An A310-304 registered D-AHLB of Hapag Lloyd (herpa model 501026 shows the sister ship D-AHLA) crash landed with BOTH engines cut off at Vienna yesterday. The aircraft was built 1989 and delivered to Hapag Lloyd 01/90, leased from Defag. It has two GE CF6-80C2A2 engines. It can carry up to 264 passengers in a standard charter economy seating. With 150 passengers, it was luckyly only booked about 60%.
The airline does operate three A310-304, registered D-AHLA, D-AHLB and D-APOM. The aircraft D-AHLC is an A310-308. Hi All,
I saw that on the news last night. How on earth could both engines failed at the same time? ![]() And the plane glided from Hungary to Vienna... Long glide... |

Hi nAndy and friends,
According to initial reports I have, the A310 took off with a landing gear problem, and has all its gears in 'down' position !! Because of this, it created a lot of drag, not only slowing down the plane but also burn off a lot of fuel !! The pilots estimated that they could reach VIE, but ran out of fuel when they were almost there. They made a total engine-off dead stick emergency landing. Beacause of the distance- to-glide was too great, the vertical speed became way too high, and it hit the runway very hard, breaking off one engine and one wing !! The aircraft is a total write-off. I am surprised that the aircraft did'nt circle and burn-off fuel to a safe landing weight then return to the for landing and fix the gear problem !! but instead flew all the way to VIE !! Some decision !! Thanks |

The whole situation is a little bit curious.
The plane flew from Crete (Greece) to Hannover (Germany). The pilots said that the fuel gauges showed enough fuel to reach Munich airport without any problem. A few minutes before reaching Austria the engines gone off and the gauges suddenly reached Zero in a few seconds. They sailed with the plane to VIE and had much luck because they nearly hit the fuel tanks of the Airport (they flew only 3 meters over the fuel tanks!!) During the crash emergency landing one gear and one wing totally broke off. There were 29 passengers slightly injured. As details of this curious crash landing are still unknown, we will know more after having the results of the Black box and the Voice recorder. |

Update: Black box and Voice recorder were sent today to Braunschweig (Germany) for knowing the cause of this emergency landing.
The plane will be towed (?) to the hangars this afternoon, Hapag Lloyd said, that they want to repair it although it is heavily damaged. These are the news of Vienna airport for today. |

I just so happen to see the pictures of the heavily damaged- Hapag Lloyd A310. It looks like a mess! Is it true that the plane lost both engines and glided in? I wonder if anyone there caught the landing on video?
Anyway, I'm sure all souls on board are counting their blessings at the moment... |

Yesterday they brought the plane to the hangar to check the whole damage. The plane will be repaired, this will cost about USD 40 millions. Although these costs are nearly the same as for a new plane, Hapag Lloyd decided this way. By the way - this plane will never fly again for Hapag Lloyd as it will be sold after repair in about 8 months.
