In case you don't know, they are sold as souvenirs almost everywhere in Singapore just like those trols in Oslo or boomerangs in Sydney. They are available in three colours in accordance with their ranks inside the SQ cabin : red, green and blue like the one above. Even though they are not as "original" as the ones worn by the SQ girls, you can check them out at both terminal 1 & 2 Changi airport (you can't miss them) next time you fly from LHR to BNE. Good luck!

By the way, Doc, after EVA Air you forgot the other Taiwanese carrier here.................. China Airlines!

Re: Air Hostesses

OK Angie! Not a deliberate omission - I have scores of pics from many many airlines and I will get around to posting them in due course.

These are for you. Those girls look gorgeous and I understand the uniforms reflect the colors of the local orchids.

Re: Air Hostesses

Air Hostess History # 3 - Early days in the USA

As we have seen, stewards were introduced aboard airlines in Europe during the 1920's as equivalents of the stewards seen on steamships and railways, to cater for the needs of the affluent (if limited in numbers) flying public. They provided liquid refreshments.

In the United States, passenger airlines had a different heritage. After WW1 the US government saw the utility of air-travel to carry mail. Air companies fell largely undeer the jurisdiction of the Postmaster General, who allocated air-routes to aviation companies who tendered for them. As aircraft size increased with the advent of the likes of the Ford Tri-motor, cabin space became available to accommodate passengers. These early aircraft were cold, noisy and unpressurised. They were principally carrying sacks of mail and the few intrepid passengers would often sit on the mail bags.

Stout Airlines (later to be incorporated into United Air Lines) is credited as being the first airline in the USA to employ cabin crew. Called aerial couriers, these pioneers first flew in 1926 aboard Ford Tri-Motor airplanes between Detroit and Grand Rapids. Other ailrines experimented with the idea also with the male flight attendants - the were variously called aerial couriers, cabin boys, flight companions, airplane attendants, and stewards. Western (1928) and Pan Am (1929) were the first US carriers to employ stewards to serve food. Ten-passenger Fokkers used in the Caribbean had stewards in the era of gambling trips to Havana, Cuba from Key West, Florida.

During the early days of commercial aviation, a pilot or first officer on flights would often serve as cabin attendant, as well as assisting in flying the plane. But this splitting of duties proved inefficient, and airlines began to consider other options.

Things would not change much in the USA until 1930 and the vision of a young nurse and qualified pilot - Ellen Church.

... to be continued

Re: Air Hostesses

Famous Hosties - Part 1.

Clancy Bouvier.

That's right, father of Marge, Selma and Patty. The former navy sailor who lost his life in a bizzare roller-coaster accident was actually an air steward(ess). The story is revealed in "Fear of Flying", Season 6.

Another Hostie from the same episode.
