Thanks Cliff. Yes - I heard about the new uniform launch earlier this year as the airline underwent a major makeover. I must confess I would like to try their new service - they have introduced a la carte dining back into business class with your meals cooked on the plane and served when you would like!! Now that is service you don't get with many airlines these days. I wonder whether it has anything to do with the stake that Emirates now holds in the airline?

I also like the new uniforms - the new light blue looks good. The darker blue uniforms look a bit more matronly though. I'm glad they kept the peacock motif but the cut of the new Kandyan Sari is striking. The choli looks good on the younger women. Here are some more pics from the unveiling of the new uniforms in February...

The colour is described as shades of "sea blue" but to my eye it looks different in different light - from a light aqua to a greenish hue more reminiscent of the old uniform - especially in the yellowish light onboard.

And the old uniform for comparison...

The new uniform in bright light...

I particularly like the new jacket (5th photo) that replaces the old, red one...

Re: Air Hostesses

Ever wondered how those Japanese hosties tie their scarves with such amazing effect?

Here's how to tie a scarf ANA style!

Re: Air Hostesses

Hello again lads! (And ladies if there are any!!!)

I'm a few pages too late, but on the subject of JAL, if no one has mentioned it, there was a tv series made in 2006 about a girl becoming a 'cabin attendantu' with JAL. I believe they were involved with the making of it as many scenes take place in JAL hangars and in the crew training classrooms & cabin mockups.

I stumbled across it by accident in Bali, my sister saw flight attendants on a DVD cover and put it in the pile of DVDs we bought, I only watched it later in 2007 and it was fab! You used to be able to get it on youtube, I'm sure if you search 'Attention Please' it will show up in a search. (Subtitles and the picture quality isn't so good)

If you can get hold of a copy do so, it's quite amusing and plenty of opportunity to see the uniforms close up

"Atenshon purîzu" (2006)

As for pictures, I only wish I could share some of my collection but alas, due to conditions of my employment only my company may release PR photos on public websites. If they do become available online, I'll let you know.

Re: Air Hostesses

Funny that JAL should be brought up! (Thanks for the tip and would welcome pics if they are allowed) Quite by coincidence, today I was planning a little mini-series about the history of the JAL and JAS uniforms.

JAL hosties began flying in 1951.

The original uniforms were designed by Minoru Kadota. Like most uniforms of the era, they had a militaristic bearing and were cut from a light grey cloth with matching buttons. The tight skirt made boarding the DC-3 aircraft quite difficult and so it was soon changed.

The revised uniforms had a pleat in the skirt and the collar was removed from the summer jacket, giving it a sleeker look. The corresponding winter uniform was styled in dark blue with brass buttons. The cap had the winged brevet added also.

Re: Air Hostesses

In 1954, JAL introduced its first international flights with the DC-7 and a new uniform ushered in the change. Designed by Mohei Ito, it was set in Navy blue with the collarless jacket and white accents. It would remain in place until 1960.

Re: Air Hostesses

FlyingDoc, You had mentioned looking for the Mutton Chops from the 60's & 70's, I presume on the guys otherwise that would be just wrong!

Here are a few from the 70's for you. The last one was just for the fun of it.

Re: Air Hostesses

Now we all know of the Emirates uniform. The beige suit, the iconic red hat... but did you know, there used to be a SAFARI DRESS!!!!

(My favourite is the blonde girl left front; she is like 'Air Hostess Barbie' come to life!!! )

If you look carefully you can see the pocket scarf has the Black, Green & Red colours of the UAE flag.

I had always wondered what the uniform was before EK became 'famous'- now we know!! With the latest incarnation of the uniform it appears they have gone back to the red shoes and handbag of yesteryear!!!

Would love to see Cliff get his hands on one of these uniforms, I wonder if anyone still has any out there they could give him??

(Apologies if these have been previously seen!)

Re: Air Hostesses

Cabin Secure, thanks so much for these Emirates pictures. They are fantastic! Not only because pictures like this are hard to find, but also because a dear friend of mine is in two of these pictures! I can't believe this, but I just recieved a confirmation. Wow, it's a small world.
