Re: Air Hostesses

In Memoriam.

15 years after the loss of American Eagle flight 4184 with a full load of 64 passengers and 4 aircrew, a thought & prayer for Sandi and Mandy - the 2 stewardesses aboard, and their family and friends.

Sandi Modaff was only 27 years old and had 3 sisters who also flew as Flight attendants. She had been with Simmons for 8 years.

Amanda (Mandy) Paige Holberg was only 23 and had started working for the airline barely 3 weeks earlier.

Flight 4184 went down on a rainy, cold Halloween. The commuter flight from Indianapolis was in a holding pattern waiting to land at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. The ATR-72 turboprop had encountered freezing rain as it circled, which caused ice to build up on the wings, dooming the plane.

The crash and the efforts of the victims' families helped spur passage of the federal Aviation Disaster Family Assistance Act of 1996. It mandated new regulations in airline safety and response tactics and required airlines to provide crisis counseling and other assistance to the families of crash victims.

The pain of the loss of Flight 4184 is still very keenly felt 15 years on. May they rest in peace.

Re: Air Hostesses

That's a very nice tribute Doc. I never knew Amanda, and it's sad she was a newbie there that had to happen.

Sandi was always great fun as were her sisters. I remember Sandi when she first got on with Simmons. I was still flying the Shorts 360. I remember the trip we did to AZO Kalamazoo, MI. We all went to Chi Chi's for tacos and beer. Sandi left before us. We were worried that she would make it back to hotel safely which was within walking distance. All three of us that morning had terrible headaches! Good thing we had a long overnight that trip! Otherwise we wouldn't have gone out the night before. I used to call her Modaffi cause I thought she was crazy. In a good way. I always liked Sandi.

Re: Air Hostesses

Super Quiz

Time to scratch your heads a little. Today's post is a competition. The person to name the most airlines uniforms correctly gets a prize and if you can correctly name every uniform then also a bonus prize. Only one entry per person. Closing time is midnight Eastern Australian Daylight Savings Time on November 30. PM me your answers, but remember - only one entry per member.

Please identify according to the following:
Row 1 (Back Row): L to R 1-12
Row 2 : L to R 1-13
Row 3 : L to R 1-14
Row 4 (Front Row): L to R 1-14

Clue: All these airlines flew in or into the USA during the 1950's.

Good Luck!!!

Re: Air Hostesses

A little bit of history...
Last year, British Airways celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first transatlantic jet passenger service with a special flight where the air hostesses donned the BOAC uniforms of 50 years earlier.

The B747 flew FLT 117 from Heathrow to New York on 4 October - exactly 50 years after a BOAC Comet flew into Idlewild. Stewardess Nicola Reeve is pictured in the 1958 uniform.

Re: Air Hostesses

Eastern Airlines

Eastern starting using stewardesses back in the days of Eastern Air Transport. In the beginning, Eastern's flight attendants wore nurses uniforms. As years passed, they eventually got away from wearing nurses uniforms and modernized their look, changing them quite often.

Thanks Dazza. I guess that's a reminder that I really must finish my little history series sometime soon.

But tonight I am just too tired!
