A340-500 & 777-200LR Range question

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but seeing as both of these planes have been out for a while I thought that the general squawk talk would be better than 1:1 aviation.

I was reading about various airliners and I noticed that for some reason when it comes to the 777-200LR and A340-500, everyone says that the 777-200LR is the longer range of the two even though it has a range of 8,555 nm vs the A340-500's 9,000 nm range. Is there a reason for this that I'm not aware of? Did people forget that the A340-500 exists? Or is it just diehard Boeing fans being stubborn? I know it's an outdated topic but I found it to be really strange.
