Re: Air Hostesses

One of the great differences between cabin crew in the West and those in China is cultural. Most western FA's are simply salaried employees of listed companies that are aiming to make a profit - regardless of their passion for flying. Whereas in the past, stewardesses would frequently be seen in public - visiting schools and encouraging the next generation of "fly girls" to consider flying as a career - these days it is mostly about rosters and award conditions, unless it is promotional work.

Not so in China, where the position they hold in society is almost revered by many who still struggle to escape the poverty of village life. The airlines (and society itself) expect their employees to volunteer for civic duty and projects. These are usually organised affairs. The hosties will often visit schools, hospitals and nursing homes to help out. They frequently promulgate government-sponsored campaigns to promote health and environmental friendliness to the mas$es. They help out at the zoos, put on variety shows and have even been known to direct traffic!!!

Here are some shots of Air China cabin crew visiting an army camp to entertain the recruits... The show included singing, music, games, comedy sketches and even a history of the airline itself.

These beautiful hosties were kitted out as soldiers for one routine.

Morale must be good after a visit like this!

Re: Air Hostesses

Woh. Some of the Air China and the Chinese Army pics are quite strange - seeing hostesses entertaining soldiers at a base. That just wouldn't happen else were in the world I think.

All of the KLM photos are super-clear. They look great - you should try using a photo hosting site such as 'Photobucket'

I found this bright and funky one, Wizzair of Hungary.

Re: Air Hostesses

Moving along, I was hoping to introduce a little mini-series over the next week.

Whilst the Air China girls might don military uniforms for troop entertainment shows, the military forces of the world have their own flight attendants too. The name for cabin crew serving with air forces varies from nation to nation. They form a vital part of non-combat troop movements and are often also involved in governmental VIP transport.

Last year, these service members hit the public limelight in Australia when the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, had a hissy fit aboard a RAAF 34 (VIP) Squadron B737-BBJ which serves as his personal air transport when traveling the nation or abroad. Apparently he brought a 23-year-old air hostess looking after him to tears after levelling a tirade of abuse for serving him red meat when he was on a diet! (which is hardly the sort of publicity that the squadron is looking for).

Today a selection of Crew Attendants from the RAAF. Over the next week or so I will bring you crew from a variety of other air forces.

34 Squadron (operating B737-BBJ, Challenger 604)

33 Squadron (formerly operating B707-338's)

Not all crew attendants stay within that branch of the service. This former CA went on to become a WO with the RAAF's hogs!
