - 9

Re: KBCA-California Dreamin'

Very lovely domestic airport. Good Job! Like all those typical american traffic. Above all comes Southwest with loads of routes. Sadly The three Major carriers only bring their regional subsidairys to the airport, or fly only on or two routes with their own equipment. But all in all I love that, because you get a big mix between the regional aircrafts and the typical Airbus/Boeing stuff.

Fear not! Brisas is a popular destination and there will be plenty of mainline traffic. Just the early morning originating bank is mostly regionals.

Of course, it will be pretty 737-heavy, but I think y'all have figured out my preferences by now.
