And for a serious note, some well-known AUstralian flight attendants, Greg Khan and Denise Hickson, who were injured fighting off an attempted hijacking back in 2003.

I myself am cabin crew (though I prefer 'hostie', being an Aussie, it just sounds friendlier!) and wish we were back to the days when uniforms actually had style! I've also always had an obssession with uniforms and avidly look at all kinds of details, I didn't think there were anyone else out there who noticed small details such as you all do!

(For example, the Royal Jordanian girl who had you all stumped for a dfew pages =)

I don't think this one has been posted before, so I humbly contribute this photo to make up for gatecrashing your thread

I also have somewhere in storage a vintage Ansett Australia grooming manual which has some great pics of all the uniform variations (late 90's if I recall correctly) as well as how to tie a scarf etc...
Welcome aboard! And thanks for your contributions. I had not seen this Max Factor/TWA ad before but it's a beaut. I believe I may also have a copy of the Ansett grooming manual hidden away somewhere, but feel free to post.

Glad you are enjoying the thread - there's plenty more to come. And welcome to Wings 900!

Re: Air Hostesses

Thanks Doc, and Brian!

I think it's really interesting to see how the changing fashions and cultures of different airlines and countries influenced the change in uniforms over the years. But we all know there's one who hasn't changed.... and I know you all love these girls...!

Apologies to TravelQuality.com, but it was too good not to share. There's more on their web site.

These ladies below have already made an appearance, here is a different group photo. I don't think it was mentioned, but they are from MEA of Lebanon. This has got to be one of mmy favourite 'modern' uniforms. You can't really see it here, but there is an adorable ruffle on the skirt hem. I have another photo somewhere which shows this which I'll post if I find it (also shows offf the girl's rear nicely, too! hehe)

And finally, one to show that hosties are human- taken on the last day of operations of Ansett Australia.

I remember this one made the front page of the paper and a lot of web sites.

These photos were turned up in various Google searches over the years, so I don't take credit for owning any of them. Unfortunately the link information I stored with them was lost, so if you know who any of the owners are please let me know!

The new uniforms for Canada's Porter Airlines were designed in 2006 by Kimberley Newport (centre) of Pink Tartan.

Re: Air Hostesses

Hey, I can't be bothered to look for the new KLM uniforms, do you remember if you have posted them recently ?

I read somewhere that they had revised the uniforms by September? Would you know anything about this?

Apology if this has been posted.

Very topical - the new KLM uniform designed by Mart Visser (pictured below) was launched only 4 days ago at Schiphol.

"KLM Royal Dutch Airlines presented its new women’s uniform at a fashion show held at Schiphol. From April 2010, more than 11,000 cabin and ground crew members – and KLM and KLM Cityhopper’s female pilots – will begin wearing the uniforms created by Dutch fashion designer Mart Visser.

While the new uniform will retain the KLM blue colour that has characterised it since 1971, it does boast a completely different design. “By investing in a new uniform we are demonstrating, especially now in these times of financial crisis, that we have confidence in the future and the KLM brand,” said KLM President & CEO Peter Hartman. “Mart Visser sees company clothing as a statement to the outside world. His philosophy ties in nicely with KLM’s wishes. It’s fantastic to see how much pride the ladies exude dressed in the new uniform.”
A great deal of prior research went into identifying user wishes and requirements. For example, the uniform must be comfortable yet sustainable, suitable for use in different seasons, and in keeping with KLM’s image. Mart Visser set off at the start of his creative process armed with such information. Mart Visser: “Regarding my creations, I always say: ‘back to a new tradition.’ In addition to aspects like comfort and functionality, I’ve added my signature as a designer to other good traditions such as the KLM blue: a feminine form with an open, fresh and powerful look and feel. This generates feelings of pride and pleasure, impacting KLM’s passengers favourably too.”
In recent months, one hundred KLM employees tested the creations in practice. The trial provided a wealth of information, on which basis several aspects of the uniform have been improved. The new uniform will be visible on the ground and in the air from April 2010. The current women’s uniform was presented in 1990. Mart Visser’s design marks KLM’s 10th women’s uniform since the first outfit was introduced in 1935. The men’s uniform was revamped in 2000 by fashion icon Oger."

The uniform has been on trial since June this year but has received very poor reviews from cabin crew because the materials crease very readily and have been likened to looking like a crumpled old newspaper from the beginning of the shift! I'm not sure if the problem has been rectified. Hosties have a choice of tight skirt, looser dress, or slacks which are worn with a white blouse and KLM blue jacket.

Some more pics.

Hope this helps Jay.

Re: Air Hostesses

Thank you Doc. What a good read, and the new uniforms looks exciting. :-) These uniforms were launched in time for it's 90th anniversary. Yes. 90 years old. KLM was launched on the 7th, cotober 1919. Amazing. Hope to see KL make it to it's 100th anniv. Thanks also for the youtube link.
