Re: Air Hostesses

As today also marks this thread going past 400,000 views - let's have a little more Air New Zealand.

My favorite uniform was the creation of Barbara Lee that was introduced in 1993 and which was worn for 13 years! It re-introduced the teal colour on the blazer and was paired with a stylish scarf and bowler hat. The hats were phased out from October 2003.

The blazer had the distinctive wide navy lapels...

It was modified a little in 1996 when the airline adopted its new swoosh emblem.

It was retained until 2005 when the current uniforms designed by Elisabeth Findlay of Zambesi were brought in. Findlay is wearing black at this parade of retro uniforms...

Although meant to capture the colours of New Zealand and reflect its natural palette, the Zambezi uniforms were met with a lot of criticism. Not only were they compared to Thunderbird uniforms, they creased easily and faded quickly, leading to jibes of being boring.

Re: Air Hostesses

Today I thought I might finish up with Air New Zealand.

The proposed new uniforms are being designed by women's fashion designer, Trelise Cooper (below) and will be introduced in 2011 to coincide with the introduction of the new B777-300's into the ANZ fleet.

The new uniforms have stirred up even more controversy than Findlays's (below)

From one extreme of "boring", the colours of the new uniforms are being criticized for being bright and childlike "Barbie" pink. The use of pinstripes and 4-buttoned blazers was another criticism. The koru-inspired motifs on the dress fabric has even been lambasted for being culturally-insensitive to the indigenous Maori.

Here are some pics of some of the new uniforms. IMO these particular ones are not as bad as the pink nightmare posted on all the news releases. Not sure that pinstripes are going to survive very long as a fashion statement and that motif is much too in-your-face for my liking.

One ANZ stewardess commented on the release that the pink looked like a dress worn by the drag queens on ANZ's pink flights. Since 2007, Air New Zealand has had special flights from San Fancisco to Sydney to bring revellers to Sydney's Gay Mardi Gras. The cabin crew are all dressed in drag and pax are served pink drinks and receive special pink bags of goodies. There is on-board entertainment and the flights have proven very popular with the gay community.

Here are some pics...

Any knowledge of this badge?

Great posting as always

Re: Air Hostesses

Very easy to oblige those requests (and will do in time) but I don't want this to end up like Dazza's userbar thread - you will just have to wait and see what turns up next...

Today, Oman Air
