Re: Air Hostesses

Do you remember this?

Back in 2004, it wasn't Swine Flu, but Bird Flu (or H5N1 strain of Influenza A) that caused major problems for airlines and airports, particularly in Southeast Asia.

There were a lot of empty planes flying into China back then...

Hard to tell exactly... our big friend in the east still keeps a lot of that information under wraps or manipulates numbers.

Can't tell you Jay - but it was not good for the airlines. Over a 6 month period, SARS led to severe financial losses for airlines and airports based in the affected areas, as airline load factors dropped instantly by 30-80% in the worst cases.

The number of scheduled flights worldwide fell by 3% - equivalent to 2.5m seats - in mid-June 2003 compared to the year before. SARS created more disruption to airline travel than the Iraq war.

Worst hit were China and the Asia Pacific region, with flights to China down by 45%. Hong Kong's Airport Authority said passenger traffic in May 2003 at Chek Lap Kok had slumped by almost 80% from the year before. Cathay Pacific said the Sars virus had cut its May passenger numbers by almost 75%, with the number of flights down by 45%. As of 21 May 2003, 12 international airlines had suspended services to Hong Kong and 37 worldwide destinations departing from Hong Kong had gone off-line. In April 2003, the number of flight cancelled each day was around 164, representing more than 30 per cent of all flights previously arriving at the Hong Kong International Airport. The loss in landing fees was estimated at a minimum of $3.5 million per day.

Passenger numbers to China fell 81.2% in the first 10 months of the year compared with the same time the previous year according to the China Daily. Most regional airlines were dragged into the red an three airlines, Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines reconsidered taking delivery of 39 new planes.

As of 13 May 2003, Cathay Pacific Airway was carrying approximately 7,000 passengers a day, a drastic drop of about 75 per cent compared with same period in 2002. In the worst case, some flights only had single digit number of passengers on board. The airline cut scheduled passenger flights by about 45 per cent and 16 aircraft were temporarily parked to help adjust to the downturn.

Dragonair, Hong Kong's airline with an extensive regional and mainland network, was hit even worse than Cathay Pacific. In April 2003, it carried only 71,283 passengers, compared with 296,797 passengers in April 2002, a drastic drop of 76 per cent.

Hey Dazza - you've reminded me of something I've been meaning to post for a while (what with the mention of Otto Pilot and all)

Hosties at the Movies #1

Who could ever forget Julie Hagerty as stewardess Elaine, in the 1980 comedy classic Airplane! (Flying High)?

Some classic moments as she helps her ex-boyfriend Striker to land the plane after all the flight crew are laid low.

A memorable moment was when the autopilot failed and had to be "manually" inflated!

At the end of the movie, Otto got his own inflatable stewardess paramour!

Yup back in 2003...it wasnt really bird flu which affected..it was SARS. A really bad time, especially for HK and China.. Im so glad CX and KA managed to get through it.

Quite right and my bad for perpetuating the myth that Avian flu was the agent responsible for SARS - it was, in fact, a previously-unrecognised coronavirus; SARS-related coronavirus or SARS-CoV. Previous fatalities in Southeast Asia from H5N1 and similarities in presentation with a flu-like illness led to the early supposition that the agent was avian influenza. And it was in 2003, not 2004 as stated in my earlier post.

Rules For Guys
At last a guy has taken the time to write this all down. Finally, the guys' side of the story. (I must admit, it's pretty good.) We always hear "the rules" from the female side. Now here are the rules from the male side.

These are our rules!

Please note ... these are all numbered "1" ON PURPOSE!

1. Learn to work the toilet seat. You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports. It's like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be.

1. Shopping is NOT a sport. And no, we are never going to think of it that way.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one: Subtle hints do not work! Strong hints do not work! Obvious hints do not work! Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That's what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. A headache that lasts for 17 months is a problem. See a doctor.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 days.

1. If you won't dress like the Victoria's Secret girls, don't expect us to act like soap opera guys.

1. If you think you're fat, you probably are. Don't ask us.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one.

1. You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, please say whatever you have to say during commercials.

1. Christopher Columbus did not need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it will be scratched. We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing," we will act like nothing's wrong. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, expect an answer you don't want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine...Really.

1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as football, other women or cars.

1. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape. Round is a shape.

1. Thank you for reading this. Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight; but did you know men really don't mind that? It's like camping.
Thats awesome!

Re: Air Hostesses

American Airlines stewardesses adorn this early Douglas DC-4. The DC-4 was introduced into passenger service in 1946 but civilian production was limited. Surplus C-54's were much cheaper and the introduction of the pressurized and superior ranged DC-6 into service the following year by American Airlines and United made them obsolete on main routes. This photo was taken June 8, 1946 and the DC-4 would be AA's "Flagship" for only a short while until the DC-6's made their operational debut in April 1947.

I am not sure exactly where this photo was taken but it sure looks interesting. It appears to be in the middle of a city block in New York with traffic going past. I wonder how they got it there?

Oh yeah!! It will be interesting to see whether the new management at Herpa will bring their DC-4 mould out of mothballs. It seems like they are making a resurgence at the moment.

Another classic!

Re: Air Hostesses

Mother and Daughter!

In an unusual twist, mother and daughter Beth and Summer Braaten graduated together as airline hostesses for Alaska Airlines in May, 2007.

The story was reported in the Seattle Times:

"This is the first time Alaska Airlines has trained a mother-daughter team together" said Matthew Coder, manager of Inflight Services Training for Alaska Airlines. "We've had sisters together, and husbands and wives, but not a mother-daughter. What usually happens is the daughter goes through the training first and they like their jobs so much, we get the mother later."

But not this time. Here's how the story is being told:

Encouraged by a supportive spouse and friends who are flight attendants, Beth Braaten applied first.

"I wanted to be a flight attendant since I was a little girl. It never went away," said the 46-year-old interior designer. "A year ago I decided to pursue the dream."

About the same time, Summer Braaten, who graduated from Central Washington University in 2006 with a degree in tourism and hotel management, was working in catering. On a job, she met an Alaska Airlines recruiter.

"It was mom's dream, but it sounded like fun," said Summer, 23.

She applied in March, two weeks after Beth. Both were accepted and scheduled for the same training class.
Following graduation, both women will be based in Anchorage.
"I never imagined when I held Summer in my arms my first Mother's Day [in 1984] that we'd ever be doing something like this together." Beth said. "Our graduation is a perfect Mother's Day gift."
