A couple of new Utopia

Fantasy tails on a fantasy aeroplane - or "What might have been!"

As a special request these B787s have Utopia tails - be interested in your comments - other than the fact that they are fantasy - We are actually quite pleased with how they turned out - this is an elegant aeroplane

G-STUA "Primavara" for Romania
G-STUC "Paithani" for India

They look great on B787's too!!!!

One of Maggie Thatcher's less-endearing legacies was the hatchet job she did on the Utopia tails...

Interesting note on the Utopia tails that apart from the tails we saw, BA had commissioned and aquired three other tails for the fleet.
These were to be: -
West Coast USA
The Cayman Islands
The Seychelles
The "World Tail" project was terminated before these had a chance to be implemented.
I have searched endlessly to try to find designs for these but without any luck so far, maybe i can dig something out when i visit the BA museum next month.

Please Do Gary.

Jamicia, NZ, Singapore/Malay, Wales were all countries I was expecting to see tails of.

You don't like Whalerider???

Dame Thatcher did not like the World tails and very publicly announced it, saying "We fly the British flag, not these awful things."

Virgin Atlantic responded by placing the British flag on the front of all their planes as well as the byline "Britain's national flag carrier". The new CEO of BA caved in in 2001 and announced the fleet would be repainted in the current Chatham Dockyard version of the Union flag so as not to dilute the British identity that was recognised and valued by its traditional customers.

A few names the Welsh tail could have had really.... "Sheeprider", "Sheep and Trees", "Crossing Sheep" or even "Sheep Dreaming"!!!

If Maggie and the CEO were so worried about the BA Tails why didn't they return to the Landor livery instead of the insipid Chatham!!

Uncanny Gary - the first custom liveries (to the best of my knowledge) were the TAA liveries of the early 1970's - Coral Islander on the DC-9 and Central Australian on the B727. What is not widely known is that there were originally FOUR custom liveries designed but the other 2 were never painted on aircraft. One of the two was of the Great Barrier Reef and the artwork has been preserved but the other has disappeared into obscurity. Now they would make great custom models! Sadly, most of the industry people from that era are no longer with us so it may be a mystery that is never solved.

PS - in an act of censorship, the couple walking down the beach on Coral Islander had to be repainted wearing Speedos! True story!
