Re: Air Hostesses
Cliff, that is so amazing!!! I hope she doesn't mind me posting these.Sadly I don't know where they are from as they were on my porable hard drive and when my computer crashed I lost all my picture notes...
Anyway it was so cool to finally find out what the older uniforms looked like. Wouldn't it be great if your friend still had hers, maybe she knows someone who does!!!

Re: Air Hostesses
Thanks guys for the filling posts and the great photos.
Back to work with the JAL mini-series... JAL 1960-1967 The next change in uniform would be more subtle. Also designed by Mohei Ito, the new uniform coincided with the introduction of jet services (DC-8) by JAL. Similar to its predecessor, the uniform was deep blue but with gold buttons. The original version of 1960 had a soft "milkman's" hat. This was changed in 1962 to the more familiar pillbox hat - similar to that used for the 1951 winter uniform. ![]() The original milkman's hat is seen here (3rd from right). ![]() The uniform with the revised hat is seen on the far left here, along with all the previous uniforms. ![]() Before finishing off the 60's tomorrow, a couple more pics of the early uniforms. We are indeed lucky that JAL has preserved this part of their history so well. The company has also had live modelling of the collection at a number of functions over the last few years which gives them much more life than on a rack or mannequin. ![]() ![]() It also brings the old B&W pictures to life.. ![]() I was interested to see the original pillbox hat was exactly that - a simple cylinder held on the hair with a hatpin!

JAL 1967 - 1970
![]() This uniform was designed by Japanese design legend Hanae Mori. Its introduction coincided with that of round-the-world services and the uniforms were launched at the party for the first flight! The uniform features a matching sky blue collarless jacket and skirt with a round-neck white blouse. The JAL broach was worn on the right breast. Hanae Mori ![]() Uniform Launch ![]() ![]()

Re: Air Hostesses
I like the interior of porter all open and not so ""cramed" looking unlike most other airlines.

Re: Air Hostesses
Today's post is dedicated to Thai Airways International, which is celebrating it's 50th anniversary today.
The airline has had one of its jumbos fitted out in retro livery for today's re-enactment of the first flight of the airline and the hosties are wearing retro uniforms from the past too. ![]() ![]() Although Thai Airways International was formed in 1960 as a joint venture between SAS and the Thai domestic carrier,Thai Airways, the parent company's history began as the result of a merger of 2 earlier airlines back in 1951. The initial livery of its planes was red until 1957, when blue was adopted at the time Lockheed Constellations were introduce into the fleet. The hosties uniforms became blue, too and sported the company's elephant head motif. Thai Airways - 1960's ![]() ![]() As you can see from these early pictures, the international airline always had uniforms in hues of purple and pink. ![]() ![]() The badge sported the traditional Thai dancer emblem. ![]() In 1977 the domestic carrier underwent a makeover, changing both the livery and uniforms to pink. The elephant logo was changed to a stylised lotus - the forerunner to the modern emblem. The uniform included a bowler type hat (similar to Pan Am and Air New Zealand),but also retained the white gloves that most airlines had dropped in the late 60's. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This seems to be a variation from the 70's - note the patterned blouse, absence of the scarf and the different badge on the hats - perhaps still the elephant motif? ![]() On-board service...

Re: Air Hostesses
In 1996, Thai airways Co. and Thai Airways International merged into a single airline.
![]() ![]() The lotus emblem was modified to the one in use today and the pink uniforms became purple. ![]() Those uniforms are being celebrated during the 50th anniversary celebrations. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For those lucky enough to be traveling, there is a commemorative tin of deserts which features the vintage uniform. ![]() Thai Airways is perhaps one of the most photographed uniforms around. Perhaps it is the natural beauty of the flight attendants or their grace and polite service. Perhaps it is also the dramatic use of rich silks in many colors that are worn in the traditional 2-piece Thai dress in-flight. ![]() ![]() Happy Birthday Thai Airways!

That is very pretty, Love the stars (forming the star alliance) and I really dig the ambient colours of their uniforms.

Re: Air Hostesses
They are great - and if you cannot find an original, you will have no trouble having a tailor make one for you from Thai silk at a very reasonable price!!!

Yes, I know Doc. Thanks for the tip, but I want the uniforms to be "real" uniforms and not copies made by a tailor. I guess the old style uniforms were recently reintroduced by Thai Airways (just like Cathay Pacific a few years ago) Because the uniforms were actually worn by cabin crew members on flights, it feels like the uniforms are "real" and not "fake". You know what I mean?

Re: Air Hostesses
OK - too tired to do another JAL post right now so a filler instead...
Fairly bland, I know, but these grey and anonymous-looking stewardess uniforms belong to Ural Airlines. ![]() JAL will look much more interesting by comparison!
