Air Hostesses on the Stage

The Musical "Plane Crazy" on Broadway.

Some comments...
“A year ago, I got to see the musical performed at a workshop at Toronto's Poor Alex Theatre and it was fantastic: funny, catchy, engrossing, with a really authentic sixties-kitsch feel: like Hair at 30,000 feet, with seasonings of Jesus Christ, Superstar and Germaine Greer.”

-- Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing.net

“Plane Crazy is set during an explosive time in history: The intersection between the dawn of the Jet Age, the introduction of the Pill, the genesis of the modern Feminist Movement, and the Golden Age of Advertising.”

-- Suzy Conn, BlogwayBaby.com

... and some pics

Re: Air Hostesses

"Braniff is the inspiration behind the Venus Airlines in my musical, Plane Crazy. Oh, how I wish Braniff was still flying today.

In today's world of cut-rate airlines, it's difficult to remember that air travel was once a much more rarefied experience. Even routine flights would include roses for female passengers and seven-course meals on fine china and linen tablecloths. Stews at the time were required to make omelettes from real eggs in the galley, to cook steaks to order, and to run a complete bar.

"...boarding a plane was such an event that stewardesses took souvenir Polaroids of passengers as if they were sailing on an ocean liner or catching a dinner show. Once, there were planes with piano lounges. Once, a first-class meal might have included turtle soup served from a tureen, Chateaubriand carved seatside, and cherries jubilee. Steaks would be cooked to order - eggs, too, on breakfast flights."

- Bruce Handy, Glamour with Altitude, Vanity Fair, October 2002

Well, we can still dream a little. Here are some more pics (including blondie) and please note, they are all wearing FMB's

Caption this Picture!

OK - so here are some Hooters gals. I'm not sure what they are doing on this helicopter - I don't think that Hooters Airline ever flew them. So I don't really get what this picture is all about...

Who can come up with the best caption?

I put it in because I'm a bit of a pervert - that's one of the best penguin photo's you will ever see. (now don't tell me you didn't see the penguin)

Re: Air Hostesses

Ok another story.

I remember I flew with this one male F/A. We had a stretch of 4 days off after our 3 day trip. We were chit chatting with our F/A and he was saying that after our last flight that day he was planning on seeing friends down in Miami. A nice little 3 day visit in sunny Miami right?

After the 4 days off we were gathering for our next 3 day trip and asked him how is trip to MIA went. He said he didn't go but it was an adventurous 4 days off. He explained that he boarded his flight and settled into his seat, fell asleep and woke up as they were taxiing out. The flight attendant on his AA DC-10 announced..."Welcome aboard American Airlines flight 3 to Manchester, England..." He sat up and said "Oh sh**". Well, he thought, nothing he can do about it now except sit back and enjoy the 6 hour flight to Manchester. So he bought a hotel room in Manchester and caught the next flight back.

Apparently what he had done was after he got into the jetway, it split off and both jetways went to DC-10's so he didn't think anything off it. Lucky he had his passport so he could get back!

That sounds like the sort of thing I'd do! I once spent a day in Manchester - well actually it was on the motorway outside Manchester - new meaning to the word gridlock!

While we're on the subject of Britain, here are some English Air Hostesses. One of them looks a little hirsute

You should advertise your services Down Under... the drought down here has been so bad I reckon someone might pay your way down if you brought the rain

Re: Air Hostesses

Hero Stewardess #1 - Clarabelle "CB" Lansing

Today's post is dedicated to the memory of one of the airline industry's heroes - Clarabelle Lansing.

Clarabelle was the chief FA on Aloha Airlines ill-fated Flt 243 on April 29, 1988. She was blown from the aircraft when a portion of the forward fuselage disintegrated and was blown away. Her body was never recovered.

I do not have any photos of her but she has been portrayed more than once in film re-enactments of the disaster.

Today we remember her with pictures of the cabin crews of yesteryear who have flown with Aloha Airlines.
