Re: Air Hostesses
Hi there Doc,
cannot believe the post count on this thead. Like a good wine it still gets better. I have to agree with other comments that at some stage you really are going to have to publish. This with a few of your "Specials" will make a fantastic coffee table / specialist read. Thanks again for your time and effort and always remember the B.O.A.C. Gals. Cheers, Colin.

Re: Air Hostesses
Time to finish out my little mini-series of military cabin crews.
Canada Forces Air Command operates VIP jets from 2 squadrons. Their duties include transport of government officials and visiting dignitaries in addition to military transport roles. If the monarch is visiting, the term Queens Flight is still used. ![]() The principal transport squadron is 437 Sqn, which operates a fleet of 5 A310-300's, designated CC-150 Polaris. One is fitted out as a VIP aircraft and the rest serve a dual role with capacity for air refuelling also. ![]() ![]() The crew aboard the Polaris may also include trained medical crew when operating in theatres of war or for medevac missions. ![]() ![]() Before the amalgamation of Canada's armed forces, the RCAF operated a B707 designated CC-137 Husky. The squadron is still known as the Husky squadron. ![]() The second squadron operating VIP aircraft is 412 Transport Sqn, which operates 6 Challenger 604 VIP jets, designated CC-144. ![]() ![]() ![]() The cabin crew are designated either as Flight Stewards or Flight Attendants. The difference is that Flight Stewards are drawn from Stewards or Cooks within the services, whereas Flight Attendants are drawn from the ranks of any branch of the services. All are volunteers who serve a 3 year term with an option for an additional year. All must be fluent in both English and French. The difference is essentially that Flight Stewards are responsible for food preparation and provisioning but both are involved with food service, passenger comfort and safety. Those serving on 412 Sqn have usually already had 2 years experience with 437 Sqn. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() More recently Canada has also operated 4 C-17 Globemaster III's which are designated CC-177. They belong to 429 Sqn and are also able to be configured as PAX aircraft. This is usually when large troop movements are required but they have also been used to ferry civilians, most notably during the recent medevac operation from Haiti. Trained cabin crew are not necessarily used on these flights. Depending on circumstance you may not get a seat either! ![]()

Nice to see some rare Canadian content! Funny when I was in the miliatry I flew on the 707 fleet. They went from West to East and back all week! When in College I worked for the ground service company that looked after Wardair and those same A310 the military bought after Canadian bought Wardair!

Re: Air Hostesses
I will have to try harder to make sure there is Canadian content!!!
Thanks Carlos for the vid - I think the previous references to the Air Strip have mostly been stills. Today, will focus on the military cabin crews of the United States of America, which are mostly derived from the 89th Airlift Wing, USAF and based out of Andrews AFB. Most cabin crew, known as Flight Attendants, serve with the Air Force reserve. There are about 215 on rotation with the 89th Air Wing. The VIP fleet is many and varied including Learjets (C-21), Gulfstreams (C-37), B757's (C-32), BBJ (C-40) and a variety of helicopters. Most famous, of course, are the 2 highly modified B747-200 (VC-25) aircraft that are frequently used as AirForce One, when carrying the US President or Commander-in-Chief. The use of military planes to transport high-ranking government officials harks back to the 1st and 2nd Staff Wings of the USAAF in 1936. FDR was the first president in office to use air transport when he was flown to Casablanca in a Pan American B314 Dixie Clipper in 1943. The first officially-designated presidential plane was a modified Douglas C-54 Skymaster and the Act that established the USAF was signed by President Truman aboard that plane! The 1254 Transport Wing assumed the role of VIP transport until it was replaced by the 89th in 1966. Early uniforms were typically those of a military Steward - the air force still being predominantly male-oriented. ![]() Later the uniforms evolved to resemble their civilian counterparts. These crew are wearing white blouse with a skirt and a pragmatic apron. ![]() Although these days the cabin crews are still employed by the military, their uniforms on-board are not military-looking. They are almost a generic collection of modern style uniforms. There seems to be a lot of variation allowed also. The trend is for either a dark coloured (navy or black) dress or pant-suit with matching waistcoat. The suit is worn with a coloured shirt and both may be worn with a coloured neck scarf. Male crew also wear a coloured shirt with tie and waistcoat. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This crew of the VC-25 serving as AirForce One show considerable variation in their uniforms. ![]() As reservists, the flight attendants do have military uniforms too!

Re: Air Hostesses
The South African Air Force (SAAF) operates a VIP jet fleet from AFB Waterkloop - the responsibility of 21 Squadron.
The fleet includes Falcon 50, Cessna Citation II, Falcon 900 and B737-BBJ (presidential) aircraft. See if you can spot the hosties...
