Re: Air Hostesses
Air hostesses are often seen in the media (more of that later), but here is a recent offering:

Re: Air Hostesses
The flight attendants were prepping the cabin for arrival getting the last of the cups and garbage. This gentleman asked one of the flight attendants, a beautiful, blonde woman, "What is the ETA?" She answered "That is our estimated time of arrival", she took his empty cup and went on her merry way.

I could have posted this pic of a 70's Branniff 727 in any of Wahoos Retrograde, Oh No or here. What a priceless pic - I can remember when my family's loungeroom had a similar color scheme!
![]() Nice hosties tho - from the Air Strip days.

I don't like that commercial - she would be fired so fast you wouldn't believe it - whatever happened to girls who behaved properly?

Re: Air Hostesses
Exactly - isn't she a whole lot more pleasant to look at than that loud one raving away in the commercial?

Re: Air Hostesses
The Air Strip!
Braniff really made their mark with stylish fashion for the airline industry. In the 1960s, Dallas-based Braniff International set out to make commercial air travel more glamorous, with ads that boasted "The End of the Plain Plane." To give this attitude some texture, Braniff hired Emilio Pucci, a former WWII bomber pilot and one of the hottest designers of the time, to create the uniforms for its flight attendants. Pucci's innovative designs were a blend of fashion at altitude and fashion with attitude, serving up bright, bold colors with both style and sex appeal - at a time when sex appeal was still stylish. In the 1970s, Braniff hired Halston to provide a new, refreshing look for its flight attendants, continuing its leadership in high-flying fashion. Braniff's fashionable flight attendant uniforms set the trends not only for the center aisle, but also for the streets of New York and Los Angeles. They inspired many of today's top designers, and Braniff's branded sex appeal rewrote the rules on luxury and lifestyle marketing, proving that bold innovation can lead to commercial success. After all, these ground-breaking uniforms played a pivotal role in propelling Braniff to new heights in the aviation industry. The hostess uniforms, named “High Fashion Quick Change” or “QC Costumes”, came in four versions and the complete uniform consisted of several components; Hostesses greeted passengers in an absinthe or apricot colored reversible wool coat accessorized with a Pucci print pillbox hat and velvet scarf. Underneath the hostesses wore a vibrant pink gabardine suit worn over a blue silk long-sleeved turtleneck tunic and matching culottes. During meal service, the uniform was augmented by a colorful apron dress called a "Puccino." Hostesses removed the outer layers of the uniform during the flight ultimately ending up in the tunic-culottes combination. A plastic bubble headdress was occasionally worn during inclement weather. Braniff touted this series of clothing changes as the “Air Strip”. ![]() I will be away for a few days but when I return I plan a mini-series on the fashion of Braniff Airways - Hostess Couture! Re: Air Hostesses
Just back from Noosa, which was a great break after the horrible week I had last week and now absolutely snowed under in work (yes Emil - lots of cutting and sewing). Will find time a little later in the week to get back on track, but today, just a little filler.

Re: Air Hostesses
The Braniff Air Strip - Part 2
![]() A very distinctive part of Emilio Pucci's innovative wardrobe for Braniff stewardesses was the famous "Space Bubble". Officially known as the "Rain Dome", the idea was to protect the 1960's/70's hair-do's from the wind and the rain. Remember there were no skywalks onto the aeroplanes back then - you would walk accross the tarmac no matter what the weather where the poor Hostie would be waiting to greet you at the foot of the stairs. Here is Emilio with a bevvy of beautiful Braniff stewardesses. ![]() And here are some pics of the Rain Dome. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() First hand accounts indicate that the bubble made it very difficult to hear anything - perhaps it was also the inspiration for the Cone of Silence! ![]()

Change of Pace - Introducing Natacha!
I will be away the rest of the week so wanted to leave you with something to anticipate. This is one of the hottest cartoon charcaters to come out of Belgium (along with Tintin) - she is the adventure-seeking Hostie, Natacha. She is the quintessential sex-goddess stewardess and the subject of a whole series of books. I have a truckload of images so you will be seeing plenty more of her from time to time in this thread. Hope you like her as much as I do!

Re: Air Hostesses
Today's post is dedicated to the wonderful cabin crew of Thai International whose hospitality I had the good fortune to enjoy last week. Like the Thai people in general they were delightfully courteous, friendly and helpful.
We were welcomed aboard by the stewards in their red jackets and ties, and the hostesses wearing colorful silk 2 piece creations based on traditional dress, with gilt sashes over their shoulders. ![]() ![]() The drink trolley run. There was a lot of variation in the colors which all looked bright and cheerful. ![]() ![]() After the first meal was served, the girls changed into their more practical uniforms with blouses and skirts, or in some cases, slacks. The girl on the right is wearing the purple pinafore worn when preparing meals in the galley. ![]() Once the more menial chores are done, the smock goes away and is replaced by the purple blazer with the neck scarf. The name badges are emblazoned with the title "Air Hostess" or "Air Steward" - no "flight attendant"s here! ![]() ![]() What a great crew!! Top marks for hospitality, care and style!
