Hi nAndy and friends,
According to initial reports I have, the A310 took off with a landing gear problem, and has all its gears in 'down' position !! Because of this, it created a lot of drag, not only slowing down the plane but also burn off a lot of fuel !! The pilots estimated that they could reach VIE, but ran out of fuel when they were almost there. They made a total engine-off dead stick emergency landing. Beacause of the distance- to-glide was too great, the vertical speed became way too high, and it hit the runway very hard, breaking off one engine and one wing !! The aircraft is a total write-off.
I am surprised that the aircraft did'nt circle and burn-off fuel to a safe landing weight then return to the for landing and fix the gear problem !! but instead flew all the way to VIE !! Some decision !!
Thanks
