But for now, a little more China Southern as we head into the Beijing Olympics.

Hey Doc, Have you ever thought of bringing out a book about all these lovelies?

Actually, I have. Whilst this is a fairly light-hearted affair, I have accumulated a fair bit of historic stuff. Others have already made some pretty good contributions but you never know...

Next in the hit parade, the 1983 uniform...

Re: Air Hostesses

Really great parade through the years of CX fashion. . Thanks Doc for taking the time to post them there are some real crackers in that lot. Very stylish uniforms that really could still be used today they are that good. As always waiting for the next post.
Keep up the good work....

Re: Air Hostesses

Getting close to the end of the CX series now...

Transition from the big bows of the 80's towards a more hawkish and sharp corporate look for the early 90's...

Re: Air Hostesses

Only a couple of days to go now before the Games begin, and getting close to the end of the Cathay Pacific run. Today, the uniforms introduced in 1999.

A nicely done jacket with a very stylish collar - no more bows!!

The uniforms have a nice short sleeve blouse that looks stylish but remains practical...

Only 26 hours to go before the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympiad!
Fitting to be bringing the Cathay Pacific fashion show to an end today.

Here are some of the modern uniforms...

didn't this uniform undergo some revision just recently? i remember they have been worn for quite some years already, but CX announced a 'revision' some months (?) ago. they were subtle and i could not notice the difference...

and here's a 'subtopic' to keep this thread running (aside from my 'caucasians wearing asian outfits')...how many airlines today still make their FA's wear national costumes, or at least local-inspired gowns?

i could only think of these:
SQ - sarong kebaya
MH - kebaya (inspired by nonya kebaya?)
TG - chitlada (only inflight)
VN - ao dai
indian airlines/ biman - sari
lion air - batik kebaya
china airlines - qipao?

the blouse-jacket-skirt combos of today look quite generic, in contrast to those i mentioned.

Re: Air Hostesses

May I be one of the first to say well done on a truly gold medal fashion show feature..... Like all good things, unlike death and TAXES , this wonderful show from Cathay has concluded .
Thanks Doc.
P.S. On the brighter side of things ....( after your Olympic break) I suppose there would be no chance of finding another fashion display....possibly Singapore F/A's .
I think they may just give the Cathays' at the very least, a good run for their money.
See ya on the catwalk...as they say....I think....

Still working on your earlier request... Will see what I can dig up about the subtle revisions.

Perhaps you are being a little unkind in your choice of words "make their FA's wear national costume" - perhaps "have uniforms based on their national costume" would be kinder. In that case, the Lufthansa Oktoberfest dierndls would come to mind. Most national costumes would not lend themselves to the task. Some of the Qantas uniforms are based on Aboriginal art.

I like to sprinkle those beautiful Singapore Girls around to brighten my days. Plus I've got a few other requests to do, but I may be able to oblige with a mini-feature on BOAC/British Airways sometime soon....

Said too much so I'd better throw in a bonus pic Hikouki will appreciate that even Cathay had hosties wearing the national costume of countries they visited at one time. This shot from the early 70's.

yup, you were right about my choice of words. but i guess i said it that way because national costumes tend to be elaborate and restricting in terms of movement.

case in point, our national costume for women on the far left of that CX post card was worn by PAL FA's at one point. but the long and skirts and loose sleeves made it difficult for staff to work efficiently.

also, i have to mention that in most cases when FAs wear 'national costumes,' certain body types get favored. think SQ, MH, TG, etc.

the modern uniforms with blouses and blazers allow for nanny- and granny-body-types.

You are soooo right!

I was almost too embarrassed to add the T-shirt, slacks, chewing gum and baseball caps for some of the US-based airlines

The Asian airlines benefit here from cultural influences that have retarded "equal opportunity" laws that have contributed to the loss of glamour from the skies.

Re: Air Hostesses

Only a couple of hours to go before the Olympic Games officially begin.

I really wanted to post these pics as a prelude to the Games... It highlights a small part of the enormous effort that a nation goes to to take centre stage before the rest of the world. Most of China's airlines took on hundreds of additional hosties in anticipation of the increased tourism that will accompany the games. Many, many hours of preparation has gone into their training. These pics show some of the hard work.

Learning the moves...

Serving...

Keen attention is paid to fine detail - how to greet...

Deportment...

Keeping one's knees together...

Elegance in squatting down...

And, well, I'm not sure what this part of the training is in aid of...

What drugs are you on????

Is that supposed to mean something? In any language?

If you will insist in posting random remarks, can you please at least make them intelligible?

Phew..... That's a relief. Just finished work and having a beer..... Thought it was time to go to bed already....

Re; This training....it's either training for really bad in flight weather...or serving very drunk passengers...... I'll look at the photo in a couple of hours and she will then be the right way up. I'm sure .
