Re: Air Hostesses
As Qantas abandons its old livery, this pic is dedicated to those who remember an airline that wasn't always run by a group of self-interested multi-millionaires.

What the heck... one more for the Qantas Hosties.
This is the graduating class of 1968 modeling the brand new orange-red uniforms for a publicity shot.

Re: Air Hostesses
Hosties in Literature #2. - Shirley Flight
![]() You've met Vicki Barr - now meet Shirley Flight, her British Counterpart. Shirley was an air hostess on Transcontinental Air Lines. The series was released in the 1960's and featured our heroine in many exciting adventures, generally more perilous than the Vicki Barr series. Most of the books were written by Judith Dale, actually a nom-de-plume for the male author, Edward Reginald Home-Gall. ![]() ![]() I'm not sure why we have always had "air hostesses" rather than "stewardesses" over here. We certainly had stewards, but the hosties actually pre-dated them on Australian domestic airlines. Perhaps stewardess seemed demeaning next to steward but the title of hostess certainly fitted with the great attention that was taken to looking after passenger comfort and well-being in that era. ![]() ![]() In my view, either is infinitely better than "flight attendant". Here's Shirley looking very nurse-like in "The Flying Doctor"!

Ever wondered what it would be like to be stranded at sea on one of those airplane life rafts with a bevy of hosties? Let your imagination run wild...

Re: Air Hostesses
Now that's what I am talking about. Vijay looks excited as usual. For a guy who doesn't like to be compared to Mr. Branson, if you look at one of the pictures he's got Flight Attendants on the wing of a A320, holding flags. Hmmmm. But, hey can't wait to fly Kingfisher

Re: Air Hostesses
Air New Zealand
In 2005 Air New Zealand launched its new look including new uniforms by their leading fashion house, Zambesi. The uniform features merino wool cloth in the palette of "teal, greenstone and schist". First time pants are an option for stewardesses, and tie optional for men. The girls also get the option of the "military"style hat. The stewards coats are single-breasted. ![]() ![]() Initial responses were not too flattering. Lots of comments about the hat making the uniform look like the Thunderbirds. I actually think it looks like it has been lifted straight from German WWII uniforms of the 40's! ![]() The major objection seems to have been that they are too subtle from the public and that the staff just blend in with the background and all the other passengers. From the crew themselves - some issues regarding quality and that they require too much dry cleaning. ![]() Here are some ANZ hosties from an earlier era.

Hostie in an engine #1
There is something about an engine nacelle for a Kodak moment - particullarly if you are taking pics of an Air Hostess. A snug fit for these Canadian Pacific gals. ![]() An "Off-Duty" moment. ![]() PSA! (you just gotta love this airline!) ![]() Braniff
