Re: Air Hostesses

In 1951, new uniforms were designed by Georgette de Trèze. These were marked by cinched waistlines and hourglass figures and propelled air hostesses into the iconic and feminine look of the Golden Age of flying.

Air France in the 60's

In 1962, new uniforms designed by Marc Bohan, director and head designer of the House of Christian Dior, were introduced. Inspired by the 1961 Slim Look collection, Bohan's trademarks were simplicity, style and function - often complimented with a butterfly bow. Bohan came to head the House of Dior in 1960, replacing his younger protegé, Yves St Laurent (who was required to enter military service and then suffered a nervous breakdown), and headed the company successfully until 1989 with his penchant for practicality and style.

Re: Air Hostesses

As some of you may know, Greece's national carrier OLYMPIC AIRWAYS hast been sold to a UAE-GREEK investment company called MARFIN. Starting October 2009 Marfin will take over the airline making some mainor yet profitable adjustments. Along with those MArfin will also change slightly the logo and some of the general look. Along with that comes the crew fashion. Under www.oafashion.gr you can see those changes. The airline will be now called OLYMPIC AIR. www.oalogo.gr is the site where the frehher logo is portrayed.
Good luck to MARFiN turning this airline to profitable

Re: Air Hostesses

Time to get through the remainder of the Air France heritage of uniform fashions.

In 1968, Air France engaged Cristóbal Balenciaga to design the next uniforms - perhaps the most iconic and classy seen. The winter uniform retained the traditional navy blue but the summer uniforms were of lightweight pink or sky blue. Whilst Balenciaga was seen as being old school, his contribution to AF uniforms is regarded by many as the best ever. It also saw the inclusion of trademark knee-high leather boots for the winter uniform - a radical departure from the more demure footwear that accompanied the Dior collection that it replaced. It was the Spaniard's last collection before he retired.

Re: Air Hostesses

Hey Doc, I realise that you have a great photo collection but I never thought that your aviation collection would extend to "Barbie" - but while I raise that question how many airlines have released "Barbies" or dolls for sale? (No this isn't a funny question - given the amount some people have paid while collecting this line of collectables)

Interesting that you bring this up - especially when Barbie has just turned 50 last week. In fact I have a very large collection of stewardess dolls that I want to share with the readership. Barbie was not the first to wear stewardess uniforms and in fact was modeled on a German doll that was available from tobacconists. I will need to count up the number of airlines that have had dolls manufactured - there are a lot and I suspect I am only scratching the tip of the iceberg. Previous "doll posts" on this thread have not always been received well but they are an important chapter of the air hostess story. Dolls have provided the iconic role model for girls the world over who have dreamt to fly, preserving the glamour of the role. Who knows how much they figure in inspiring future generations of air hostesses?

Air France used to hand out dolls in national dress with the inflight meals back in the 50's. Here is a pic.

Re: Air Hostesses

Carven Suit #1

Another icon of haute couture, Carven, was engaged to produce the next generation of stewardess uniforms for Air France in . Named for "Madame Carven Mallet", who was in fact Carmen de Tommasso, this house of fashion was established in Paris in 1945 and had produced uniforms for other airlines before Air France. A uniform division was eventually created in 1985 and has subsequently produced uniforms for the air hostesses of other airlines such as SAS, Air India, and Aerolineas Argentinas. The diminutive Madame Carven turned 100 last month!

Carven has traditionally focused on feminine touches, especially for the petit frame and often featured white linen collars. The uniform produced in 1978 was the summer uniform - the winter uniform being made by Nina Rici. It was part of a push by Air France to introduce a multi-form wardrobe that allowed aircrew to express some individuality with the uniform. The Carven suit came in a houndstooth pattern in either red or blue.

I think that this uniform must not have been so photogenic as I have struggled to find any photos of it in use. Likewise, in 1976, Maison Rodier supplied uniforms to Air France. The house of Rodier was in fact a supplier of fine fabrics, established in 1852 rather than a design house. Many of Paris' finest fashion designers have employed fabrics from Rodier. The only example I can find of a Rodier uniform is this one worn by ground staff.

Re: Air Hostesses

Air France Concorde Uniform

In 1976, Air France engaged the House of Jean Patou to produce special uniforms for the air hostesses who crewed Concorde. It premiered on January 21st, 1976. Designed by Angelo Tarlazzi, it was styled in a lightweight, flowing beige with a fine blue pinstripe. It was intended to be the "symbol of a very female elegance" and an ambassador for french dressmaking at each stop for Concorde.

It was replaced in 1986 with a new uniform styled by the house of Nina Ricci.

Time to have break from Air France for a while before it gets stale - I will finish the series later.

Don't even ask me where this comes from!
