WOW! This topic was posted today and there's already pages of replies. I wonder what the record is. I have about 150 - 200 Herpas. Then there's 50 non-herpas. I kind of lost my interest in Herpa now.

Actually, the 747s are stacked in one corner of the closet, the MD-11s are in a dresser drawer along with the A330s and A340s. The rest are all in alphabetical order on some shelves stacked sideways, 7 shelves high. None are actually on display outisde the box; I don't have the space. I only display the 1:250 and larger planes.

I made a database on Microsoft Excel. It includes Manufacturer, Airlines, Aircraft, Remarks, Where I got it and Regestration of Aircraft.

I started out trying to use an Access database, but there was some difficulties with locking certain fields and having to go back and adjust others and getting help to input everything... basically it proved more time consuming than it was worth, so I just dumped it back into Excel. It's been working real well so far, though now that I'm finally done with my MBA, I can 'probably' find the time to work on the Access version again.
I tried keeping track of all 1:500, but C&C and BB keep dumping stuff out and it was a pain to keep track of them, so I stepped it back to SJ and Herpa only and a token list (only 150 entries worth) of non-SJ and Herpa that hasn't been updated since the first release of BB. That and I stopped collecting them altogether anyway... either too high priced or too low of quality. |

You know what, I think you should just make your database simple and add aircraft as soon as you get them to avoid some hassle. You should put them in a pile and type them in one by one.
![]() Dont know if this helps but I tried!

LOL... actually, that's what I do when I get them in, it's keeping the database of stuff I don't have that's difficult. Once they're in my hands, I can check landing gear, engine, and window types as well as misprints, new and old versions. The problem is keeping up with planes that were re-released with changes like lighter/darker colors, cheatline changes, silver on leading edges, etc.
The ones in hand are relatively easy to enter data for, it's the ones I don't know about that are a headache since I can't compare what I don't know to what I have. Take for example the Herpa Thai B747-400... there's what, seven to nine versions of it? I've only actually seen four and only have two, so the rest are a bit of a mystery without actually seeing them and comparing them to what I already have. And, what are the chances the person I'm getting it from actually knows which of the nine versions it is before I buy it from them? |
