Re: Air Hostesses
Famous Former Hosties
The recent launch of V Australia has reminded me of a sub-thread I've been wanting to do for a while - little exposés of notable or famous former air hostesses. And where better to start than with Richard Branson's mother? Evette Branson (née Huntley-Flindt) ![]() Eve Huntley-Flindt may well be responsible for the adventurous nature of her son, Richard. Born into a stock-broking family , Evette was an athlete and a dancer and a glider pilot instructor for RAF recruits (disguised as a man!). She eventually joined the Wrens as a signaler until the end of the war. After the war she became an air hostess with British South American Airlines (BSAA), flying in Lancastrians and Avro Yorks. A very glamorous job at the time, the requirements were that you had to be very pretty and unmarried, aged between 23 and 27, speak Spanish, and be trained as a nurse. Undaunted that she couldn't speak Spanish and wasn't a nurse, she conned her way into the training course and soon became a BSAA "Star Girl". ![]() Duties included offering chewing gum, barley sugar, cotton wool and Penguin paperbacks to passengers as well as rudimentary meal preparation. When BSAA contributed to the legend of the Bermuda Triangle with 2 unexplained losses of the new Avro Tudor IV, Ted Branson made her ineligible to keep flying by marrying her! These days she continues to fly as the inspiration for Galaxy Girl - the logo on Branson's Virgin Galactic airline. The first plane, a Rutan White Knight II, is named Eve after her and carries her likeness (as she looked when she was an air hostess) as Virgin's trademark flying girl on the nose. ![]()

Re: Air Hostesses
Just so you know Doc, you are reaching an impossible milestone with this thread. 100,000 views! That's quite an accomplishment! You should get a lifetime achievement award or something. It's record that won't be broken anytime soon. Kinda like Wayne Gretzky scoring 92 goals in a season.
Hey Doc, unrelated, but I have a blood blister on my thumb, should I pop it?

And yes, pop it!!! (and stop playing with that hammer )I think you are a very disturbed individual. Bit of a shame, really that we all age. Nevertheless, Eve's mother lived to be 99 and set 2 world records before she died, including the oldest woman to shoot a hole-in-one at golf!! The point is that you are only as old as you feel... That does not mean you have permission to be feeling up any 16-year-olds... Now, better put something legit in this post:

Re: Air Hostesses
This post should hopefully take the thread through 100,000 views...
So I would like to make it a special one... This is a fairly rare picture and it I like it for a number of reasons... It would be fair to say it is a classic... It commemorates a legend of aviation history, now sadly a thing of the past... It has a very retro feel about it, but also something futuristic as civil air travel became supersonic... It also captures a lost promise, not least because of the demise of the aircraft, but also because of historical events that would change the nature of air travel... This photo is reminiscent of the much more famous one of "City of Everett" on the roll-out of the Boeing 747 with air hostesses of the launch customers... It captures a similar pose with hosties from the launch customers for Concorde! At the front is a Qantas stewardess in the pale blue uniform with the distinctive "love-heart" peaked cap. ![]() .... and if, Hikouki, you even dare to ask what the other airlines represented are - look it up in your Funk & Wagnells!!! PS - if you guys are as sentimental about aviation history as I am, please let this post stand until the thread goes past 100,000 views - it just seems appropriate.

Re: Air Hostesses
Thanks for all the kind words guys. I'm glad this thread still holds some entertainment value.
I've really only still scratched the surface of the archives of material I've got. I hope I can hold your interest for a little while longer... Another one in a similar vein - Air Hostesses aboard Concorde. (circa 1979) ![]() PS - "Air Hostesses" is the longest word in English that is typed with only the left hand...
