The pope (at least the previous one) always preferred to fly on the de-facto flag carrier of the airport he is departing from. Case in point, he always flew Alitalia out of Rome, then the country's flag carrier on the way back.

It would be interesting to find out what arrangements are made on other "special chartered" flights.

Aboard flights chartered by the Thai royal family for example, it would be interesting to find out about the seating arrangements and what internal fixtures or layouts are changed. As I understand, FAs have to "walk" kneeling down when approaching a member of the royal family, as all Thais do on the ground. Feet must never point toward a holy or royal person. And the heads of royal or holy persons must always be above everyone else's.

I was once on a TG flight with a delegation of monks. The staff did as above - walked towards or past them, kneeling down and facing them. Their heads must be lower than the monks'. Later on, the FAs took turns offering the monks bottled water, such that by the end of the flight, I saw one monk walk out with ten bottles of water!

On another note, there was this video linked somewhere on the net about a Saudia flight. As many would know, most Middle Eastern carriers make their FAs wear veils, more so the conservative Saudis. On that BBC (?) documentary however, the FAs on a chartered Saudia MD-90 flight had NO veils on! It was a domestic flight chartered by some member of the royal household. The explanation given was that the "indecent exposure" was a private affair since it was a non-commercial flight.

Lastly, I heard that the FAs on Royal Brunei's royal flights are trained in certain tasks reserved only for the sultan that cannot be mentioned in public. [clue, the royal bedroom has top-view and side-mirrors]

I think #4 is SAA (by the scarf but hard to tell) and #5 is either China Southern or Air China...? (One of the Chinese ones but the name escapes me....) I am sure Flying Doc posted pics of the girls at a military base earlier in this thread... and #3 I think is LAN (or another sth american carrier....sorry jetlag has fogged my brain!!)
