Yeah I knew it was PSA's uniform in the 70's. You showed us all before in some previous posts.

There they are the real PSA hosties :

Doc, without meaning to interrupt, may I have your permission to post something here as an intermezzo. If you don't mind?

Of course! Never intended it to be a one man show - it's just that I've got kinda interested in the topic and have gone away and done some reading. I'd be grateful for any and all posts from any other member.

Re: Air Hostesses

Thanks for the time Doc, I just didn't want to interrupt the 70's atmosphere going on this thread from the beginning. That's why I will only call this an intermezzo.

Along with recent excitement about 787 prototype finishing, here is another example of media presentation about air stewardesses in present time. I stumbled upon this indoor Boeing 787 promotional billboard at HKG, featuring air hosties of the airline customers for 787 in Asia-Pacific region.

I know it's nothing special as you all here might have seen it at your own home airports. I apologize for the picture's quality above. It was taken with my toyish pocket camera from poor angle and distance.

Due to the big size of the picture, I had to resize it and sacrifice the clarity of the airline logos. I wish I could find a real web picture of this one.

From left to right, the airline logos aligned with their respective hosties featured in this billboard are as follow :

Vietnam Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, All Nippon Airways, Hainan Airlines, Air China, China Southern, China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines, Air New Zealand, Korean Air and Japan Airlines.

It was stated before, air stewardesses look more like bank employees nowadays. In my opinion, they are still the cutest profession to this date.

Back to you Doc, ta!

Hey Angie, that's awesome! You know, in the "old days" the airlines prided themselves on their cabin crew and they were often the major selling point in influencing people to fly with their airline. In Asia, this pride in passenger comfort is still evident. It was certainly an eye-opener how hard the crew worked on my recent Thai flight and their levels of courtesy and helpfulness. Sadly that seems to be getting lost in the modern era. I was reading yesterday how a cabin crew member took offense to 2 passengers canoodling each other in their seats. It may be that they really were upsetting other passengers but when one of the passengers remonstrated with her, the result was that the couple were arrested upon arrival of their flight!! The new anti-terrorist laws were invoked on the basis that they were not complying with directions of cabin crew. Now that is probably overkill of the highest order, but the point that it brought home to me was the Flight Attendant's perception of what their role is.

Anyway, back to your pic, this is beautiful. It is nice to see those airlines recognising the human face of their organisation. What's more, it is really a great part of the historic launch of a new generation of passenger aircraft. It is very reminiscent of Furry's pic of the launch of the 747 4 decades ago.

Today's Post - Miss InterSky

This one is for Waffle. In fact, I am surprised I haven't seen his face amongst these pics. The pics are from the inaugural Miss InterSky competition last year. I believe the girls are all stewardesses for the company that hail from Switzerland, Austria and Germany (around the Bodensee). Anyway, I'll let the pics speak for themselves.

Re: Air Hostesses

Great pic Angie-Doc and i raised something similar when chatting about the 741 launch. I was hoping they would do it with the 748-glad they did it with the 787.

Doc-awesome pictures. I had to fly easyjet this week and for the first time in about three years i not only had one beautiful hostie-but two-almost made the trip worthwhile.

On a slighly serious note-i unfortnately had complex surgery on my right hand this week and have lost use for the next 10 to 20 weeks. There will by typos and grammar errors in my posts. I apologise but the effort it takes to sort out is quite substantial at the mo-so i hope you all can see your way to giving me a by-ball for a few months.

Cheers

Chris

Re: Air Hostesses

History - Part 2; Sky Boys and Stewards

Probably the best-remembered pioneer of the early stewards was the Flugbegleiter Heinrich Kubis who began working as a steward on DELAG's Zeppelins in 1912. By 1929 he had been promoted to Chief Steward and he was among the survivors of the Hindenburg disaster of May, 1937.

On that fateful flight he had actually confiscated a toy truck from one of the children aboard because the friction motor produced sparks! The memoirs of one passenger who survived recalled that apart from supervising meals and passenger comfort, that he would also pass out postcards, writing paper and pens to passengers.

The Hindenburg - this gives you an idea of the scale of this aircraft compared to a B747 and the RMS Titanic. It remains the largest commercial aircraft ever built.

The Hindenberg also had 6 stewards and 1 stewardess aboard and a cabin boy (Werner Franz) aged 14 who was responsible for looking after the officers' mess. One steward (Max Schulze) and the stewardess, Emilie Imhoff (aged 47) perished in the fire.

The Hindenburg Dining Room

This picture of the survivors shows Wener Franz at front and Heinrich Kubris at centre of the arched window to the right of the picture.(#15 in key)

After that fateful day passengers never again flew in Zeppelins although many reserved tickets in the event that they might fly again. In the end, they simply became uninsurable.

Whilst the airships were undoubtedly the flying hotels of the era, fixed wing passenger services were starting to take hold in Europe at the same time. In 1922 Daimler Airway of Great Britain became the first such airline to hire cabin crew. Three 14-year-old boys of slight build became the first cabin boys and flew the Croydon - Paris route. They helped passengers with their baggage but were otherwise on board simply for passenger reassurance and aesthetic. Food and beverages were not served.

Daimler Airway was one of 4 passenger airlines that were merged by the UK government in 1924 on the recommendation of the Hambling Committee to form a national airline - Imperial Airways, the fore-runner of BOAC and British Airways.

Imperial were to fly larger aircraft such as the Handley Page W10 and Armstrong-Witworth Argosy during the 1920's. Catering to the well-to-do, meal and beverage services with one or 2 stewards was introduced.
