Re: Air Hostesses

Today's Post - A Tribute to the Hosties of Ansett.

Ansett - founded by Sir Reg Ansett, operated 1936-2002. Sadly missed by many. The Hosties that used to fly with them were GREAT!! The heritage goes all the way back to 1936 - a theme for another post later - and the sensational service they provided can be traced back to the early days under the watchful eye of "Matron", aka Mrs Ulm.

Sir Reginald with some Hosties at the launch of the DC-9. Those gloves are almost as good as FMB's - gone but not forgotten.

The 1940's. The Hostesses met passengers from the bus at the botom of the stairwell.

A photo parade of the Ansett uniforms over the years.

The uniforms of the 1970's modeled in front of a B727. I only acquired this pic today and it is my favorite because the hostie in the middle in the white uniform was formerly my secretary (Sherryn Blundstone). She is married to a former Ansett pilot and now lives in Queensland. She is going to be so embarrassed when I show her this pic!!!

I also love those shots that the airlines used to do with the whole crew, including ground crew, service crew and catering etc. It bred Esprit de Corps. This is from the late 70's when the hosties were wearing Ansett Orange. The bee-hive hats are gone but the newer red hats are reminiscent of their predecessors.

Hostess training in a mock-up cabin.

Ansett uniforms in the 1980's

The beach look for summer in the 80's!!

The look in the late 80's.

This 1990's look was more debonnaire!

The new Millenium and official airline of the 200 Sydney Olympics.

Sadly, the end of an era!

Modern Air offered, I think it was in 1970, a so called "get away from mama" flight, also called "Busenvogel" (Bosombird) flight. It was on father`s day and the stewardesses were german showgirls ... hope you like the photo !

Re: Air Hostesses

Slightly off mark-but hosties serve it so i think it qualifies. After three years of hunting i managed to find somewhere that sells my 2nd fav Aussie beer-and it was at an airport. My salute to Australia for producing the best lagers!

Marcv-very cool pic my friend!

Does anyone know of a current airline that uses an all pink uniform. My money is on FCA but its been a while since i flew with them. Thanks

Hey MarcV - what a great piece of airline nostalgia! Never heard of ModernAir but nobody's ever given me a fathers' day present like that.

The closest I can recall was back in 2003 Ecstasky Air began operating out of California with charter flights from around the US to Las Vegas. The stewardesses were all topless dancers that offered "sky spas" with manicures, pedicures, massages. All first class seating, free limo pick up to the airport and in-flight entertainment. LA to Las Vegas was about $2000.

Here are some pics of the stewardesses- I don't think the airline lasted very long at all. (But it did spark quite a lot of discussion)

Re: Air Hostesses

Yummier than chocolate?... Chocolate with a Hostie on it!

My Thai flight home from Bangkok had these lovely Belgian Chocolates available duty-free. How could I say no? Belgian chocolate is the best in the world!!

The company that produces them is called StarBrook Airlines. It was co-founded in 1998 by the artist who paints the pictures that adorn the chocolates, Jaak de Koninck (aka Jack Learoy). They are now sold worldwide in a variety of airports. Try some if you see them - you won't be disappointed.

Here are some detail shots of the artwork:

Vicki Barr - The adventure seeking heroine of a series of books written for teenage girls. The Vicki Barr Flight Stewardess Series was published by Grosset and Dunlap from 1947 to 1964. Sixteen books were released and were authored by Helen Wells and Julie Tatham.
]

The series followed on from the successful Cherry Ames series of the 1930's, written about a sleuthing nurse. Here is a quote describinbg Vicki:

"Vicki is shrewd, though romantic, delicate but tough. She likes to wear perfume and high heels and flowing dresses. She is proud of her blue uniform. The description of her reveals a deep paradox in the career girl sleuth books: it is deeply ‘feminine’ to have an ‘appearance’ and to seem what you are not. It is also a surprise to be other than you seem-to have brains as well as prettiness, toughness as well as fragility, to be human and also female, to have actual muscles as well as a fairylike fragility. Girls can identify with being small-dainty-feminine-inferior, and yet they can be up there with the boys-tough and untouchable, worldly and free.

The series’ first book, Silver Wings for Vicki, chronicles Vicki’s entrance into the occupation, demonstrates her talent, and endows her with celebrity when she catches jewel smugglers. Newspaper titles state, “Blonde Air Hostess Corners Criminal in Air.”

These books portrayed the image of air hostess as a pioneering, brave, adventurous, resourceful heroine and certainly would have inspired many young women of assertive and independent nature to take flying on as a career in the post-war years. Although women were extensively employed in factories and many other walks of life during WWII, when the war was over the men came home and took the jobs and women were expected to return to domestic duties. For many, the life of a stewardess offered something much more exciting and rewarding.

It was translated into several languages includeing French, Norwegian and Swedish.

The British equivalent was the Shirley Flight Air Hostess series of the 1960's (more later)
